📍 Yamami Takamine 3-1, Minamichita
★★★★ 8.8 (124 reviews)

"Please, please read this review and consider it. A Korean, a fellow Korean, puts in the effort to write a review for Koreans. I don't understand why this place is ranked #1 on TripBest. After using it, I realized it's probably just a hotel popularized by Koreans searching for blog posts and Instagram photos. There are plenty of ryokans in the area, so if the price is the same, I urge you to go somewhere else. In our case, it was a sudden decision, so we were pressed for time. We trusted the #1 Trip.com rating without searching elsewhere, but just looking at the Google ratings, you can immediately see that the Japanese reviews are dissatisfied. (During our stay, out of 10 groups, 5 were Korean, 4 were Chinese, and 1 was Japanese, so it's clear that even Japanese people don't visit. It's truly Koreans who keep this hotel afloat.) The only real advantage is its oceanfront location. Please, no one should be a victim like my family. Reasons for not recommending: 1. Uncleanliness: The building itself is a ryokan, so the private baths and rooms are made of wood, so dozens of cockroaches are a given. Seeing cockroaches scurrying up and down the outdoor bath and across the towels makes me want to stop using those towels. (If a review says you didn't see any cockroaches, you were just lucky. They were everywhere. Every restaurant didn't have an elevator.) The chairs in the room were broken. I sat down, and the handles were already missing, and the backs wouldn't even rise. This wasn't retro. It was just the filth of years. 2. Unfriendly: I'd clearly called the hotel the day before and on the day of, and they kindly told me everything was ready, so I trusted them and went. However, when I checked in, they told me the large public bath on the second floor wasn't available. I thought, "It's a shame, but I guess that's how it is and I can just use another place." However, the open-air bath was so inconvenient that I went back to ask why the public bath wasn't available. The answer, "Because it wasn't cleaned," was unfathomable. I asked another staff member, and they changed their explanation to "Because the ceiling was broken." So, I said I wanted to speak to another manager, and after waiting 30 minutes to meet with a higher-ranking staff member, they replied, "In that case, we'll let your family use the public bath for two hours." So I asked, "The other staff members didn't clean it and said it was broken?" The shocked silence I saw for three seconds is unforgettable. We expressed our dissatisfaction with preferential treatment, saying we were paying the same price and asking why we couldn't use it. I saw the absurd audacity of the staff to deny access to this space to visitors simply because it wasn't cleaned. It's a random hotel where you pay the same price and can use the facilities some days and not others. He asked me to show him how broken it was, so we went together, and there was nothing broken. All he could see was the worn-out parts of the facility. Instead, he was hastily filling the public bath with water, even though he said he'd let us use it. Seriously... 3. Communication difficulties: The staff only speak Japanese. I can't understand English. Except for the two desk staff, all the staff are Vietnamese, so their English and Japanese are limited. If you don't speak Japanese, it's extremely inconvenient. Even when I tried to communicate through the app, they kept looking confused. (They kept pretending not to understand, and the staff took turns telling me to use the public bath three times because the water was already running.) 4. Poor dinner and meals: The dinner and breakfast were absolutely poor. They tasted terrible. 5. Inconvenient location: There's literally nothing around the hotel. A convenience store is a 15-minute walk away. If you take a taxi like we did, you're completely isolated. I promised to leave a review so that no other Koreans suffer the same fate as we did. They offered to let us use the large public bath, but we declined. It's not that we didn't speak Japanese. One of my family members has been living in Japan for 10 years. Yet, this ryokan is deceiving its customers. If you're paying this much, please go somewhere else. It's such a waste of money for us Koreans to visit just for a few photos. I've been to many Japanese ryokans, but this is the worst I've ever seen. Seriously, please... Please go somewhere else. ㅠㅠㅜㅜㅠ"

"Really love this place it’s in a really narrow street but right in the middle and next to the Westport the amenities are generous great and I’ve never been in a sauna where you can actually see the ocean. They also have a big cold bath and in addition to do Hansen another hot bath next to the sauna they also play really nice music and From analog amplified hi-fi equipment that is top-notch. It’s a real pleasure, even though I’m not geek in that area. The whole island is of course very small does not much to do and you have to go there if you really want to relax and just enjoy some seafood. There are not many restaurants in the area and I would recommend to just reserve food at the hotel I had to breakfast, which was outstanding. It was Shabu Shabu tako squid, and lots of other Japanese sites."

"I think it's good for people who want to taste retro, although the paper was torn in an old hotel. It was a Japanese room, but it was very spacious and relaxing The employees were very friendly and nice Because there were few guests, the public bath was very empty and I was able to relax."

"I returned, looking forward to the fugu dinner. The food was delicious and the portions were generous, so I was satisfied. However, the other guests were still making noise even after midnight, with children's frolicking and adults' loud laughter echoing through the hallway, even though they weren't in the next room. It finally quieted down around 2:30 PM, but the irrational family was still a real nuisance. As a result, I had a terrible headache the next morning due to lack of sleep, and it was the first time I'd ever experienced such a painful experience on a trip. Being a guesthouse, the walls are thin, so I was prepared for some noise. I've heard babies crying in the night before, but at the time, I didn't think much of it. Unlike hotels and inns, even the slightest noise can have an impact on a guesthouse, so I think they should set a lights-out time and make an announcement. At breakfast, a woman, who seemed to be a family member, started talking loudly from her cell phone, so I think they could have asked her to leave the room, or at least made some consideration so I could have enjoyed my meal. I'm disappointed that I had to check out in the morning with such a bad feeling. It's a shame as I've used this place many times and it holds many fond memories for me, but I don't think I'll be using it again."

"If you look for a nice quiet place for a relaxing stay, this is a superb ryokan in the area that I would recommend. The ryokan building is beautifully decorated, despite its age. I particularly appreciate the sincere service from the manager and hosts. You can rely on them to take care of your stay. They could also provide pick-up and drop-off service at Utsumi Station. Dinner and breakfast were well-prepared with natural ingredients. Not only are they delicious but also presented nicely. The lobby also provides complimentary drinks and snacks - you can enjoy a little footbath there with a glass of whiskey and some nuts. Of course you cannot miss the marvellous scenery of the beach. The only downside is the public onsen bath was a little small. But in general we loved the stay."

"I used it on a day trip by train as part of Meitetsu Kanko's "Fugu Zukushi Plan." Tessa is arranged in individual portions, so it's easy to eat, and the dishes are served at a fast pace, from blanching to karaage to hot pot. The fried chicken was especially delicious. If you are a woman, the standard course is enough to satisfy you. It seems that there are private rooms, but most of the lunch customers gathered at tables in the large hall. I also used the large public bath on the 6th floor, but the indoor bath and outdoor bath were small enough to fit 6 people, and there was only enough washing space for 5 people, so the customers had to compromise with each other. The water in the outdoor bath is quite lukewarm, and the indoor bath is a bit hot at about 41 degrees, but you get used to it. Even though it's open-air, you can't really see the outside scenery. The building and the bathrooms were both clean and beautiful."

"Hotel has a friendly vibe and there is several options to connect with Japanese culture, tryout things and take photos with traditional Japanese closing. It wasn’t something I was interested in doing but certainly is a generous offer. There is no restaurant open on a Friday evening and it took me more than an hour to go to anything that looks like an open place but I couldn’t find anything and ended up buying stuff from family Mart found it disappointing that the hotel doesn’t offer any options The one is on top of the roof. It’s a little old and not super clean, but it does work well and the view is pretty nice. The whole hotel is in a multi story building from the 70s and the rooms are clean and functional I had a Japanese style room, which is not my preference, but I couldn’t find any other option."

"The entire facility is quite dilapidated and gives off an old impression. The baths are full of steps, and the cave bath and open-air bath (technically indoors, so not really open-air...you can just see the view from the window) are all at the top of a flight of stairs, making them difficult for seniors to use. Perhaps it can't be helped, considering how old they are... However, the reception, restaurant, and other staff were very kind and welcoming. The food was also delicious, and the staff's thoughtfulness was evident. The beer vending machine on the second floor was priced at 500 yen for a 350ml bottle and 800 yen for a 500ml bottle, which is exorbitantly expensive...why?! There are no convenience stores within walking distance, so I recommend buying drinks and other items beforehand. Other than that, I had a very pleasant time. I'd like to return."
