"Our family of 4 chose Kaliwa Lodge as a place to stay before our 2-week safari trip starts. We booked ourselves by contacting the lodge directly. Don’t use the email inquiry page at the website, which didn’t always work. You can find them easy via WhatsApp. The staff was very responsive after we contacted them via WhatsApp. Booking activities and transportations in advance were also easy. The bungalows are spacious and clean with a great view over a rainforest valley. The common-area terrace provides a relaxing environment and offers a beautiful view of the Kilimanjaro peak when the clouds are cleared (often in the late afternoon). The food (breakfast, packed lunch box and dinner) was delicious. The restaurant manger Opendo was extremely accommodating and helpful. We had breakfast very early for our day activities on two of three mornings. We had to cancel our Machame day hike due to the rain today, but were rewarded with some rest & relaxation in the room with fire. In summary, we highly recommend the lodge as a great place to stay before or after your Kilimanjaro climb or your Tanzania safari. Especially, for those Safari travelers, the lodge is a good place to use as a base to explore the Kilimanjaro mountain a little bit, an excellent alternative to hotels in Moshi."

"had issues with the room & electricity power shut down twice when i was in the toilet. This was frustrating especially after a long day of travel! We couldn’t charge our phones or use hairdryers as it might trip the power. Showers had low pressure & little heat so be prepared. I found that the pillowcase and towel were had stains on it. Owner is nice but as a bed and breakfast spot cleanliness should be maintained."

Stella Maris Lodge ★★★

"Stayed as part of organized Mt Kilimanjaro climb through Peak Planet. Stayed the day before and after our climb. Nice, clean accommodation. Staff were extremely warm, friendly and accommodating. Food & drink was excellent. Left all belongings not required on climb with Stella Maris. All belongings were returned to us as left after our climb. This hotel is situated in the back of a grade school although when in or at the back of the hotel you would never know. My son and I walked a few blocks from the hotel. Met some delightful and curious children from the school."

"I was fortunate to stay at House of West Kili during a cycling tour around the Kilimanjaro area. We were warmly welcomed and give a nice orientation of the facilities. The grounds were immaculate and well groomed. The lodge rooms are huge, super clean and the plumbing was all working well. I felt like a VIP. The meals were excellent as we had dinner and breakfast before heading off. I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for a really nice place to stay. It was an absolute treat to stay at."
