In 2026, American Airlines passengers are allowed one free personal item.

Whether a carry-on bag is included free of charge depends on the fare class: while most passengers may bring one carry-on bag at no extra cost, Basic Economy passengers are generally not permitted a free carry-on bag and must check it for a fee.
