Marafiki Beach Hotel & Spa

Marafiki Beach Hotel & Spa ★★★

📍 Matemwe, Matemwe

"Incredible place. Excellent facilities, clean, excellent food, and great hospitality. The location is beautiful. The only drawback is that the sea isn't suitable for swimming. It's greatly affected by the tide. Even when the tide is high, the sea is present, but no one goes swimming due to the massive presence of sea urchins. If you come here, plan to take a taxi to a swimmable beach."

📍 Muyuni Beach, Matemwe

"Nice hotel for Mnemba Island tour, very close to the Island and the hotel staff was perfect. I had the best massage ever listening to the ocean and in front of the beach. The food is fantastic and they do not serve alcoholic beverage, despite the fact that I drink, I liked the attitude from the hotel to keep their believe above the tourists. Old hotel that need a lot of maintenance and worst beach in the Island, a lot of seahedges. "

Salama & Mbuyuni Bungalows

Salama & Mbuyuni Bungalows ★★★

📍 Unnamed Road, Matemwe

"Finding accommodation that ticks all the boxes in an unfamiliar country is often a challenge… but here, everything was simply perfect. After our many trips and stays around the world, Salama & Mbuyuni stands out as a true gem. From the moment you arrive, the welcome is warm, genuine, and attentive. The beautifully landscaped garden offers a verdant oasis, perfect for recharging. The accommodations are charming, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. Every morning, breakfast is generous and delicious, served with a smile. The three swimming pools, the bar, and its chill-out areas invite relaxation, all within a friendly and refined atmosphere. But what makes the experience truly unique is the team. All the staff members are remarkably kind, always available, and smiling. Paco and Maria oversee everything with passion and care—you can feel their love for what they do, and it shines through in every detail. Even the musical and dance evenings (something Paco could improve? :-)) are on offer, for those who like to keep the fun going. Close your eyes to book… but open them wide once you're there: you'll be charmed."

Zanzibar Sunrise at Bandas ★★★★

📍 Matemwe, Matemwe

"We have just spent a week there and it was a great and relaxing experience!! The resort is really nice, clean and cared, and the staff is extremely friendly. They offered yoga classes during the weekdays and we got one of the best massages in our lives in their spa. The food was great and the nights of live music (Tuesdays and Fridays) were top so we really enjoyed a lot our stay there. With regards to the area (not sure if this is the same in all Zanzibar), important to know that you cannot swim in the sea during low tides as the floor is full of stones and sea urchins but it is Ok in high tides. In the beach you have a lot of people trying to sell you things. They are quite Ok when you tell them “no, thanks” but the recurrence of these interactions can be a bit annoying. Last but not least, the sound of the sea during the nights in high tides is very very loud. We got used to it but it took for us a couple of nights."

Villa Kiva Boutique Hotel ★★★★
"We came to Zanzibar with a dive group and stayed four nights at Villa Kiva which has a premium beach resort feel and large, well-appointed rooms. The beach sand is among the nicest I've ever seen; super fine and nearly white, it feels incredible underfoot. The water in front of the hotel is very shallow with a very slight slope leading to huge tidal exposure, which affects the timing of boat traffic. We had to be picked up with a small skiff in the morning and then returned by taxi in the early afternoon from several kilometers north. The hotel restaurant is excellent with both an al a carte menu and typically a limited option multi-course daily menu. A good bar and wine selection as well as expresso coffee drinks are available."

"Over the past year, I’ve had the chance to visit many resorts in Zanzibar, and Villa Unavewaze truly stands out. The atmosphere is peaceful and beautifully designed, offering a cozy and intimate escape. The staff are exceptionally kind, welcoming, and always ready to help with a smile. The food was another highlight – fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a relaxing break, this place is a perfect choice. Thank you for a wonderful stay – I will definitely be back!"

Zanzibar Bahari Villas ★★★★
"This was, without a doubt, the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. We booked our stay ten months in advance and paid in full eight months before our arrival, yet it was nothing short of a disaster from the moment we arrived. Upon arrival, the manager failed to greet us properly. Instead, we were directed to sit on the sofas in the reception area without any explanation. It wasn’t until 1.5 hours later that we learned—from other guests in the same situation, not the staff—that our room had been overbooked. We were then shuttled to a half-finished hotel that didn’t come close to the standards of the hotel we had originally booked. We were assured this was a temporary arrangement and that we’d be moved to a villa near the booked hotel the next day. However, the following day we were taken to yet another substandard, half-finished building. This one had two small rooms with beds, an empty fridge, and little else. It felt as though the staff from the downstairs restaurant had been hastily evicted to make space for us. The building was infested with flies, lacked basic amenities like drinking water, towels, air conditioning, toilet paper, and WiFi, and appeared incomplete. The shower didn’t work, and there was even a man sleeping in the backyard. Worse still, it wasn’t anywhere near the hotel we had booked. Compensation wasn’t offered until we explicitly asked for it, and even then, all we received was free food for two days at the hotel. The service at the restaurant was slow, and our orders were frequently wrong. The food itself was mediocre at best. That said, the restaurant staff were very kind and welcoming, which was one of the few positives. When we finally got our room, there were no twin rooms available, so we had to settle for a double bed. While this was fine, the entire experience left a sour taste. The pool area was lovely, and the other guests were pleasant, but these were small comforts in an otherwise dreadful stay. This hotel has great potential, but based on our experience, it’s far from meeting even basic standards. I would not recommend it."

"A family-run place where you can stay and they'll help you plan what to see and where to go. Paco and María (the owners) are wonderful, attentive, and very attentive to their guests; you'll want to come back again and again. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The waiters are amazing! Zoi Boutique Hotel Zanzibar ★★★
"The Zoi Boutique Hotel is first class. We liked it so much that we extended our stay several times. The hotel area was perfectly maintained and the rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated. The location directly at the beach with marvellous white sand couldn’t be better. The food was delectable, wonderfully presented with an attractive, daily changing menu. And Gina, the best chef on the island, was fulfilling all our special wishes. But the best of all is the staff: All of them are very well trained, competent, exceptionally friendly and their dedication to their job is impressive."

"Such a magical place to spend 4 luxurious days after our safari. We walked straight onto the stunning beach from our accommodation, enjoyed time relaxing, swimming and reading by the pool, and ate wonderful breakfasts and dinners while there. Farah was an amazing host of the property, even lending my husband her husband's bathing suit after we realized my husband had forgotten his. She gave us a great history of the property and of the island, and ran a lovely yoga class every day. Perfect ending to our time in Tanzania. Couldn't recommend this more highly."

Zanoceanique Hotel ★★★
"This is a worst hotel in all of Zanzibar island. I am a Travel agency based in Arusha , Tanzania. This year I booked an accomodation for two french tourists for 8 days in this hotel Zanoceanique but they stayed only two nights and decided to shift to another hotel because this hotel , the bed mattress was very hard , my clients said they had an impression sleeping on a wooden board. They only slept 3 hours . Breakfast was not good there was not even a jam for breakfast . When they shifted to another hotel , I asked for refund for the days that my clients didn't stay but they refused to refund me while I have already paid back my clients 500 € . I reported them to the authority of Zanzibar but they still didn't refunded me. "
