The room was a bit small, with just enough space for two single beds and not much else. However, the location was fantastic, right next to Russell Square, and less than a 10-minute walk to the British Museum. The hotel breakfast was just okay, but I appreciated having fruit and mixed salad greens available! The hotel building is quite old, and the elevator is very narrow, a common feature in older European buildings, quite different from the newer elevators we have back home. I booked for three nights and paid a total of over 4200 RMB including taxes, just for your reference.

The room, while not large, was very clean, and amenities were replaced every 2-3 days. The bathroom fan was quite noisy, so I had to turn off the overhead light in the toilet. It was fully equipped with a washing machine, cutlery, cooking pots, dish soap, a microwave, and a refrigerator – everything you'd need for a longer stay. The heating was excellent, making it very suitable for winter. The elevators were quite slow, including the two at the back of the building, so I'd recommend requesting a lower floor (but avoid the basement). It's also very close to South Kensington tube station.

I stay at Zedwell occasionally for one reason: the £34 price tag in central London is unbeatable. However, don't be fooled by the ”Hotel” in the name. This is a capsule hostel that suffers from an identity crisis, offering neither the service of a hotel nor the amenities of a decent hostel. Navigating the building is an experience in itself. With its endless identical doors and confusing layout, it feels like the Honeycomb Maze from Takeshi's Castle—I was afraid a guard would pop out and spray me with a fire extinguisher. To add to the atmosphere, parts of the building look like a construction site, though it's unclear if any work is actually happening. If you make it to your room, the basics are fine. The mattress is comfortable, and the sliding doors offer better privacy than the curtains at typical hostels. However, maintenance is spotty—my USB-C port was broken, and the tissue dispenser in the toilet is so poorly designed you have to forage inside it with your fingers just to get some tissue out. The real issue is that Zedwell charges ”hotel” prices for ”hostel” basics. Actually, that is unfair to hostels—competitors like Wombats or St Christopher's usually provide hair dryers, lockers, and luggage storage for free. Zedwell exploits the captive audience: £8 for a padlock (You cannot lock your pod without one). £5 to rent a single towel. £10 to rent a hairdryer. £15 for luggage storage. £20 for late checkout (standard checkout is a harsh 10 am). Extra fee if you want your sheets changed sooner than every 4 days. If you book this expecting a standard stay (needing a towel, safe storage for your things, and a 12 pm checkout), that £34 bargain effectively becomes £77, and even more if you need luggage storage or fresh bedding. Only stay here if you treat it like an indoor campsite—because behind the attractive photos of private capsules, that is essentially what it is. Bring your own towel, padlock, and toiletries, and get out by 10 am. Otherwise, you are paying a premium for a below-average experience.

The value for money here is truly excellent. A Kimpton hotel just 300 meters away would easily cost 3-4 times more. 1. The location is great, very close to Russell Square station, which makes getting to Heathrow via the Piccadilly Line super smooth. It's also incredibly close to the back entrance of the British Museum. 2. The breakfast selection isn't huge, and there aren't any vegetables, but it's enough to fill you up. 3. The bed is quite comfortable, and the room is very warm. This hotel actually has a lot of rooms – they even give you a map after check-in! A lot of tour groups stay here too, so it can get crowded, but it's genuinely cheap.
