Castle Hotel

Castle Hotel

📍 Castle St, Town

"Single female travelling for business. Check in was straight forward & friendly, Was given a room at the back of the hotel with no window, bedroom door was open on arrival and room was dirty and stank of smoke. Bathroom was damp with peeling paint. No TV on bracket... turned straight back to reception and explained, nice young man apologised and I was given a new room with big windows and a nice view of the hills, however room did not lock from the inside, the corridors and room smelt stale smoke. I reluctantly put up with it as early evening and I had an event to run the next day. The company will not be using your hotel in future. Some of the management feedback in relation to complains is pure ego driven ‘man baby’ energy and dangerously dismissive. Grow up and take accountability for your establishment."

"There is no front desk, the hotel that opens the door by itself. The location is very hidden and not easy to find. See the white sign door at the door of the street. There is no elevator, it is not convenient to carry luggage up and down the stairs."

"First of all the positives. 1.The room and bathroom were both very clean and elegantly decorated. 2. The house is in a nice area reasonably close to MT town centre. Unfortunately there were lots of negatives. 1. The main door wouldn't open and we spent about 10 minutes trying to get in before the door would eventually give in to a hefty shoulder. 2. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. Low, small with a mattress that was not conducive to a good night's sleep. 3. There was no wardrobe only a chest of drawers of which one drawer would not open. 4. The accommodation was supposed to be self catering but we never found any kitchen area and there was no information about how to find it in the instructions and we didn't feel comfortable wandering about the house trying to find it. 5. The directions said that it was a large white house as in the picture. It is now blue and was covered in scaffolding which covered the name of the house so it was difficult to know it was the correct house. 6. The shower was more a heavy mist. 7. The towels were never changed in the three nights we were there and given we were on a walking trip consequently were ponging somewhat by the end of our stay. I've stayed in much worse but it was in the bottom third of those we have. It wouldn't take much to raise this from a 2 star to a 4 star review but as another reviewer comments it appears the owner has rather lost the love for the place."

James' Place @ Pontmorlais

📍 74A High street, Town

"I had a very disappointing experience with this owner and the room they were letting. From the moment I walked in, there was a strong smell of mold and musk. Upon inspection, I noticed significant dampness and mold on the walls near the window. Additionally, the listing on *********** mentioned that dogs stay for free, but I later received emails stating there was a £20 cleaning fee for my dog. This inconsistency was frustrating. Due to health concerns about the dampness, I decided not to stay in the room and requested a refund. The owner refused, claiming I never showed up, even though I had communicated my concerns. I ended up without accommodation and lost my money. Furthermore, the room had a fake partition wall behind the bed, with gaps and flaking paint that exposed even more dampness. Overall, the experience was extremely disappointing. I would strongly advise anyone considering renting a room from this person to think carefully about their health and well-being. I would not recommend staying here."

James' Place at Brynawel ★★★★
"The room was well decorated clean and well presented as shown in the photos. We received good communication with the provider who also recommended lots of local restaurants and provided tips on climbing Pen Y Fan. Based on the recommendations we had a well planned trip and enjoyed meals at the tea room and local restaurant as suggested. Pricing was fair and this was close enough to easily access Pen Y Fan although there wasn’t too much too do in Merthyr itself."

James' Place @ Pontmorlais ★★★★
"This place was amazing, its in the centre of merthyr town near all local amenities. We used it as a base to go to a local party as it was really good value compared to hotels But we will return for a longer stay The studio was warm and cozy with everything you could need. It was spotlessly clean. The weather was awful and we wished we had taken food with us as we had to go out for breakfast. But everything was available to make our own. The bed was comfortable and the shower was brilliant. I left my electric toothbrush at the property and they were really quick to answer my email and have it posted back to me. ."
