Red Roof Inn Columbia East - Ft Jackson

As someone who travels occasionally with a larger dog, I'm limited to what hotels I am able to use. The only chain I know of that allows my 70-lb black lab to stay at every location is Red Roof Inn. The room amenities and pricing are not the issue I have with Red Roof Inns. Neither is the front desk staff. In almost all my stays, I'm usually struck by HOW POORLY the rooms are cleaned and maintained. Case in point is the Red Roof Inn Columbia East. I entered my room and discovered that the 'wood' floor was 'movie theater sticky'. Also there was a splatter of white liquid that had dried on the television set. I can't imagine that anyone coming in to clean the room could have missed these two issues. Because of a problem with the room locks on our side of the building (apparently I wasn't the only patron who was locked out of their room after using the key once) I was upgraded to a remodeled room on the front of the main building. The room wasn't sticky (and no dried liquid on the TV), but the AC / heater had a broken plastic cover that hung off on one side, and initially the unit didn't work at all (I discovered that the GFI had tripped on the plug and was able to reset it). Again, items that any half-hearted attempt at cleaning of the room should have identified for repair. On the bright side, the front desk staff was very considerate, and even held onto the dog dish I had left in the room until I passed through Columbia on my way home two weeks later. They are responsible for probably the second and third star in my rating.

The first challenge here was access. The hotel fronts on Gervais Street, but you have to access the parking lot from Lincoln Street. They have gated parking, but you can press a button to be buzzed in when you first arrive. After that, your room key can be used to access the lot. The sign said that guest parking was $14 per day. Check in was fairly quick. We got a room on the 4th floor (of 5). They had multiple luggage carts of at least 2 different types (I saw at least 4 total), which I pay somewhat more attention to now after staying in a larger place that only had 1... The hotel seemed quiet. Rooms toward the back would probably help in this regard. The location is on a main street in town, about 2 - 3 blocks from the state capitol building complex. It is a short walk (5 minutes or less) to a large number of restaurants or bars in the area. If you are here on a weekend, the Soda City Market is located on (mostly closed for just pedestiran use) Main Street starting about 5 blocks away. Breakfast was included with the stay. It started at 6 a.m. on the Saturday we were there for it. I'd say it was about average for what hotels are providing now, post-Covid. I had enough to eat, anyway. Our room was fine; we only had one bath towel for some reason, but we didn't notice until it wasn't convenient to request a 2nd one. The bed was comfortable. I've stayed in 3 different hotels now in / near Columbia. For staying in the walkable radius of downtown, this is a good option.

Extended Stay America Suites - Columbia - Ft Jackson

Columbia|1.29km from Forest Lake
Review of Extended Stay America Suites Columbia Ft Jackson South Carolina August 24, 2020. First the positive. The motel was a few minutes away from Fort Jackson. Now for the negative. We were charged more than double the going rate of $55.00 simply because this Extended Stay Facility was close to Fort Jackson on our granddaughter’s graduation day. The room they gave us was on the third floor facing I77 traffic which disturbed our sleep all night long. Then at 5 am the city garbage truck woke us up with its loud back up beeping and its banging the dumpster after we finally got a bit of sleep. We expected a two-room suite, a two room with a living room and a full kitchen as usually advertised, but this was an old one room place worse than a Motel 6. The rustic two burner stove and refrigerator in the kitchenette looked like something out of a 1950’s movie set and there were no kitchen utensils like advertised. The Hotel.com website said “Full Breakfast” which was a lie for when we got there, we were told all they had was a grab and go bag, and there were no bags just granola bars, muffins, oatmeal packet, cookies; just junky stuff. The lounge chair extended out, but refused to return. The door was so poorly hung that you could see light coming through the open crack at the bottom meaning any critter could crawl into your room. For the amount we paid we were expecting a full Extended Stay place. What a disappointment this place was.

The room is renovated and relatively new. The cleanliness is ok on the surface, the coffee pot is very dirty. Breakfast ends too early. The location is very good, the surrounding shopping and restaurants are very convenient.

I’m guessing there are staffing issues. There’s NO hot breakfast - you have to go to the front desk to get a paper bag with yogurt, oj, and fruit cup. Packaged muffins and coffee were self serve. But there were no signs and no warning in the reservation that this was the only option. I would not have booked there if I’d known and feel like we didn’t get what we paid for. We are on a 16 hour road trip and wanted to start the day with a hot breakfast. The 4 th floor is under renovation as well… doesn’t affect the rooms - just the halls that I could see, but during the week I’m guessing there’d be work going on. The beds were clean and comfortable, but shower curtain is old and stained; floors had trash here and there; phone didn’t work at all (found out when I tried to call the desk to report people arguing loudly in the hallway at 3am); and someone had smoked since the bathroom reeked of smoke. I will say that Justice at the desk was very busy all by himself at 8pm check in but quietly friendly; Matt (maintenance) came and sprayed the bathroom (although it didn’t last). I think the bathroom will need to be scrubbed from floor to ceiling to get the stench away (burn marks on toilet too). So frustrated at inconsiderate people!! The woman at the desk in the morning must have gotten an earful - I don’t fault them for noisy guests. Expected much better from Marriott.

I stayed here for a week due to bereavement in the area. I was hesitant and was actually only planning to stay one night then move to a different hotel. The hotel is under new management and has some work to be done. But the staff makes up for it. Shalena and Ms Dee are the best! They were kind, friendly and genuinely cared about my stay. I would stay here a million more times over due to the staff. Breakfast was great and housekeeping checked with me everyday!

Ned is an amazing asset to Hilton. Ned went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. A coworker and I sat at the long business table to finish up our workday, Ned made sure to check on us several times and even brought food and drinks to us, even though we were not in the restaurant/ bar area. We were able to relax while we we finished our workday. Ps. The brisket grilled cheese sandwich is AMAZING! Make sure you order one, you won’t regret it.
