What's the Best Way to Stay Connected in Japan? eSIM, SIM, or Pocket Wi-Fi?

If your phone supports eSIM (most newer models do), definitely go for it! It’s so much easier—no tiny cards to lose, no extra devices to charge, and no need for those awkward conversations at airport kiosks. Plus, Trip.com’s eSIM prices are seriously amazing!

But if you're traveling with your crew or your phone isn't eSIM-compatible, pocket WiFi or a physical SIM card are still solid choices. Just pick whichever works best for your adventure!

3 Amazing Benefits of Using an eSIM in Japan

1. Ready to use the moment you touch down in Japan!

One of the biggest perks of an eSIM is that you can enjoy seamless Internet access the moment you touch down at the airport in Japan.

With traditional SIM cards, you’re often stuck buying one at an airport shop or waiting to pick up a pre-ordered card.

But with an eSIM, you can download everything in advance and hop online the moment you step off the plane. This makes it a breeze to book a taxi or navigate your way to your hotel, ensuring your trip gets off to a smooth and stress-free start!

2. Travel with total peace of mind—no risk of loss or damage

Traditional SIM cards are tiny and need to be handled with care. It’s easy to lose or damage them, especially when you're swapping them out on the go during your travels.

On the flip side, since an eSIM isn't a physical card, you don't have to worry about losing or damaging it. You can skip the hassle of fumbling with a tiny pin to open your SIM tray or the stress of accidentally dropping your SIM card while you're on the go.

3. Dual SIM convenience

With an eSIM, you can easily enjoy the benefits of dual SIMs. This feature lets you stay connected to two different networks on a single smartphone, keeping you connected wherever your adventures take you.

This means you can keep one SIM card for Japan and another for your travels abroad, making it a breeze to switch between networks as you hop from one country to the next. With dual SIM, you can skip the headache of setting up new Internet access every time you visit a new destination.

3 Important Things to Consider Before Using an eSIM in Japan

1. Device compatibility may vary

Ready to explore with an eSIM? To get started, you’ll need a smartphone or tablet that supports it. While most of the latest devices are eSIM-ready, some older models or certain budget-friendly options might not support this feature just yet.

This means you'll need to check if your current device is eSIM-ready, which is just a quick extra step. If you're considering upgrading to a new device to take advantage of eSIM, just be sure to factor in the cost.

2. This can only be used on one device at a time.

Traditional physical SIM cards are super easy to swap between devices, which is great if you like using one card across multiple phones or tablets.

On the flip side, because an eSIM is embedded directly into your device, it’s a bit trickier to move it around. If you’re planning to juggle multiple devices during your Japan getaway, just keep in mind that an eSIM might be a little less flexible!

3. Having trouble using your phone number?

Keep in mind that some eSIM data plans don't include a local phone number, or may require an additional fee. This can be a bit inconvenient when you need a local number for things like snagging a restaurant reservation or getting in touch with your hotel, so it’s always a good idea to check the details before you go!

Since traditional SIM cards often bundle a phone number with your data, it’s a great point to keep in mind when you're weighing the switch to an eSIM for your upcoming trip!

3 Essential Tips for Choosing the Perfect Japan eSIM

After testing out various eSIMs in Japan, here’s the lowdown on what really matters when choosing the perfect one for your adventure:

1. Stay on top of your daily data limits

Here’s the deal—some providers try to pull a fast one with "total data" amounts. For example, 2GB for a week might sound okay until you realize that’s all you get! Instead, look for plans with daily data limits to keep your adventures going.

Trip.com’s plans got options ranging from 500MB, 1GB, and 2GB, all the way up to a whopping 100GB of data every single day. You’re definitely going to need that extra data for Google Maps, scrolling through Instagram, and figuring out what that mysterious vending machine drink actually is!

2. Why Coverage is Everything

You know what’s even worse than having no Internet? Having a spotty connection. Some budget-friendly eSIMs only work in major cities, which can leave you stranded the moment you head off the beaten path. Be sure to choose an eSIM that keeps you connected everywhere you go in Japan.

Trip.com runs on major networks, so you’re covered from the heart of Tokyo to that hidden ramen shop in the countryside. Say goodbye to "no service" anxiety for good!

3. The Sweet Spot: Price vs. Duration

Don't just grab the cheapest plan! Think about your entire trip:

• Planning a weekend getaway? A 3-day itinerary might be just the thing!
• Planning a two-week adventure? Grab a 15-day plan—it’s way more budget-friendly than buying multiple shorter ones!
• Not sure about your travel dates? Trip.com has you covered with flexible options for trips ranging from 1 to 30 days.

Pro Tip: Secure your eSIM before you take off! There’s nothing worse than trying to set it up at the airport while you're feeling jet-lagged. Just scan that QR code while you wait for your bags, and you’re all set to go!
