To be honest considering this has a 4 star rating I'm a bit disappointed. Generally speaking it is a nice place but there are small things that are lacking compared to other similar Onsen Hotels at the same price. For example they don't provide a basket to go to the onsen but only a cheap plastic bag.
The Hotel itself is very old but well maintained and at least the general spaces use nice materials and decoration. Once you reach the room it becomes worse. The materials used in the room are very cheap (Vinyl Floor, Cheap Wallpaper that was put on very poorly). Some aspects of the room have been refurnished, like the sink but most of it seems to be original from the 60s-80s. The bathtub and Toilet are retro models.
The Onsen baths are a mixed bag - the one on the third floor with Wood ceiling seems to be the newest and is the best of the three. The other two (panorama and first floor) are in dire need of refurbishing. They seem in very bad condition and extremly old.
The worst part (for me) was the Breakfast. 90% of the selection was japanese Style (and even that seemed poor). Western Options were only Pancakes, French Toast (which was good at least) and a few sad pieces of low quality bread with condiments. They didn't even have a coffee machine!!! Only pre-brewed coffee that tasted like water.
Very clean, nicely decorated. About 8 minutes walk to Takayama Train Station and Bus Station.
Very friendly hosts, help us to call taxi gave me an ice pad to relieve my knee pain after Shirakawa-go tour.
Great location! Hotel is 200m away from Station, surrounded by many good restaurants and tourist attractions within 10 minutes walk.
Breakfast buffet offers wide variety of options including western & Japanese food.
Rooms are small ( Japanese hotel standards) but clean and comfortable. Hotel provides wide selection of amenities! Don’t need to bring any toiletries! Free coffee at lobby.
Front office staff are friendly and helpful! Outstanding staff like Mr Taga-San and Ms Marueka-San are exceptional professional and helpful!
This might be the first time I've stayed at a hotel that blends Japanese and Western styles so perfectly. The room wasn't small, and the size of the beds, the space between them, and the bedding all offered a high degree of comfort and convenience.
I specifically came to see the Takayama Festival this time, and coincidentally, there were several floats parked right outside the hotel entrance for everyone to admire.
It was lively outside, but peaceful and quiet inside.
A lovely location to enjoy an onsen and cute little town. 2-3 nights is the perfect amount of time for this hotel. The town is very small and you can walk through the temple just Infront of the hotel to reach it. Although the hill is very steep, the stairs make it manageable but it's alot of stairs. On arrival the shuttle bus is waiting for you and they take your luggage to the room. A staff member guides you to your room and explains when the shuttle leaves, where to go to explore the hotel, breakfast and public bath times. The public bath is open between 3pm and 1am, closes for cleaning than opens again from 5am to 10am and closes for cleaning again. During each cleaning they switch the male and female public bathing zones so everyone has a chance to experience each bath. I chose a room with a private bath and a mountain view. The private bath is small but big enough for 2 people if you're both sitting, it also has a window that opens up. The view is stunning. Breakfast starts around 7am and last service is at 8:30am. If you stay 2 nights they will give 2 different breakfasts. Green tea, coffee, juice and milk are the only drinks at breakfast. Soft drink is available at reception during the afternoon. The Hilda beef steak meal provided by the hotel racks up the price with it being $70 AUD per person and for comparison, in town, a similar meal was around $40 AUD per person. If you really want a dinner at the hotel than try out the paid dinner but there's a few good spots to eat in town. There's this one restaurant called Senda that is a good price and just left of the big hotel direction sign at the bottom of the mountain. If you are unsure of where to go than pick up the local food map at the town info office. Anyway, good hotel for a city getaway as well as an opportunity to take the Shinkansen and local train from Tokyo (4 hours from Tokyo but great views and easy transfer)
I love this hotel!
1) The view from the hotel is so beautiful. Even inside the Onsen.
2) The customer service is very nice. A very relaxing place.
3) Breakfast is delicious and there is a very nice garden where you can take photos.
Highly recommended.
Sudden rain. I was told that I couldn't take it to my room because I only had one umbrella for rent. Can you borrow an umbrella because I want to get ready and go out in about 30 minutes? When I heard that, I couldn't bring an umbrella to the room anyway, and by the time the result came out, the umbrella was gone.
I didn't steal an umbrella, but I just wanted to borrow it for a short time, but I felt very uncomfortable ... A good hotel without it. The person at the front desk other than that person was a good person.
The hot water in the shower has no temperature adjustment function.
The free morning was different from the photo, but it was good to have it.
Green salad was a business potato salad, sorry (ω`)

🚿 There's a bathtub in the room for a soak. However, for just showering, the public bath is highly recommended as it's more spacious, especially when showering with children.

Free parking — the car park is right in front of the hotel’s main entrance, very convenient for drivers.
The room was clean. The three‑bed room was enough for our family (2 adults, a 12‑year‑old, a 9‑year‑old, and a 5‑year‑old). Breakfast was good. The onsen was also nice and clean. They even provide complimentary popsicles after the onsen — my kids loved them.
The staff were very polite and helpful.
Overall, good value for money.
Great hospitality - Staff are friendly and helpful. Very warm experience
Onsen & room - Clean and decent with Japanese design (Apply to the one inside the room & public onsen)
Lobby - Filled with the western classic design
For sure, we will return for 3rd times visit to Sasara.

Amazing
We love this hotel.. I really like Takayama unfortunately I stayed only 1 N as a stopover. We will visit again. The only issues is i do prefer high floor.. and was given 2nd but since we only stay for 1nite .. I did not change. Will visit again. Did not have time to check out other part of the facilities. We ordered dinner and breakfast with accommodation.. the dinner was excellent . Breakfast spread is great.. lots of choices. Service is excellent in the restaurant.
The room is exactly same as the photo on Trip.com, it is clean and spacious. Although it is close to railway station, but no noise in the midnight, my husband and I had a very good sleep at night. The bed and shower are so comfy, definitely will stay this hotel again if I visit Takayama again.
My room is spacious, great amenities (foot bath, public indoor and outdoor bath, private family bath and private bath). Staffs are friendly, helpful and very polite. Food was excellent . Shuttle is available to and from station. We enjoyed the place very much, and had fun exploring the premise. No complaints at all and will definitely come back to this historical Ryokan.
Stayed at Suimekan Gero Onsen and had a wonderful experience. The staff, especially Adajisan, was incredibly kind, helpful, and gave great recommendations. The hotel offers 3 different onsen baths, very relaxing and well maintained. There is also a game area, making the stay fun and enjoyable. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Gero Onsen!
The hotel is new, location is good as well, only 5 mins walking distance to the JR Takayama station. It is very close to the bus station to shirakawa-go as well. There is a hotspring, luggage keeping service, and lounage etc for resident. We had a drink in hotel restaurant at night, and it is great. There are lots of restaurant and souvenir shops around, it is very convenience for the tourist. I enjoyed my trip in Takayama
My recent stay at the Wat Hotel & Spa Hida Takayama was a delightful experience. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the hotel's thoughtful amenities and welcoming atmosphere. Ample parking is available (a reasonable ¥800 overnight fee applies), making it a convenient choice for those traveling by car. I also opted for the breakfast buffet (¥1000 per person), which offered a delicious start to each day. The friendly front desk staff spoke excellent English, making check-in a breeze. A particularly nice touch was the welcome drink coupon, redeemable for a refreshing beer or soft drink at the self-service bar – a perfect way to unwind after a journey. The rooms at Wat Hotel & Spa are spacious and comfortable, featuring well-appointed bathrooms with excellent shower facilities. The hotel's onsen, located on the top floor, is a true highlight. The private onsen is available on a first-come, first-served basis, offering a relaxing and intimate experience. Simply lock the door, and the space is yours to enjoy. The hotel is also family-friendly, with a fun touch – guests can help themselves to a complimentary popsicle after their bath. All the essential amenities are provided, including combs, soap, shampoo, and comfortable bathrobes, readily available in the lobby. My stay at the Wat Hotel & Spa Hida Takayama was truly rejuvenating, and I highly recommend it for anyone visiting this charming town.
This was such a lovely place to stay. The room was nice and spacious, allowing us to feel at home. Not only were we taken care of by means of beautiful breakfast and dinner, but the staff were extremely helpful when we talked to them about hiking in Kamokochi. I would highly recommend booking this place especially with a meal plan, since it was nice to have food sorted after Hiking all day.

Very good location, near to Takayama bus & train station. Hotel room is spacious and comes with a balcony. Very nice view. Might stay again if I go to Takayama.
I love this hotel! 1) The view from the hotel is so beautiful. Even inside the Onsen. 2) The customer service is very nice. A very relaxing place. 3) Breakfast is delicious and there is a very nice garden where you can take photos. Highly recommended.
