"I really liked the hot springs with high iron content in this ryokan: I had sore throat for about 3 weeks before the journey, but it recovered just after the first bath. We also liked that family baths are for free if they are vacant (in the evening there wasn't any problem). The staff is attentive, thank you very much. The food was delicious, and there was more than enough for a man. However, we would recommend choosing a Japanese-style breakfast, since frying eggs on a burner is not very convenient. Nevertheless, everything was delicious. As for the drinks for breakfast, there was only coffee from the coffee machine. But there is always green tea in the room (we had problems with the hot pot, so they brought us a thermos). The only thing we did not like was the heating. However, it is unlikely to do anything with it when it is minus 3 degrees outside at night. Without heating, it was very cold, the floor was cold. But the heating is very noisy, and it is difficult to find a temperature balance. We sweated a lot at night under the blankets, and since the shower is not in the room - it is in the onsen, it was inconvenient. Thanks God, we had spare pajamas with us. Overall, for this cost of accommodation we can give 5 points."

"The environment is quiet, there are hot springs inside and outside the room, the accommodation supplies are complete, and the dinner and breakfast are rich. The clerk also recommended that we go to Kurokawa Hot Spring Street in the evening. It was a great stay."

While looking at a river at a hotel of the out-of-the-way among the mountains Time of the supreme bliss to soak in an outdoor bath

"This was my first time experiencing a Japanese-style hotel, and everything from the hot spring facilities to breakfast and dinner was absolutely perfect. It’s definitely a place I’d consider visiting again. The only drawback is its location upstream of Kurokawa Onsen, which is a bit far from the town. If you want to see the town's night view, you'll have to drive. During the day, you can hike from the hotel down to the town, and the natural scenery along the way is beautiful. Since it's downhill, it's not tiring. I recommend booking the hotel's shuttle service to pick you up from the town's visitor center in the afternoon, so you don't have to hike back uphill to Sansuimoku."

"Located in South Asu, there are hot springs to soak in. When the weather is good, you can overlook the entire Asu volcano. It is quite beautiful. The room is quite good. The western-style room upstairs is much smaller! A good place with pleasant scenery! There is also a Taiwanese employee who can speak fluent Chinese and is very enthusiastic about introducing local attractions and food!"

"This is the largest onsen hotel in Kurokawa; in fact, it's the only large-scale hotel there, all others are inns. The hotel itself is quite spacious, featuring three public baths and two private onsens. If there are many people, you might have to wait in line at the entrance, but it's usually not too long. It operates on a one-night, two-meal basis. Dinner is a buffet with a good variety of dishes. The taste is decent, nothing spectacular but not bad either. I personally quite enjoyed the breakfast, which was also very plentiful. Our room had a bed, not a tatami mat. I thought it was pretty good, even though it was small. The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area and was very clean, although the yukata was a bit unflattering. The hotel has a rooftop with what was supposed to be a telescope, but it was out of order when we visited. In the evenings, there's a mini-bar offering some drinks and snacks."

"Nice little cottage. As some reviews shared, location is not close to town which was expected. The friendly couple at check in and process is smooth even when they don’t speak English. Did not realise the amenities was without towels and tried to knock on their office past 9pm to ask if they are able to provide but there was no answer. Had to live without towels for the 1 night I was there unfortunately."

"wonderful ryokan, we had a river view from the window. delicious kaiseki dinner and breakfast. totally recommend! tattoo-friendly onsen, but the showers are only on the first floor. the private outdoor rooftop onsen does not have a shower, so it’s better to shower downstairs first; otherwise, it can be quite chilly to rinse yourself outside using the buckets. there is free parking, but the street itself is very narrow and busy with pedestrians; the ryokan staff can help with parking. the staff warned us about the parking situation in advance and advised leaving the car at a free parking lot in the village center, but there were no spaces available."

"The hotel staff were incredibly friendly and polite, with radiant smiles (the kind where even your eyes seem to smile). The front desk staff even came out to greet us when we checked out, offered to take commemorative photos, and helped us drive our car across the street. They greeted us again as we drove away; we truly felt their warmth and hospitality. The room was also very large (super large for a pure Japanese-style room; I roughly counted over 25 tatami mats in the main space), and the view was fantastic, overlooking a river, with the sound of flowing water (of course, you had to open the window; the soundproofing was quite good). The onsen (hot spring) is another highlight of the hotel. We took the hotel's free shuttle bus, which runs every 20-30 minutes from the hotel entrance. It takes you to the hotel's open-air onsen, which has five different types, all of which were amazing, though surprisingly few people were using them 😂😂😂 My friends also said it would be a worthwhile experience to stay here again."

Cross the bridge from Kawabata Street in the hot spring town to reach Shinmeikan. Stone-paved paths and nostalgic architecture welcome you. Enjoy our signature free-flowing thermal spring baths—including a unique cave bath and open-air rotenburo. Relax in riverside rooms soothed by gentle breezes and the murmuring stream, melting away daily stress. For meals, gather around the traditional irori hearth to savor local specialties like grilled river fish skewers and charcoal-grilled meats—a true taste of the countryside.

"I recently visited Kurokawa Onsen in Kumamoto and stayed one night at Yamamizuki Shinmeikan. Overall, it's a traditional Japanese ryokan suitable for those looking to relax in hot springs, but there are a few things to note. The location is its biggest advantage, right in the heart of the Kurokawa Onsen area. It's just a few minutes' walk to other ryokans and small shops, making it super convenient to use the 'onsen hopping pass' (Tegata) to try different baths nearby. Driving to Mount Aso or Aso JR Station takes about 40 minutes, and there's a free shuttle bus to the main gate. Although the road is narrow and winding, the scenery is beautiful and worth the trip. There are river views and forests nearby, and the air is fresh at night, giving a very tranquil feel. Cleanliness was average. The tatami-style room was spacious enough for luggage, but as it's an older establishment, there was a bit of dust in the corners. Although the bathroom was cleaned daily, water marks in the shower area weren't wiped dry, which made it feel a bit less comfortable during the stay. Fortunately, the bedding was soft and odorless, and towels were changed promptly. In terms of service, the staff were friendly. The front desk attendant helped with simple English and check-in was quick. There's also a 24-hour free coffee machine and vending machine, convenient for drinks late at night. The kaiseki dinner was fresh, featuring local vegetables and river fish, which was very satisfying. The Japanese-style set breakfast was simple but flavorful. However, the facilities were a bit disappointing. Although there are five hot spring baths, including a 30-meter-long cave bath and an open-air mixed bath, which were very therapeutic, some pools didn't have attached showering areas. You had to walk further to rinse off, which wasn't very convenient. The rooms don't have private bathrooms, relying entirely on communal ones. The TV and fridge are basic, and there's no Wi-Fi in the rooms. The older design of the floors felt a bit cramped. In conclusion, this ryokan focuses on hot springs and a traditional ambiance, suitable for budget travelers. But if you're looking for modern facilities, you might want to reconsider. Next time I visit Kurokawa, I'll try other newer establishments."

EElinaNikThis is the best hotel in Kurokawa! 1. Stuff is kindly meet you, explain everything and help as well as it possible. 2. Ryokan has 6(!) private bathes with different style. No extra payment,, no reservation. You can available status on your TV. During my staying there was at least one ready for use, no time all of them was using. 3. Water. Just perfect, has a right temperature and composition. Just put yourself into the bath and feel relaxed just since that second. 4. Rooms. Clean and fresh. 5. Open-air bath is cool to, for me a bit too hot. And I was the only one who use it during the dinner time. 6. I had only breakfast, but it is service in private room in dinner hall. Very delicious with various of dishes. 7. The hotel located at two sides of the river. Travelers could enjoy a scenic view from the bridge.

YYumaoshenshuangchiThis is a large ryokan located around Kurokawa Onsen, with a main building and an annex. This time, we booked a room in the annex, which was very spacious and even had a loft. There were two private onsen baths right in the room, and another one just outside the room. The experience was absolutely incredible.

GGuest UserI stayed for one night in mid-May 2025. This new, traditional-style hotel is designed for privacy and a relaxing holiday. Absolute privacy—even at breakfast, you won't encounter anyone else; your own waiter serves you in a private area. It was raining, so I spent the entire time at the hotel. A stylish, huge room with a large private onsen made you want to stay in it. A huge TV with good sound and YouTube, which is not always available in Japanese hotels. Fast WiFi. The kaiseki breakfast was delicious, so delicious that I could have eaten another one. The hotel is located in a village, well away from the town of Kurokawa and the bus terminal. There is no store in the village; there is nothing at all there. The bus terminal is a 30-minute walk from the hotel, only with one backpack. A local bus runs very infrequently between the hotel and the bus terminal. However, in the morning, after breakfast, a free shuttle runs from the hotel to Kurokawa.

CChuck ChuangI love the interior of this resort. The staff members are really friendly and helpful. I had little knowledge in selecting local onsen resort, so my initial expectation was not high. Much to my surprise, I love everything this hotel has had. Facility wise everything looks brand new. The room is spacious and comfy. The public bath and indoor onsen are big and clean. As for the meals, the presentations were good and they were delicious. I have no complaint about it. Keep up with the good work. Look forward to staying there again.

GGuest UserI stayed here with my parents. We had separate rooms and booked this room for them. It was new, well-equipped, and wonderful. It was a very cold day, but the heating in the room and the semi-open-air bath in the room were warm, so it seemed comfortable for my elderly parents. The staff were also very courteous. Although I didn't book this room, the room type we stayed in was cold, as the heating in the semi-open-air bath and the room didn't work very well. If you're staying during the cold season, I think it's better to choose a D-type room or higher. I would like to visit again during the better seasons.

KKKelvinNestled right next to the river, near the village center. Close to the main walking street and attractions. Traditional Ryokan with very good hospitality. Excellent outdoor onsen, with many smaller private onsen in the annex building. Cozy environment, a really good place to relax. The Kaiseki dinner was really good! The curated selections were great in taste, textures and varieties. Best night's sleep in our 7 day tour of Kyushu. Breakfast was good as well, followed by sightseeing around Kurokawa Onsen before checking out. Truly enjoyed our stay here, thanks to their staff. Great people, lovely place.

GGuest UserTravelled as a family, they made special arrangements for us to have earlier breakfast at 7.30am as we had to depart the hotel to Takachiho Gorge by 8am. Yukata was of the wrong size for my mum and we had a hard time getting the staff's attention to change the size. Food is average for ryokan omakase, my daughter had a change to feed the duck. GGuest UserFrom entering the parking lot everything is taken care of, the rooms are enormous, the size of and amenities of a decently sized appartment along with a large kitchen and finally a private onsen fit for two people right next to the beautiful Kurokawa onsen river, aswell as a small waterfall creating an absolutely dreamy experience. The Ryokan is a about a five minutes walk outside the city center which is absolutely no problem as you have everything you need there. The gentleman in the reception speaks decent English so even with no japanese knowledge you should be fine They only seem to have four rooms, we got lucky and booked two days ahead, but most likely won't be that lucky. Absolutely would go again, great experience

JJackieXThe hot spring hotel in Kurogawa was not booked, and Trip.com chose a holiday house in the nearby Tibetan hot spring. Arrive before 6 o'clock, otherwise the staff will get off work. The house is very old, the name is ”Mei”, and the other house is a very new one and should be much more comfortable. The kitchen is fully equipped; The indoor hot spring is very hot, you have to try the temperature before entering the water. The towels are small and you have to bring your own bath towels.
