Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani ★★★★

📍 63 Snell Parade, North Beach, Durban

"Absolutely terrible, this place is falling apart, it’s dingy and dirty, gives you the ick when you walk into the room, it’s dated and no renovations have been done since 2008 or they gave us a room that has never been renovated because it looks so old , broken and dingy. The windows are disgustingly dirty, the beds are tiny and there tv does not even work properly"

The Royal Hotel by Coastlands Hotels & Resorts ★★★

📍 267 Anton Lembede St, Durban Central, Durban

"The hotel is located in the heart of Durban. Pleasant location, friendly staff. Excellent restaurant, with pleasant, relaxing music playing in the evenings. The rooms are spacious, but the furniture is dated. There is a shower and bathtub. Hot water is available 24 hours a day. Daily cleaning. Good views from the windows."

📍 6 Lagoon Dr, Umhlanga

"I recently stayed at The Pearls in Umhlanga and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. The hotel was clean, comfortable, and had a very relaxing atmosphere. The staff were friendly, professional, and always willing to assist. I especially enjoyed the beautiful sea views and the convenient location close to shops and restaurants. Everything about my stay was pleasant, and I left feeling refreshed. I would definitely recommend The Pearls to anyone visiting Umhlanga."

"This accommodation is basic but neat and comfortable. We arrived late in the evening but there was someone waiting to receive us. The garden rooms are small but we were just looking for a decent shower, toilet and a comfortable place to sleep. There is DSTV. The parking was fine and safe. Some items like furniture may need some repair or replacement. I can overlook the minor repair issues based on the need just to have a clean and neat place to sleep over"

"Pleasant stay - Monday and Tuesday 19 and 20 Feb 2024. Was greeted by a porter who assisted with suitcase from where I had parked my car across the road. Check in staff were friendly and efficient. I decided to park my car in the underground parking offered by the hotel which does come at an extra cost. Both porter and reception staff were realistic around security and gave good advice. The hotel while positioned "centrally" along the Durban beachfront is more on the south side and just one block away from the main street from the city centre and this street corner does attract all sorts of individuals. If going for a walk - make sure all valuables like cell phones / wallets/ purse are not visible - tuck these under clothes. Also don't wear flash jewellery or fancy watches. Room was spacious and clean - comes with a small balcony. I was somewhat concerned in being allocated a room on the first floor where I would be disturbed by noise from the street. This did not happen - room is fairly sound proofed and there was no disturbance at night, so slept well - but noting that I stayed on a Monday and Tuesday - not sure if the same silence would be experienced over a weekend. The airconditioner was silent and worked well. Bathroom was somewhat scanty with toiletries given that this is marketed as an upmarket hotel - in fact the Blue Waters - north of the beachfront has an offer more toiletries and gives guests chocolates and large bottle of water on arrival. No chocolate and the smallest bottle of water is provided which you find in the bathroom. As I did not make use of the small water bottle offered it is not known if this small bottle gets replaced each day. I brought in my own water bottles as a I prefer 1.5 litres. Hot water from shower is almost instant so all good from that point of view. Wifi was a little unstable but that is because of load shedding that is being experienced by country. The food from the dining room / restaurant if you want to eat lunch or dinner at the hotel is good and delicious. The breakfast buffet is quite varied with lots of choices."

Suncoast Hotel & Towers

"First time in South Africa, first time in Durban on business, the hotel recommended by a South African friend, 30 kilometers from the airport, about 10 minutes drive from Durban Port. The location is quite convenient, there is a supporting entertainment city, dining, movies and casinos next to the hotel, and the internal passage connects to the first floor of the hotel. It takes 3 minutes to walk to the Sunshine Coast Beach. The sea view room I booked is a little compact, enough for one person, but it may be a little small for two people. Traditional British hotel service, clean and tidy environment, civilized and polite black waiters, especially for Chinese people, the hotel service here is impressive."

"Lovely overnight stay to celebrate a milestone birthday with complimentary cake! Great service and food, quiet and picturesque environment."

Cowrie Cove Guest House Hotels in Durban

Cowrie Cove Guest House

"This place has it all. Situated at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in leafy gardens, a strones throw away from the beach, open your window and you'll hear the waves breaking on the shoreline. The rooms are sumptious and there's plenty of space inside and outside the guest house to relax and even work. A large well maintained pool perfect for cool summer swims is right next to a bowma for unwinding in an evening. The house and gardens are very secure and the location is superb, sanwiched between Umhlanga village and La Lucia mall. "

Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani ★★★★
"Dear Hotel Manager and Maintenance Manager, My recent stay at the Elangeni Hotel was unacceptable. • Room Type: Elangeni Superior Room, 1 King Bed I checked into Room 1516 on Friday. The room was noticeably hotter than the passage and foyer. By Saturday morning it felt like a sauna. I called the front desk multiple times from the room with no answer and eventually had to use my own mobile to get through. Maintenance came up, claimed to have fixed the aircon, but nothing changed – and there was no follow-up. I was then moved to Room 1116, where the aircon was just as bad. At no point did anyone treat this with urgency or take ownership of ensuring I was comfortable. For a hotel of your supposed standard, this experience is far below what is acceptable. My comfort, rest, and time were all compromised."

"Difficult start as told despite payment and confirmation from ***********, that we didn't have a booking and they were full. Staff on reception were all staring at us and it felt very uncomfortable and not professional. Eventually we were allocated a room but the hotel only had 1 Working lift which for the size of the place was pretty poor, not least as were were told it had been like it for a few months!! The pool was closed too The room was great, spacious with all that was needed The buffet was very varied as was the breakfast. More geared for convention groups than travellers but suited us."

"It’s decent hotel we loved it. The only issue was parking because we wanted a safe parking space as we were looking through different hotels and it was listed. Only to find out when we got there that they were renovating their parking lot. It was not updated online."
