From the very beginning, booking this hotel was an emotional rollercoaster. I had already bought and paid for it on Trip.com, and shortly after, their marketing person contacted me via WhatsApp saying the room I booked had the wrong rate. They asked me to cancel my hotel booking and book directly through them instead đ . Is this some kind of scam by the hotel staff or what? I called them directly, and they still asked me to cancel, which is crazy! Even though my booking was confirmed when I called the hotel, the marketing department claimed there were no rooms available. Wow, that really made me angry! In the end, I refused to cancel because I had already paid. Your wrong rate or whatever else, what does that have to do with me? All I know is that when I booked, the room was available and I had paid for it. And what's even crazier is that when I checked out early in the morning, the receptionist said everything was fine when I handed over the key. But shortly after, they WhatsApped me saying a glass was broken. However, I left everything in good condition, and we didn't break anything. Make your profits legally; don't cheat customers. I'm never staying there again đĄđĄ
My flight was later in the evening but late check out timing will be 12 pm the latest. In this case I will be out without room for quite a number of hours. To my surprise, the hotel does cater a room for guests to rest and sit in after check out. This room is provide for guests who has check out but flight is much later, to have a place to rest and relax before proceeding to the airport. This is a very thoughtful action. Â Thanks.
Environment: The facilities are very new, and the bedding is good too.
Service: The front desk service is excellent, with staff on duty at night, which is convenient for check-in and check-out.
Location: Convenient, with many dining options nearby.
Transportation: It's located in George Town, a bit far from the Old Town on foot (but fine if you like walking). You can take the bus, but you have to wait đ. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are convenient.
Security: There's security, and the elevator requires a key card, so it's quite safe.
Hygiene: For an apartment hotel, it's exceptionally good. Free daily cleaning is offered, but you need to inform the front desk.
Swimming Pool: Very good, many families with children were playing there.
The accommodation is in a convenient location, easy to travel to, and there is a convenience store at the hotel. The hotel is near the sea, has a good atmosphere, and the receptionists are friendly and provide detailed information about the room. There is a room deposit of 100 ringgit, which will be returned on the check-out day.
Very new hotel an very fun vibes.
Room was very spacious and clean, though could still see some renovation leftover stains. The bathroom door could have been a better/heavier door, the current one feels too light and a little cheap. The bed is huge and comfortable! Balcony in our room is perfect for hanging swimwear to dry! Car park height restriction is 1.7m so larger cars need to park outdoor, but security does a great job to make sure that thereâs space! There is no lift from car park to the lobby which was a shame, but itâs a work in progress. The walk from drop off to lobby is filled with steps/fairly steep ramp, so itâs tricky for people with weak knees or in wheelchair, though kids full of energy will find it very fun! Overall very good sty and friendly staff in the hotel. Xmas decorations were amazing and insta friendly!
This is my third stay at this hotel, having visited previously when it was Evergreen Laurel and now as Gurney Bay Hotel. I have always appreciated the atmosphereâit has a classic, old-school charm that still manages to attract a younger crowd. Another highlight is the breakfast, which is consistently excellent and never disappoints.
However, as a 5-star hotel, I believe the property should maintain a level of service and maintenance that matches its rating. Unfortunately, this stay had some significant issues. On our first night, we suffered from heavy bed bug bites. While the hotel moved us to a new room, we suspected the bed bug issue persisted there as well, though to a lesser degree. Furthermore, the second room had a water leak under the bathroom basin and the water wouldn't drain properly.
I believe the hotel is still well-managed overall, but there needs to be more attention to detail. Maintenance should be proactiveâinspecting rooms thoroughly and frequentlyârather than waiting for a customer to complain before taking action. I truly like this hotel, so I hope management takes this feedback seriously to ensure the 5-star standard is upheld.
Hotel room js clean and friendly reception as well as security guard. I was very tired coming down from Hatyai (flood zone). The staff allow me to check in earlier. Appreciate that.
Bed is comfortable and ac is cold. The only negative part is the Ac is quite noisy when itâs at night. Drumming sound from the aircon vent.
Many eateries nearby also 2 shopping (Gama and 1st Avenue) are nearby
Overall is a comfortable hotel to stay.
Gotten assigned a corner room which seems to be larger as compared to other rooms in the middle. The room is very spacious and comfortable. Amenities are plentiful and the best thing is the complimentary drinks and snacks in the room.
The gym equipment are quite comprehensive and they have saunas as well.
They provide buggy service to the other side (another hotel under the same name) and shopping mall (limited to Gurney Plaza only).
One thing to mention, the LED lighting looked nice on the exterior of the hotel, but in contrast it is a bit annoying when staying in the room. Forced to shut the curtain to block out the lights.
The hotel is great, staff are impeccable in their attentiveness to the guest. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast buffet was absolutely outstanding, with an abundance of choices catered to satisfy every taste. The pool and gym are also fantastic, with the added convenience of being open 24/7, to put in an early morning workout. Spacious and very well equipped and maintained.
However, our stay was not without faults and there are definitely some things management needs to address:
- the noise from the elevator automatic announcements is absurd! the âdoors opening/closingâ alerts are constant and audible from neighboring floors as well as your own.If you stay in a room numbered xx15 or xx16, be advised you will not have a pleasant time - we asked to change rooms immediately as soon as we realized this.
- elevators can be SLOW, magma slow. it can take a long time to move around if you are staying in a higher floor. We stayed for 2 nights and during that period 2 separate elevators were down for maintenance. It took us a total of 15 minutes to move from one floor to the other, after getting our room changed (for reasons stated above) and new keycards.
- the level from street noise audible in the room is just inadmissible at a supposed 5-star hotel level, at least in the rooms facing the main road. These rooms have, inexplicably, a single pane of glass and very tall windows, which makes soundproofing pretty much nonexistent - mat rempit bikes racing in the dead of night, the call to prayer blasting from the loudspeakers of the mosque nearby before 6am, drilling from the construction site nearby, and other nuisances that definitely disturbed my sleep.
Beautiful heritage hotel with a touch of colonial charm. The location is convenient, within walking distance to many attractions and eateries. Room was spacious and clean, and the staff were polite and attentive. Breakfast spread could be slightly improved, but overall it was a very pleasant stay.

GGuest UserStrongly recommend Sunway Georgetown. Tho 31 yr old, extremely well maintained, at least for my room. Location 5*. Just outside hotel bustling with activities n street food stalls in evening. Walking distance to Macalister Road, again bustling with plenty food choices/shops. I canât find even 1 negative aspect of hotel! Staff very friendly n helpful. The shower water pressure was very strong, can aqua massage. The young male housekeeper always smiling. Also strongly recommend must visit, Kirishima Japanese resto in the lobby of Cittitel Hotel. For hotel setting, n qualify of food, esp sashimi air flown from Japan, canât get this price n qualify in Singapore! So good that we went twice. Even their Otoro n chuotoro, charged by per piece or set of 5 thick cuts, not think slices, was value for $! Look for the manageress Jane Tan, a gem n star of the resto! Another must visit for morning snacks n kopi, Moh Teng Peow Nonya kueh. Very authentic n traditional setting. Kuehs are handmade in-house! Wonderful experience! The only negative is Penang island itself! Quite dead town, not much changes in tourist attractions from 30 yr ago. Penang hill, khek lok si temple, chawrasta morning market, Armenian street, Cornwall fort. Used to be popular komtar mall, even newer parangin mall are deserted with most shops shuttered! There are many old charm colonial buildings. Most McDonaldâs are housed in such colonial buildings. Penangites are generally very friendly. We happen to be here during durian season. Macalister Road n even outside hotel are lined with durian stalls. Relatively much cheaper than in Singapore n I m talking about the AAA grade mao san wang cultivar. Fooding n bingeing is apt for Penang, not touristy spots tho, esp if u have been here before, even long ago. Attached pictures show day n nite views from same angle in the room.
__51FL920****Penang's oldest 5-star hotel, with 140 years of history. Both the interior and exterior of the hotel are absolutely beautiful, creating a very relaxing atmosphere. We stayed in a Deluxe Twin Room in the Heritage Wing. Although the price wasn't cheap, it was definitely worth every penny and highly recommended. For breakfast, if you prefer more variety, I'd suggest the buffet in the new building â the selection is so vast it's dazzling, you'll only wish your stomach was bigger!
AAnonymous UserSlight disappointment due to the stay experience different from previous stay. But average still like the location with beautiful beach and with water sport activities at the side.
GGuest UserI absolutely love this hotel! It far exceeded my expectations. Initially, I just wanted a value-for-money option for my Penang trip, but staying here turned out to be amazing. The location is very convenient for exploring George Townâs attractions. The breakfast is fantastic! On my last day, I had to catch an early flight and paid for breakfastânever expected the variety and quality of food to be so worth the price. The staff are friendly, and the housekeeping team is polite and welcoming. The night view through the floor-to-ceiling windows was my favorite moment each night. Iâll definitely choose St Giles again when I return to Penang!
MMiaoMeowI found the hotel to be overall excellent and beautiful. The front desk and bellhop staff were quite enthusiastic, while others were just okay. The hotel facilities were also ample; for instance, since we arrived in the afternoon, the hotel allowed us to check in early. This meant I could easily take a nap on a sun lounger by the pool and even follow the sun to explore different parts of the hotel. The weather was great, and the ambiance was lovely. The hotel's location is fantastic, about a five-minute walk to the delicious Natsu. It was a shame that Bora Bora, right next to Natsu, was closed on Wednesday, so I missed out on the fire show, but the food was superb. The location is also a big plus for solo travelers wanting to go to the beach at night; I enjoyed a safe and peaceful time by myself. There were many breakfast options, but I felt the taste was pretty standard, nothing to write home about. My only minor complaint is that the shower head kept falling down and couldn't stay in place.
LLinnLeoWe had an enjoyable 8-day, 7-night stay at this property. The location is excellentâright in the heart of Penang and less than a 5-minute walk to Penang Road.
The room was clean and comfortable. Special thanks to the service attendant, Asad, who was very attentive and friendly. He kept our room in perfect condition throughout our stay. The only minor downside was that the pillows were a bit too soft for our preference. Nevertheless, we still slept well as the soundproofing was goodâwe didnât hear any noise from the corridor or nearby rooms. We also enjoyed the great view from our room on the 16th floor.
We also used the gym throughout our stay. While it had sufficient equipment, the space was a bit small. Swimming pool at roof top has excellent view.
Overall, good value for money and highly recommended to friends visiting Penang.

MM326936****The room was quite new, it was an apartment. The pictures listed are actual photos, so you can trust them. We stayed in a two-bedroom, one-living room apartment for four people. It's located a little way from the city center, so we took taxis for everything. If you're staying in the city center, the apartments are quite old, so it's not necessary. I think this place is quite nice, and there's even an infinity pool on the rooftop. Highly recommended.
