The Redstone Inn and Suites

"We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary, and the Red Stone Inn and Suites proved to be a very romantic getaway. A classic Queen Anne Victorian bed and breakfast, the inn is located well within Dubuque's downtown district, so we were able to walk throughout much of the downtown area, including the farmer's market, Fenelon Place Elevator, and Cable Car Square. Not once did we feel we were in an unsafe environment, or in bad neighborhoods. In fact. the Dubuque Police Department is located right next to the hotel. The people we met on the streets were quite friendly and fun. Robert proved to be an excellent host - he met us when we arrived, carried our suitcase up to our third-floor room, gave us our keys and showed us the amenities, and how things worked, then left us with a smile and a handshake. A second-floor room would have been nice, but our room was quite beautiful. There were many antiques, including a settee set, miniature shadow boxes featuring wedding dresses and old photos, and yet modern features, such as a jacuzzi located in the bathroom. The room was quite roomy and comfortable. The Inn itself is historically beautiful, with large turrets, rich antiquities, stained glass, marble fireplaces, and gleaming wood accents. The handsome wooden front desk is a work of art, as is the carpeted stairway that leads to the guest rooms. We spent a comfortable, relaxing evening sitting on the wicker furniture on the front porch, watching the residents of Dubuque go about their daily lives during the evening hours. The Inn was very quiet, and it almost seemed as if we were the only ones staying there. However, there were many other guests who showed up for the wonderful breakfast provided by Robert. Fresh fruit, cereal, rolls, yogurt, and a great egg dish, hand-made by the host, were served in the beautiful dining room, as wonderful, recorded piano music played in the background. Guests intermingled, and the host visited with each of the guests, topping off coffee and offering seconds, during this great breakfast. Overall, this is a great place to stay, especially, if you're looking for a quiet, romantic get-away. Robert is a wonderful host, and we will definitely, definitely come here again."

The Hancock House

"We stayed in the premium room (Library) on the ground floor after an interesting check-in. The innkeeper does not answer calls or texts promptly so you may stand outside the door for a while. Parking is down the hill and you drag your bags up a steep incline and up tall porch steps to get inside. Others had to further drag their things upstairs to their rooms. On a positive side, the house details are beautiful and the view from the large porch each day was stunning. There was coffee and cups so I made a pot each morning. Some snacks were out to stave off hunger until you drove to your breakfast spot. Can't walk from here as it's on the side of a cliff. Public spaces are quite lovely and I felt like I was leasing a room at a museum, that finely detailed. Overall, worth the money."

Four Mounds Inn

"This place is a treasure! So peaceful and quiet with beautiful views over the river, you would never know you were so near town. Our hostess, Dee, was friendly and welcoming and told us the interesting history of this venue. We stayed in the wonderful cabin, but toured the houses and would gladly stay in any room on the property. We ordered breakfast which was served in the big house and it was beyond our expectations. Cooked to order eggs/sausage/veggies with granola/yogurt/fruit, coffee and juice. Delicious! Cabin was clean and cozy. We sat on the deck overlooking the river in the afternoon and ended up making sandwiches for supper because we didn't want to leave the ambience. We could have cooked - the kitchen is well equipped. After breakfast we walked the trail around the acreage. You can rent the cabin, a room in one of the houses, an entire house or the entire facility."
