The Clifton

The Clifton

📍 1 Queen's Rd, Shanklin
★★★★ 9.1 (49 reviews)

"I found the Clifton Hotel to have positives and negatives. It's position on top of the cliff in Shanklin is very good. As was the excellent breakfast. The lounge, bar and outside arras were also good Negatives. It appears that our luxury room was adjacent to a doss house in a somewhat delapidated state. There is no lift. So if you fancy hauling your cases upstairs? The view to the rear of the hotel is none existant. You couldn't eat in your room. For me the bar menu was limited to basket meals. Also if you didn't want to drink the wine in the fridge they removed the wine glasses??? Would l stay at the Clifton again. Yes l would. But l would go for a room with a view to the front of the hotel. Take a room on a lower floor and ignore the no eating rule in the room imposed by the staff. I'd also take my own wine glasses"

Luccombe Villa Holiday Apartments Hotels in Shanklin

Luccombe Villa Holiday Apartments

"The Burrow is a truly intimate hideaway, perfect for solo travellers or couples longing for peace, quiet and a little romance. Set on the ground floor, it offers easy access while still feeling deliciously tucked away — a private retreat where seclusion and comfort gently embrace you. Every return to The Burrow feels like coming home to your own secret sanctuary. After a day spent exploring the island, time seems to slow the moment you step inside, allowing the outside world to softly drift away. Beautifully furnished with care and understated elegance, the apartment is bathed in the glow of warm, ambient lighting, creating an unmistakably cosy and romantic atmosphere that invites you to relax from the very first moment. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered to ensure a truly restful stay. On arrival, we were greeted by a charming welcome — a pint of fresh milk waiting for us, perfect for a soothing cup of tea after our journey. It’s these small, thoughtful touches that make The Burrow feel both effortlessly luxurious and wonderfully welcoming. The secluded outdoor space is equally enchanting, ideal for enjoying a morning coffee, a leisurely breakfast or an evening drink. Surrounded by sheltered greenery, it’s a peaceful spot to feel the cool breeze, curl up with a book or simply savour the stillness. The outdoor pool area, also beautifully secluded, sits within stunning gardens. I made the most of the glorious weather last week, relaxing poolside with a book and soaking up the calm. The Burrow has become my personal retreat, and I have already booked to return in both May and July this year — which I think speaks for itself. Chris and Kate complete the experience with their exceptional hospitality. Warm, kind and genuinely welcoming, they make you feel at home from the outset. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and their friendly, easy manner ensures every stay is comfortable, relaxed and memorable."

"Our second visit to this superb b & b. Expertly hosted by Hayley and John whom endeavour to ensure your stay is most enjoyable and relaxing. Cleaned to a very high standard and the breakfasts are top notch with a great and varied selection. Any hot food is expertly cooked by John and the whole dining experience is overseen by Hayley. Both hosts are very knowledgeable regarding places to visit and things to do. A well deserved high rating on Tripadvisor."

Villa Mentone Hotel Hotels in Shanklin

"The room we booked was not anything like the photos advertised. I was so disappointed ! I felt very misled . The room was small and very tired looking. The layout just made the room feel difficult to use . The shower in my room had very poor water pressure , the cubicle itself was tiny ! I could barely move once inside. The bed was uncomfortable affecting my sleep . The room was not great ! We were charged over £3 for a can of coke at the bar and when I asked for some ice I was told they didn't have any in that particular bar ! We then saw other people taking their own drinks and food / take aways into the bar and using the bars plates etc .. We have never known hotels let you bring your own food and drink into the bar area . The breakfast was reasonable and offered a good selection of items . Full English and continental. The staff themselves were all lovely and very hard working . The staff were the best thing about the hotel . Always polite and happy to talk ."

Luccombe Hall Hotel ★★★
"Lovely hotel, friendly staff, perfectly situated close to the beach and the Old Village. A small amount of free parking on site. Very impressed with the facilities inside the hotel - including indoor swimming pool, hot tub & sauna. Be careful with your choice of room, by selecting a non-sea view, standard room for 2 x people we were allocated an accessible room right next to reception/main entrance on ground floor, which was really noisy, with very little privacy. Such a shame as the rest of our experience there was so good."

"This hotel was only 2 star so went with low expectations. Have stayed at many hotels in IOW at the budget end on coach tours. This one was excellent by comparison. Food was plentiful, the rooms very clean and comfortable. Staff were just lovely. Charlotte worked so hard, I hope the manager appreciates her. Alison took such care and Mitch on the last night was fun in his Jamaican berry and dreadlocks. To top all of that there was brilliant entertainment. Glen and Jules brilliant, Paulo maybe not so much."

The Clifton ★★★★
"Once again, the Clifton hotel proved to be a home from home. During our stay the weather was somewhat changeable but still managed a restful morning sat enjoying the sun on our room’s balcony, enjoying the uninterrupted sea view. For other times, when the weather was a bit more inclement, the hotel is friendly and cosy and sitting in the lounge and snug bar was perfectly relaxing. Sadly, the wet weather meant we couldn’t sit in the beautiful garden this time but who cares when delicious light meals and homemade cakes are available inside? The town centre is an easy walk from the hotel, as is the seafront and beach, the clifftop walk passes right in front of the hotel and Shanklin Chine at the end of the road. Of course, being the Isle of Wight, there is a great choice of attractions within a short distance. Back at the hotel, breakfast is good, the rooms are consistently clean and the beds comfortable – it’s always a wrench to leave at the end of our stay! Looking forward to returning next year."

"Had another great 5 day stay here with my sister. Our room was lovely overlooking the sea and very comfortable, it was also situated perfectly for my mobility needs as right next to the lift ( room 57) A slight change to the breakfast service but was actually ideal and the food was delicious. We have made a request for a Christmas booking so hoping they will be able to fit us in."
