As one of the world's largest metro systems, the Shanghai Metro is an urban rail transit network serving the Shanghai metropolitan area. Its first line, Shanghai Metro Line 1, opened in 1993. Today, the system operates 21 lines, with 416.6 kilometers of new lines under construction, and a total of 517 stations in operation.

If it's your first time in China, taking the subway might seem overwhelming—but there is no need to worry! This guide will make your metro ride smooth and easy.

Entering the Station

Multiple subway entrances may lead to the same station, so it doesn’t matter which one you use. Once inside, you’ll find yourself in the same station area.

Buying a Ticket

  • Ticket vending machines are available in every station. If you’re unsure how to use them, ask station staff for help.
  • Alternatively, you can use a Metro QR Code (generated via apps like Metro大都会 or Alipay) to scan and enter.
  • Important: Your entry and exit methods must match—if you enter with a QR code, you must exit with the same code (not a ticket or metro card).

Passing Through the Gates

  • Your bags will go through a security check before entry.
  • After security, follow the signs to your desired metro line (some stations serve multiple lines—even up to 4—so check carefully!).
  • Scan your QR code/ticket at the gate to enter.

Waiting for the Train

  • Head to the platform as directed. Screens will display train arrival times.
  • Double-check:
    • The direction of the train (matches your destination).
    • The line number (some stations have multiple lines—don’t board the wrong one!).

Boarding the Train

  • Let passengers exit first before boarding.
  • During rush hours (weekdays 8–10 AM & 6–8 PM), trains can get extremely crowded. If needed, wait for the next one patiently.

Exiting the Station

  • At your destination, follow exit signs.
  • Look for green indicator lights above the gates—they show the correct exit direction.
  • Use the same method to exit as you did to enter (e.g., QR code → QR code).

Language is no barrier. Shanghai Metro has bilingual (Chinese/English) signs, and staff can assist if needed.

How to Buy Shanghai Metro Tickets: 6 Options Explained

Single Journey Tickets

How to Pay for Shanghai Metro: Ticket, Metro Card & QR Code

You can buy tickets at the self-service machines in any station (English interface available). Simply select "Single Journey Ticket," tap your destination station on the interactive map, and pay with cash (fares range from ¥1-15) or via WeChat/Alipay.

The machines only accept coins, ¥5, or ¥10 bills—be sure to carry small change.

Mobile Payments (Alipay/WeChat Pay)

To use Shanghai Metro's QR code system, you'll need either a Chinese SIM card or an international mobile account with activated payment (foreign cards can be linked via Alipay's TourCard). But the limit is that QR code works for 1 person only.

Steps:

  • Open Alipay → "Transport" → "Shanghai Metro"
  • Scan QR at turnstile (green arrow = entry; red = exit)

I had a pleasant stay at Shanghai Novotel. There ia a free shuttle bus from Hongqiao Airport or Hongqiao Railway station. The conceige helped me to upgrade to a tent themed room. The staff, Mr Cody, also helped me to order food from ******* for supper after a long day at Disneyland.

This hotel is very close to the subway, and they offer shuttle services to Disneyland and even airport transfers, which is great! The hotel also provides free soft drinks every day and foot-soaking tubs – it's incredibly comfortable!

Deluxe Queen Room
The following review is based purely on my personal experience and is for your reference only: Overall Rating: The room was great overall; both cleanliness and service were excellent. Although the room wasn't huge, it didn't feel cramped. The hotel exterior was understated, but the lobby had a 'low-key luxury' vibe. My stay was incredibly comfortable, especially the mattress – it was so soft! The room environment was tidy, clean, and the service attitude was good. The value for money was fantastic, so I'm giving it a five-star overall rating – definitely worth staying. 1. Service Experience: The service from the front desk staff was very much on point. They explained the room information clearly and even helped with a complimentary room upgrade. Whenever I called the front desk for assistance, my issues were resolved promptly and efficiently. The hotel has a concierge group chat where you can arrange car services, request bedding, and more. They also provide thoughtful tips, and the concierge replies in the group chat are super timely – so convenient! I especially loved the evening foot bath service; it was incredibly thoughtful – absolutely adored it! 2. Facilities Experience: The room layout was very good, with a wet and dry separation in the bathroom. The toilet had disposable seat covers, and the sink and shower areas were spacious and convenient. The only minor drawback was that the hairdryer wasn't very powerful, so it took a bit longer for ladies to dry their hair. The soundproofing was quite good; even though the room faced the street, it wasn't particularly noisy. 3. Food and Beverage: Breakfast: I had an early entry pass for Disney, so I didn't have time for hotel breakfast on the first day. On the second day, I needed to catch up on sleep, so I can't comment on breakfast. Late-night snack: I originally planned to rush back from Disney for a late-night snack, but I ended up playing too late and didn't get back to the hotel until 11 PM, so I missed it. However, this service itself is really great! Drinks: The first drink each day is free, with six options available. Personally, I prefer mineral water, hahaha! Those who love 'happy water' (soda) would surely be thrilled! The hotel allows food delivery, which is really convenient, and they even have robot delivery service! 4. Location: The hotel isn't far from Disney. According to online guides, taking a taxi to the nearest drop-off point costs less than 25 RMB one way and takes about ten minutes. It's also within 500 meters of the subway, but dragging a large suitcase makes that distance feel a bit inconvenient. Compared to the excellent location of Xingheji right next to the subway, this hotel doesn't have an advantage there. But... the shuttle bus service really shines here! Must-mentions: 1. The hotel's bed and pillows were incredibly comfortable, especially for someone who walked 30,000 steps. It was fantastic for relieving physical fatigue; the next day, I was so tired I just wanted to lie in bed and didn't want to get up. 2. The hotel has a shuttle bus to the city center, which is super convenient – no need to lug your luggage around! Thumbs up! I didn't get a chance to take pictures of the hotel, but I hope my personal experience can help those who need it.

  • Take Exit 1 or *3*; the garden is a 5-min signed walk.
