ZipAir Luggage Policy: Carry-On & Checked Bag Allowance and Fees

Are you thinking about flying with ZipAir and want to learn if ZipAir luggage policy allows free checked luggage? The answer is no, ZipAir’s cheapest fare does not include a free checked bag. You can only have two carry-on bags which weigh max 7 kg in total at no extra cost.

Does ZipAir Come With Free Luggage? 

No. ZipAir’s Standard fare includes only a seat and two carry-on size bags that are 7 kg in total, and nothing more. So, it doesn’t allow free checked bags on the Standard fare and this rule applies to all routes. It doesn’t matter if you’re flying to Honolulu, San Francisco, or Seoul.

If you have any checked luggage you have to add them separately either as a one-off purchase or bundled into one of ZipAir’s Service Packages. Keep in mind that it is charged per piece, not by weight. And ZipAir luggage costs change based on the route you’re flying. 

ZipAir Carry-On Size and Weight Limits

ZipAir allows two pieces of carry-on baggage per passenger, with a total weight limit of 7 kg. Each piece has its own maximum dimensions, so do not assume they have the same size dimensions. Please check the size and weight of both of the bags when packing.

However, if you need more than 7 kg on board, ZipAir allows an upgrade to 15 kg total carry-on weight. So, you can add an additional 8 kg beyond the standard allowance but you need to pay the fee at least 24 hours before departure. 

Important Note: You can’t purchase this weight upgrade at the airport on the day of travel. You must  arrange it in advance online or through the Contact Center.

ZipAir Luggage Fee: Extra Carry-On Weight vs. Checked Bags

There are two separate ZipAir baggage fees and they are easy to mix up, so let me explain. One of them is for upgrading your carry-on weight, and the other one is for checking a bag into the hold. They are priced differently and serve different purposes. You can see them in the table below.

Extra Carry-on Weight (Upgrade to 15 kg Total)

Checked Bag (Per Piece)

If you pay either fee through the Contact Center or at the airport, instead of online in advance, a separate handling fee of approximately USD 6.42 applies. That’s why I recommend booking and paying online in advance to avoid extra cost.

Also make sure you understand how the checked bag fee is structured. ZipAir charges per piece, not by weight. 

So for example, three checked bags at 10 kg each still requires paying for three separate pieces. You are allowed to check a maximum of five pieces per person. However, each piece can weigh up to 30 kg and must not exceed 203 cm in combined length, width, and height. 

Important Note: ZipAir does not offer a transfer service, so if your itinerary includes a connecting flight, you will need to collect your checked baggage and re-check it yourself at the ZipAir counter for the next flight. 

ZipAir Service Packages (Standard, Value, Premium, Flex Biz)

Beyond the base Standard fare (seat + 7 kg carry-on only), ZipAir sells three bundled Service Packages that combine extras at a lower combined cost than buying them one by one. You must purchase these packages at least 48 hours before departure, and every passenger on the same booking must select the same package.

Route-Specific Exceptions You Need to Know

• Flex Biz package is not available on flights to Seoul. Also, in-flight meals and the amenity set are not included in the Value and Premium packages on South Korea routes. 
• Sporting goods still carry their own special baggage fees even within Value or Premium.
• You can make additional purchases after the initial booking through the Contact Center for Value and Premium packages, but not for Flex Biz. So, if you purchase the Flex Biz package you need to finalize everything at the time of booking.

What Happens If You Exceed ZipAir's Weight or Size Limits?

ZipAir treats size and weight limits as hard cutoffs rather than fee tiers, so you should understand the difference between "extra cost" and "not accepted."

• Checked baggage over 30 kg per piece or 203 cm combined dimensions is not accepted at all. There is no option to pay your way past this limit at the airport (sports equipment is the one exception, covered below).
• Carry-on baggage over 7 kg does not carry a flat overweight fee. Instead, you need to purchase the extra weight as the 8 kg upgrade (bringing the total to 15 kg), or the item must be checked instead (must be purchased up to 24 hours before departure and is not available at the airport counter on the day of travel).
• You must drop your checked baggage at the self-service kiosk or check-in counter at least one hour before departure, after that it is not accepted (regardless of route).

Tip: Buy baggage allowances online long before departure to avoid both the admin fee and the risk of being turned away at the counter.

Free Checked Item Exceptions on ZipAir

Some items can be checked free of charge, on top of your regular baggage allowance:

• Stroller: free if it belongs to the customer, a fee applies if it doesn't. No special bag is provided for checking it, and you can use your own stroller up to the boarding gate, though it will be returned to you at baggage claim on arrival.
• Child seat: free if it belongs to the customer, a fee applies if it doesn't. Not available for use on board.
• One wheelchair: free, additional wheelchairs are subject to a fee.
• Other mobility aids: free.

What Can't You Check as Luggage with ZipAir?

Beyond size, weight, and piece limits, ZipAir does not accept certain items as checked baggage under any circumstances. If these items are checked anyway, ZipAir is not liable for any resulting damage or loss.

• Valuables such as currency, jewelry, and precious metals
• Securities, stock certificates, or other important documents
• Identity documents such as passports and travel documents
• Fragile items, including electronic devices like computers
• Perishable goods (e.g., fresh food)
• Items that may transfer odors to or contaminate other passengers' baggage
• Product samples
• Improperly packed goods (airports do not provide packaging materials, and ZipAir is not responsible for damage from inadequate packing)

What If ZipAir Damages or Loses Your Baggage?

If your baggage arrives damaged, report it to ZipAir staff immediately upon arrival, since compensation is assessed at that time. Keep in mind a few limits on what's covered: 

ZipAir is not responsible for damage that is unavoidable during transport, cosmetic damage to the bag itself that doesn't affect its contents is not covered, and the contents of the bag are not covered at all. 

For lost, damaged, or mishandled baggage, ZipAir provides an inquiry form for formal claims.

Tips to Avoid Extra ZipAir Baggage Fees

• Buy baggage at booking, not later: Adding a checked bag or carry-on weight upgrade during the initial reservation is cheaper than adding it afterward through the Contact Center.
• Avoid airport counter pricing: Paying for baggage at the counter adds a handling fee of approximately JPY 1,000 on top of the standard cost, and some options are not available on the travel day at all.
• Weigh your bags at home before you leave: Carry-on is capped at 7 kg total across two pieces, so checking your weight in advance avoids last-minute repacking or an unplanned upgrade purchase at the airport.
• Consider the ZipAir Value package if you are checking one bag: It bundles a 30 kg checked bag, seat selection, and a standard meal, which costs less than purchasing each of those separately.
