The Redstone Inn and Suites

"We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary, and the Red Stone Inn and Suites proved to be a very romantic getaway. A classic Queen Anne Victorian bed and breakfast, the inn is located well within Dubuque's downtown district, so we were able to walk throughout much of the downtown area, including the farmer's market, Fenelon Place Elevator, and Cable Car Square. Not once did we feel we were in an unsafe environment, or in bad neighborhoods. In fact. the Dubuque Police Department is located right next to the hotel. The people we met on the streets were quite friendly and fun. Robert proved to be an excellent host - he met us when we arrived, carried our suitcase up to our third-floor room, gave us our keys and showed us the amenities, and how things worked, then left us with a smile and a handshake. A second-floor room would have been nice, but our room was quite beautiful. There were many antiques, including a settee set, miniature shadow boxes featuring wedding dresses and old photos, and yet modern features, such as a jacuzzi located in the bathroom. The room was quite roomy and comfortable. The Inn itself is historically beautiful, with large turrets, rich antiquities, stained glass, marble fireplaces, and gleaming wood accents. The handsome wooden front desk is a work of art, as is the carpeted stairway that leads to the guest rooms. We spent a comfortable, relaxing evening sitting on the wicker furniture on the front porch, watching the residents of Dubuque go about their daily lives during the evening hours. The Inn was very quiet, and it almost seemed as if we were the only ones staying there. However, there were many other guests who showed up for the wonderful breakfast provided by Robert. Fresh fruit, cereal, rolls, yogurt, and a great egg dish, hand-made by the host, were served in the beautiful dining room, as wonderful, recorded piano music played in the background. Guests intermingled, and the host visited with each of the guests, topping off coffee and offering seconds, during this great breakfast. Overall, this is a great place to stay, especially, if you're looking for a quiet, romantic get-away. Robert is a wonderful host, and we will definitely, definitely come here again."

"A wonderful historical house, looks like it's over 100 years old, but all the modern comforts and amenities. Stayed in the Library - highly recommended and very comfortable king bed. Met with Simon and learned the amazing history of the mansion. We will be back. "

Four Mounds Inn

"I've wanted to stay at Four Mounds for at least a decade and am SO happy we finally had the chance! We stayed in Billy's Room, which was very large and had amazing windows. It shares a bathroom with Viola's Room, but they don't book the second room to a separate party so that the bath is not shared. The bed was quite comfortable and we appreciated the reading chairs too. The property has historical interest. The staff member who served us our amazing breakfast (fresh-baked pumpkin bread; the best home fries I've ever had...) gave us a short talk about the history of the property, and we walked around the grounds. Book on a weeknight for an extra-good deal!"
