"Hotel is lovely, public areas and bedrooms are excellent quality. Staff are helpful. Apart from another resident had charged their drinks bill to my room and the staff asked me for proof I hadn’t ordered the drinks which seemed inappropriate and delayed my check in. Spa access is not included in price, costs an additional £15 for 24 hrs. The facilities are excellent though, the best gym I’ve seen in a hotel. Penrith is lovely. Definitely recommend."

"We’ve just stayed at Brooklands Guesthouse for the second time and once again absolutely loved it. It’s genuinely the best guesthouse/B&B we’ve stayed at, and we’ll definitely be back next time we’re in the Lake District. Sue is a fantastic host and makes the whole stay feel incredibly welcoming. The accommodation is immaculate, breakfast is spot on, and there’s loads of personality and character to the place rather than it feeling like just another B&B. The location is brilliant too. Penrith is a perfect base and gateway into the Lake District, making it really easy to explore during the day while having somewhere lovely to come back to. We really can’t recommend Brooklands highly enough. After two stays it’s firmly become our go-to whenever we’re visiting the Lakes. Thanks again, Sue - we’ll be back!"

"Great location but the hotel is very tired and could do either the weeds picking up, painting of the exterior, carpets cleaning etc. my bathroom door didn’t close so I couldn’t block out the awful racket coming from the pipes and the plug was broken. Small things like this would have made a difference because it isn’t a cheap hotel. Staff were amazingly helpful though so that was a massive positive"

"The service was good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our experience of the room was adequate, however we could not use the shower it was impossible to have a shower due to the low ceiling so we could not stand up straight. I personally could not use the bath due to myself falling a few years back and having a complete new elbow since this incident I am very cautious of getting into a bath. This being the case I did not have a proper clean. This was not good has we had been hiking and really wanted to get ourselves cleaned up and changed. The staff were very friendly and helpful and you could not fault the food at all it was excellent."

"This hidden gem was the perfect place for lunch! We ordered the Highland Fries and Goat Curry with no expectations, but it blew us away. The food is so good, the staff were extremely friendly (even squeezing us in despite it being busy), and the atmosphere makes it even better. We will be coming back here!"

Cross Keys Inn ★★

"Left at 7am after worst night stay possible. Checked in at 9pm, room was dirty (cobwebs everywhere, used toiletry products, coffee mugs had stains in the them), the room was all on a slant so the bed felt like we was rolling to one side & half of the lights didn’t work/bulbs gone. We didn’t use the shower facilities as the whole bathroom was in dire condition. We would’ve gone downstairs to raise this with the hosts but it was not a welcoming environment. The room was directly above the bar, on a Wednesday evening they decided to have a ‘lock in’ loud music continued until 12:30am and only stopped after I had to go downstairs to say something. We hardly slept a wink! Sleeping fully clothed on top of bed upon fear of catching anything from the bedding."
