Hotel Moderno ★★★

"I’m sorry to report that this hotel is not of a standard that most people would accept. I spent one night in a small room overlooking the bins - noisy bottle bins being emptied. The room smelt of smoke despite the ‘no smoking’ sign. No hot water so cold shower - but I learnt later that I should have run the tap for 10 minutes to allow hot water through! (Not very green.) There was a safe in the wardrobe which was sealed shut but could have been picked up and carried out! I had to ask for help to get the a/c going. The decor is brown and scruffy - very dated and desperately needs modernising. Next morning I requested a different room. They ‘upgraded’ me and the second room was bigger, overlooking the road/piazza with a shower that had hot water. Decor better but still needs sprucing up. The a/c didn’t work at all despite efforts from hotel staff. The mini-fridge had a light but was not cold so my milk went off. There is no social area in the hotel apart from the breakfast room. The photo of the lounge is of a chair pushed up against the reception desk. Breakfast was unimaginative. I took my own fruit. It wasn’t value for money. Good point: location right by railway station and an easy walk to the lakeside, restaurants and shops. The guy on reception tried to be helpful."

"Our stay at this hotel was a truly excellent and very pleasant experience. It is located on the lakefront, in a prime, central location. The hotel offers spacious rooms equipped with every comfort. A pleasant bonus is the panoramic terrace offering an excellent view of the lake. It is family-run: the owner is welcoming and extremely friendly. She gave us great advice for visiting Lecco and the surrounding area, providing us with a valuable map of the area. Compared to most other hotels, the Hotel Alberi offers an added value: warm, personal service. Highly recommended."

"The room is nicer than in the photos, and it's a 5-minute walk from the train station. The problem was that there was no reception, and even though I warned them that the train was delayed, there were no signs for the place when I arrived. So I called, and a very rude woman told me I didn't have a reservation. I told her I had made it days ago, and only when I was already annoyed did she find it. She told me someone would come to open the door in 10 minutes. When I arrived, a man showed me the room, but he didn't speak English. I asked if he could leave my suitcase there the next day so I could go sightseeing, and he said it cost €10. I told him that the room rate included that service, but since he didn't speak English, he told me I should call the number when I arrived 🙄… He left, and when I went to sleep, the bedspread was stained, and there was no one I could ask to change it. I didn't think the service was good. The bathroom was clean, but the furniture in the room was covered in dust."

"Nice views, friendly owners but you need a car as it’s up steep hills. Also air conditioning didn’t work and WiFi hardly worked either. The rules about not bringing food in should also be changed as there are no local shops around"
