This is my third stay at this hotel, having visited previously when it was Evergreen Laurel and now as Gurney Bay Hotel. I have always appreciated the atmosphere—it has a classic, old-school charm that still manages to attract a younger crowd. Another highlight is the breakfast, which is consistently excellent and never disappoints.
However, as a 5-star hotel, I believe the property should maintain a level of service and maintenance that matches its rating. Unfortunately, this stay had some significant issues. On our first night, we suffered from heavy bed bug bites. While the hotel moved us to a new room, we suspected the bed bug issue persisted there as well, though to a lesser degree. Furthermore, the second room had a water leak under the bathroom basin and the water wouldn't drain properly.
I believe the hotel is still well-managed overall, but there needs to be more attention to detail. Maintenance should be proactive—inspecting rooms thoroughly and frequently—rather than waiting for a customer to complain before taking action. I truly like this hotel, so I hope management takes this feedback seriously to ensure the 5-star standard is upheld.
Staffs were friendly and helpful. Able to get corner room with good Komtar tower and sea view. Check-in/out process was done fast and smoothly, no deposit collected. Room very spacious, comfortable king bed and 4 big pillow provided. Location is in main road to many attractions and local restaurants and free city bus stop no. 7 just in front of the hotel. Breakfast was splendid with very good variety of local, Chinese and Japanese meals. Really recommended!
The hotel is great, staff are impeccable in their attentiveness to the guest. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast buffet was absolutely outstanding, with an abundance of choices catered to satisfy every taste. The pool and gym are also fantastic, with the added convenience of being open 24/7, to put in an early morning workout. Spacious and very well equipped and maintained.
However, our stay was not without faults and there are definitely some things management needs to address:
- the noise from the elevator automatic announcements is absurd! the ”doors opening/closing” alerts are constant and audible from neighboring floors as well as your own.If you stay in a room numbered xx15 or xx16, be advised you will not have a pleasant time - we asked to change rooms immediately as soon as we realized this.
- elevators can be SLOW, magma slow. it can take a long time to move around if you are staying in a higher floor. We stayed for 2 nights and during that period 2 separate elevators were down for maintenance. It took us a total of 15 minutes to move from one floor to the other, after getting our room changed (for reasons stated above) and new keycards.
- the level from street noise audible in the room is just inadmissible at a supposed 5-star hotel level, at least in the rooms facing the main road. These rooms have, inexplicably, a single pane of glass and very tall windows, which makes soundproofing pretty much nonexistent - mat rempit bikes racing in the dead of night, the call to prayer blasting from the loudspeakers of the mosque nearby before 6am, drilling from the construction site nearby, and other nuisances that definitely disturbed my sleep.
The hotel's design is quite industrial. The front desk staff can mostly communicate in English.
The room is a bit small and feels like it's cobbled together from different sections. However, it's fairly well-equipped.
Breakfast: Limited selection. They have vegetarian sandwiches, noodles, coffee, and eggs.
There's the Blue Mansion nearby, which you can visit for a fee. In the evening, there's a food court next door with a variety of food and drinks, definitely worth checking out.
I absolutely love this hotel! It far exceeded my expectations. Initially, I just wanted a value-for-money option for my Penang trip, but staying here turned out to be amazing. The location is very convenient for exploring George Town’s attractions. The breakfast is fantastic! On my last day, I had to catch an early flight and paid for breakfast—never expected the variety and quality of food to be so worth the price. The staff are friendly, and the housekeeping team is polite and welcoming. The night view through the floor-to-ceiling windows was my favorite moment each night. I’ll definitely choose St Giles again when I return to Penang!
Hotel room js clean and friendly reception as well as security guard. I was very tired coming down from Hatyai (flood zone). The staff allow me to check in earlier. Appreciate that.
Bed is comfortable and ac is cold. The only negative part is the Ac is quite noisy when it’s at night. Drumming sound from the aircon vent.
Many eateries nearby also 2 shopping (Gama and 1st Avenue) are nearby
Overall is a comfortable hotel to stay.
This was our first hotel in Malaysia, located half an hour's drive from the airport. The lobby is beautiful with live singers, creating a strong resort atmosphere. There's a large shopping mall nearby and it's not far from the night market. There are also many reputable currency exchange shops in the area. We booked a triple room, which was essentially a double room with a sofa bed added. Although a bit small, it was enough for our family of three.
Everything is good except the service provided by the hotel front desk Chinese woman. She totally not suitable to work in hotel line as she is not customer oriented at all.
1. She pretended didn’t hear me talking to her asking if I can place my luggage at the hotel or if I can make early check in. She with the EXTREMELY RUDE MANNER, ask me to refer to the security guard and insisted do not have room available for early check in (even though that time is about 3pm) She don’t even want to look at the hotel guest’s face while talking to them.
2. On the next morning, when I approached her again to complaint on the noise from the lift opposite my room; she again repeated her IGNORANCE ATTITUDE. What I can see is she attempted to use her ignorance attitude to push all the guest request or enquiries to her colleague.
The mentioned front desk Chinese woman whom represents the hotel image; totally should be removed for continuing spoiling the hotel brand with her RUDE attitude.
Overall this hotel deserves for 5 stars rating however 2 stars remove due to this front desk Chinese woman’s unprofessionalism . (Her name tag is with 3 words Chinese name) and I think is the only Chinese staff of this hotel.
This hotel location is very strategic, room size acceptable for the price paid, hotel staff (Front desk a Malay guy, an Indian girl, a Malay lady and the Security guard) are helpful and friendly.
We have not been to Penang since 2021 and this is our 1st time at this hotel. Glad to say that , Berjaya Hotel Penang exceeds our expectation.
We stayed at 24th floor - the room was quite spacious & the best thing was the view. Love it. The room also clean & shower was good & toilet is clean as well.
Breakfast also was good. Not too many choice but adequate.
1. The hotel is located approximately 10 minutes from Penang Central.
2. Facilities such as the swimming pool are well maintained and remain as good as they were 10 years ago.
3. The breakfast provided is varied and appealing.
4. There are limited halal dining options around the hotel.
5. The towels had a musty smell despite appearing clean, as if they had not been properly washed.
Very Good

GGuest Userthis hotel is good overall, but when we arrived, they told us that we didn't have a booking with them and they couldn't locate our booking and details. the room was also said to be taken, and they are waiting for a cancellation in order to get our room. There is a lot of confusion among staff. some visitors were told to leave their rooms once they have entered. we waiting 1 hr 30 min to get our room. so check in was at 4.30pm. parking was also very inconvenient, as we had to park at the basement, which was impossible to even get one if you came into the hotel late and a T&G card was also needed to get validated before leaving the hotel if we wanted a free spot. Room was very spacious and clean. the tea and coffee was hard like its never been changed.
SSiferaThe hotel is more than 40 years old and the rumour is tjt a new management has taken over and a major renovation is about to happen in 2026. The only thing we really enjoyed was the view from the rooms overlooking the sea and the Penang bridge. We were here becuase we attended a wedding and wanted the convenience but the Banquet team did not provide us with the best service for the event area and we have sent a separate email to address that.
GGuest UserThe counter service name kelvin was so thoughtful by helping my mum to change room because her room side 1217 got indian temple chanting during midnight 4am to 9 am and make her cannot sleep thus kelvin the hotel stuff help her to change to lower room ( 1006) which is bigger , cleaner and no sound during midnight my mum and sister was satisfied and able to sleep well
Thank you once again to kelvin and hope he will be promoted to higher position ❤️👍🏻

__51FL920****Penang's oldest 5-star hotel, with 140 years of history. Both the interior and exterior of the hotel are absolutely beautiful, creating a very relaxing atmosphere. We stayed in a Deluxe Twin Room in the Heritage Wing. Although the price wasn't cheap, it was definitely worth every penny and highly recommended. For breakfast, if you prefer more variety, I'd suggest the buffet in the new building – the selection is so vast it's dazzling, you'll only wish your stomach was bigger!
GGuest User-Love the room - but I found used dirty bottle in the kitchen cardboard. Other than that the room is perfect, they light up free candle to smell nice daily and the room is spacious with good view and bathtub
-The grill seafood dinner buffet is a huge disappointment. The seafood is not fresh at all and they are super small, the oyster is like the size of my pinky nail. I rather you charge a more premium price and give me better quality seafood, I absolutely do not recommend the buffet

MMiaoMeowI found the hotel to be overall excellent and beautiful. The front desk and bellhop staff were quite enthusiastic, while others were just okay. The hotel facilities were also ample; for instance, since we arrived in the afternoon, the hotel allowed us to check in early. This meant I could easily take a nap on a sun lounger by the pool and even follow the sun to explore different parts of the hotel. The weather was great, and the ambiance was lovely. The hotel's location is fantastic, about a five-minute walk to the delicious Natsu. It was a shame that Bora Bora, right next to Natsu, was closed on Wednesday, so I missed out on the fire show, but the food was superb. The location is also a big plus for solo travelers wanting to go to the beach at night; I enjoyed a safe and peaceful time by myself. There were many breakfast options, but I felt the taste was pretty standard, nothing to write home about. My only minor complaint is that the shower head kept falling down and couldn't stay in place.
GGuest UserOverall we are satisfied with our stay, the room is big. Cons - basin located outside of the toilet and no handwash provided, it is inconvenient for us. Also, we never expect we will be charged for RM10 per day for parking. Pros - the hotel is quite Instagrammable and good to have simple kids play room. Funny fact - hotel will give free drinks everyday but you need to redeem the voucher at the reception EVERYDAY, it is really funny, why don’t just give a total vouchers and state the day there?
LLinnLeoWe had an enjoyable 8-day, 7-night stay at this property. The location is excellent—right in the heart of Penang and less than a 5-minute walk to Penang Road.
The room was clean and comfortable. Special thanks to the service attendant, Asad, who was very attentive and friendly. He kept our room in perfect condition throughout our stay. The only minor downside was that the pillows were a bit too soft for our preference. Nevertheless, we still slept well as the soundproofing was good—we didn’t hear any noise from the corridor or nearby rooms. We also enjoyed the great view from our room on the 16th floor.
We also used the gym throughout our stay. While it had sufficient equipment, the space was a bit small. Swimming pool at roof top has excellent view.
Overall, good value for money and highly recommended to friends visiting Penang.
