As one of the world's largest metro systems, the Shanghai Metro is an urban rail transit network serving the Shanghai metropolitan area. Its first line, Shanghai Metro Line 1, opened in 1993. Today, the system operates 21 lines, with 416.6 kilometers of new lines under construction, and a total of 517 stations in operation.

If it's your first time in China, taking the subway might seem overwhelming—but there is no need to worry! This guide will make your metro ride smooth and easy.

Entering the Station

Multiple subway entrances may lead to the same station, so it doesn’t matter which one you use. Once inside, you’ll find yourself in the same station area.

Buying a Ticket

  • Ticket vending machines are available in every station. If you’re unsure how to use them, ask station staff for help.
  • Alternatively, you can use a Metro QR Code (generated via apps like Metro大都会 or Alipay) to scan and enter.
  • Important: Your entry and exit methods must match—if you enter with a QR code, you must exit with the same code (not a ticket or metro card).

Passing Through the Gates

  • Your bags will go through a security check before entry.
  • After security, follow the signs to your desired metro line (some stations serve multiple lines—even up to 4—so check carefully!).
  • Scan your QR code/ticket at the gate to enter.

Waiting for the Train

  • Head to the platform as directed. Screens will display train arrival times.
  • Double-check:
    • The direction of the train (matches your destination).
    • The line number (some stations have multiple lines—don’t board the wrong one!).

Boarding the Train

  • Let passengers exit first before boarding.
  • During rush hours (weekdays 8–10 AM & 6–8 PM), trains can get extremely crowded. If needed, wait for the next one patiently.

Exiting the Station

  • At your destination, follow exit signs.
  • Look for green indicator lights above the gates—they show the correct exit direction.
  • Use the same method to exit as you did to enter (e.g., QR code → QR code).

Language is no barrier. Shanghai Metro has bilingual (Chinese/English) signs, and staff can assist if needed.

How to Buy Shanghai Metro Tickets: 6 Options Explained

How to Pay for Shanghai Metro: Ticket, Metro Card & QR Code

You can buy tickets at the self-service machines in any station (English interface available). Simply select "Single Journey Ticket," tap your destination station on the interactive map, and pay with cash (fares range from ¥1-15) or via WeChat/Alipay.

The machines only accept coins, ¥5, or ¥10 bills—be sure to carry small change.

Mobile Payments (Alipay/WeChat Pay)

To use Shanghai Metro's QR code system, you'll need either a Chinese SIM card or an international mobile account with activated payment (foreign cards can be linked via Alipay's TourCard). But the limit is that QR code works for 1 person only.

Steps:

  • Open Alipay → "Transport" → "Shanghai Metro"
  • Scan QR at turnstile (green arrow = entry; red = exit)

Everything was great. Fast check-in and check-out. A wide selection of items for breakfast. There's a lounge area on the 30th floor with drinks and snacks. The location on Nanjing Road is superb. We stayed on the 21st floor and there was no noise, just a magnificent view. The family room was perfect for a family with two children. Daily room cleaning was provided.

The high-floor view is great. The staff are friendly and it's clean. The air conditioning works wonderfully, but it's also humid, so there's a slight odor, but it's fine if you spray some air freshener. Most importantly, the location is superb.

Summer Imax High-Definition Projection Exquisite Sextuple Room
Due to Typhoon Bavi, my high-speed train was canceled, and by chance, I ended up choosing Shijia B&B. I was pleasantly surprised! The value for money is incredible, and the location is excellent – just a 2-minute walk from the subway station. There are plenty of places to eat and shop nearby. The room facilities are complete; the kids absolutely loved watching movies on the projector. The auntie who served us was very enthusiastic; she even brought us slippers despite the scorching heat, which really warmed my heart. It was very quiet at night, and I slept soundly. This hidden gem of a B&B definitely deserves a 5-star review! ⭐

Featured Room - 10-Person Occupancy
The room exceeded my expectations. We arrived early, and the auntie cleaning was incredibly thorough and very nice. My family also spoke highly of the room's environment. You can see the Lujiazui 'Three-piece Set' (referring to the three iconic skyscrapers) right from the window, which means the location is excellent. It's very convenient for transportation, being close to the metro station, making it easy to get to other attractions. Dining is also a breeze; just head downstairs and cross the overpass, and you'll find plenty of places to eat. The price was reasonable too, and the housekeeper had a wonderful attitude.

What I enjoy in this hotel is that I was able to sleep comfortably. The breakfast didnt stood out for me, there are other better places. The carpets on the floor which I booked are covered with cloth, made me confused the first time I see that. The location is ok, when you get out in less than 5 minutes of walking you'll be at the train station Line 1 Exit 14. There are convinience stores nearby which you need to walk for less than 2 minutes. They are strict with 2pm checkin time. facilities services

Treasure Big Bed Room
Despite being a relatively newly renovated Hotel, the Hotel' facilities are pretty aged and were showing clear signs of wear and tear. As a solo traveller, safety is especially of utmost concern for me and I do not feel safe in this Hotel. For a late check out extension granted, when I asked, I was actually not required to head down to the main counter to have my room card revalidation.

This hotel belongs to an international chain, and offers multiple shuttle services daily to Disneyland, The Bund, and Pudong Airport, making it super convenient for a Disney trip. They even offer Disney merchandise for rent. The breakfast is incredibly rich and delicious, especially the Old Shanghai Wontons. Getting around is a breeze as it's only about 300 meters from the subway. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit Disney!

We were upgraded for free to a Panda King Room, which was really spacious for two adults and two children. The hotel facilities are new, the room was spotless, and the butler service was very efficient. I especially enjoyed the late-night snacks here. Plus, having the shuttle service to and from the airport and Disney is incredibly convenient for families with a lot of luggage.

Great for families with kids! The service was excellent, and items were delivered quickly. The only downside was that one of the bathrobes seemed to have a faint sweat smell, like it had been used and not replaced with a fresh one. In the evening, they offered a complimentary foot soak, which was very relaxing!

Double Room
Good location, near metro, like that can do taobao shipping but we can go find our parcel ourselves in storeroom(some hotel staff will help to find for u). Very busy hotel. Since they R so busy they will call to remind U in morning to check out before 12pm. They have a lot of ppl wishing to enter before 12pm , since they keep having ppl calling to ask if can check in earlier during our check out. 😅 Can see they r so busy everyday so many luggage at waiting area after check out. Very small size room but workable space for two small luggage. If U have many or very big suitcase then it may be very cramped. Went to Shanghai to celebrate anniversary but other hotels we stayed gave us better hospitality. I will skip breakfast as it was average. If not fuss and want convenience of location, U can consider this hotel.

Our first night, the room smelled like sewage so bad. The staff wasn’t able to change room at first, but eventually found one. It’s def sub par to the other JI Hotels if that’s what you came for. The only pro was the location and the metro was right in front of it.
