"This hotel is amazing! We loved it, the only thing to note is that it’s quite a journey from Ella (around 45 mins). I would suggest staying at Ella for 1 night or so and experiencing that, then visiting and unwinding here. The staff, food and room were all fantastic."

"We had a wonderful time at this lovely hotel in Kataragama! The rooms facing the paddy field were absolutely stunning. The staff's warm welcome from the moment we arrived set the tone for a fantastic stay. They were incredibly flexible with our requests. Throughout our stay, every single staff member was friendly, welcoming, and made us feel at home. The food was delicious, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a peaceful and memorable stay in Kataragama."

"We were very disappointed with our stay at the GRAND TAMARIND TREE resort, and therefore would not recommend and would not return! The resort rooms are very basic for the high price you pay in comparison to other options, and in our opinion the resort does not provide good value for money."

"We stayed here for 2 nights during our wonderful tour of Sri Lanka. We had a very warm welcome, with a tradition of guests lighting a brass tower with the national bird on top which was a bit of fun for us tourists. We had kind and thoughtful service from Chamaga, Thushara and Ranidu throughout our visit, from delivering an iron to our room to serving us breakfast, beers at the pool and our evening meal after an afternoon of safari. We are delighted to say we actually met Kalu himself! Better known as Sri Lanka’s national treasure cricketer Romesh Kaluwitharana! My husband and I have not been cricket fans, however his beautiful collection of memorabilia was awesome, fully on display to any guest. He was also kind enough to show his vegetable garden and butterfly garden to us personally. All vegetable from the garden are used in the hotels menu. Chef Jayahal needs a special mention, he makes all items in the menu from British,American, oriental and Sri Lankan Dishes. All made fresh with lots of organic ingredients from the garden. The versatility of this chef is unbelievable,as they taste authentic, REALLY.We tried club sandwich, oriental noodles and the spring rolls were the best I’ve ever had, even in China! His omelettes were perfect for the English visitor and the Sri Lankan curry/ multiple side dishes are a must for any traveller. My husband said it was the best prawn cocktail he had ever tasted! Bravo Jayalal 👏🏼"

"A boutique new hotel with natural-style rooms, very original and simple. Beautiful. The food was excellent. The service was excellent, and everyone was friendly and helpful. We took advantage of the bushwalk, boat safari, and jeep safari. We saw a huge herd of elephants, crocodiles, birds, and many other creatures. Our guide, Anuradha, was fantastic, spoke very good English, and had a wealth of knowledge about nature. We will remember this stay with gratitude."

The food was delicious, especially the traditional Sri Lankan dishes. Perfect for large groups with its smart layout. Highly recommend for a relaxing, green getaway!"

Mandara Rosen Yala, Kataragama

Mandara Rosen Yala, Kataragama

📍 Mandara Rosen, No.57, Detagamuwa, Kataragama
★★★★ 7.8 (48 reviews)

"Whilst I’ve stayed at Mandara Rosen many times, I’ve honestly never taken the time to write a review. But this time, something felt different — and I thought it was time to finally pen my two cents. In the past, my experiences have always been lovely. The staff have been helpful, the rooms clean and well-kept, and the atmosphere calming — a perfect space to unwind after a day in Kataragama. The pool has always been a personal highlight, especially after being out in the hot sun during religious observances. It’s been a place I’ve recommended without hesitation. The food, too, has never disappointed. I remember the buffet spreads — generous, delicious, and satisfying in every sense. Something for everyone, and nothing to complain about. This time, however, was a shorter visit. I was in Kataragama briefly, with two things planned — lunch at the hotel, and arrangements for a day room so those of us traveling (a group of five) could freshen up before heading back to Colombo. I had called ahead and was informed that a day room would be provided for Rs. 15,000, which I agreed to. But once at the hotel, that offer was off the table. Instead, I was told I’d need to take two rooms — totaling Rs. 30,000 — just for a quick change and refresh. That felt unreasonable. In today’s context, where most travelers aren’t staying overnight and hotels are struggling to fill rooms, this seemed like a short-sighted way to recover costs — at the guest’s expense. I did have lunch at the restaurant, and once again the food was fantastic. Though it was à la carte this time (understandable given low occupancy), it was still flavorful and well prepared. The restaurant staff were kind and welcoming, and I appreciated their service. In the end, I went to another hotel that offered a day room at nearly one-fifth the price. A hotel of similar standard was also willing to offer one room at the same rate of Rs. 15,000, as initially promised here. Unfortunately, the only reason I didn’t go there was the distance — otherwise I would have. What saddens me is that instead of gaining business, Mandara Rosen lost it that day. All for the sake of an extra room rate. And that’s the only reason I’m giving this a 4-star rating — not for the hospitality, the setting, or the food, which remain excellent — but because it felt like the focus shifted from understanding the guest to maximizing the margin."

Mahoora - Udawalawe by Eco Team

📍 Udawalawe National Park, Angunakolapelessa, Moneragala
★★★ 9.0 (48 reviews)

"Highly recommended We spent two nights at Mahoora Tented Safari with a private tour guide. Solomon, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and we learned so much about nature and wildlife. Despite it being monsoon season, we were very lucky and got to see not only lots of animals but also elephants and babies. However, this should not be taken as a reflection on the quality of Mahoora Camp. The staff were extremely helpful and the food was excellent. We enjoyed every moment."

Funky Leopard Safari Lodge Bordering Yala National Park Hotels in Moneragala

Funky Leopard Safari Lodge Bordering Yala National Park

"We stayed one night, the operators that helped carrying the luggages are nice, but it is the only thing in this place. We requested a twin bed room and it was a double bedroom. After one hour talking about the difference between two beds and one double-bed io lo room, after showing them the pics published on line that the room had to be with 2 separated beds, the offered a hostel room with mould inside next to the AC! We asked for an immediate refund, but they refused and, always after one hour, they called a lady to separate the beds and put the right bedsheets in the same room of the beginning!!!…So it was only a problem to change the bed sheets and we argued and got angry for an unuseful hour. It is not finished! We booked a private safari tour with a private guide. At 05:15 am of the day after, 15 minutes before the departure , the operator guide came and said we had a sharing safari tour with another couple and no guide. When he saw that we were extremely disappointed, the guy asked if we booked for a private tour…He had no idea of the service we requested! When we came back from the shared Safari the receptionist, a gentleman with mustaches, did not trust us, we had a private safari tour with a private guide. We got really upset because we paid $40 more per person and we did not received what we asked. They did not care about this inconvenient and did not offer us any refund as an apology. We do not recommend this structure as they seemed to be cheaters and disorganized."

Centauria Wild Hotels in Moneragala

Centauria Wild

"Centauria Wild is undoubtedly one of the best stays we had whilst in Sri Lanka. In fact, the hospitality we experienced from the staff at the hotel, wonderfully led by Damitha, was probably one of the best of my life (and I’ve visited 35 countries and counting!). From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by front of house and provided with some much needed refreshments after what had been an incredibly long journey from Galle. The view from our room was indescribable, absolutely breathtaking - a panoramic view of the Udawalawe reservoir and the surrounding park. I honestly haven’t seen anything like it and nothing comes close to the feeling of sitting on the balcony and watching the sunset over a view like that. The staff around the hotel are incredibly warm and friendly, always smiling and checking in on how you are, which I thought was lovely. We bumped into Damitha in the evening of our first day and he showed genuine concern for how we’d get home given the Middle East crisis, reflecting how much time and effort he puts into knowing his customers and building true connection with them. I’d booked a safari for my mum’s 65th birthday and had asked that something be organised to commemorate the day. Not only had they beautifully arranged the bed in advance of our arrival, they outdid themselves on her actual birthday in ways beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Damitha went out of his way to make sure that breakfast was still available for us although we arrived back late from the safari and we had the most wonderfully delicious breakfast spread (thank you to the kitchen team too!). Little did we know that this would be followed by a birthday cake celebration that outdid anything I could have expected, not only did they sing happy birthday to my mum as they brought out the elaborate cake on a trolly to some background music with a candle for her to blow out. It all felt incredibly special and showed a level of care and consideration I was truly grateful for. My mum and I were absolutely blown away by the immaculate service we received throughout. The team paid attention to small details like helping us arrange tuktuk drivers when we couldn’t get them on PickMe, giving us suggestions of where to visit and how to get there, taking photos of us to help us remember special moments and we even got a touching note from Damitha as we left. I am so grateful to the team for all their hard work and would go there again in a heartbeat. If you’re looking for a hotel in Udawalawe, look no further than Centauria Wild - their service is second to none, you will be thoroughly cared for and I truly hope to go back there someday. Thank you Damitha and thank you to the CW team (special shoutout to Asanka, Imesha, Poora, Soratha and Chirath)! We’ve got memories to last a lifetime"

Governor's Camp Udawalawe Hotels in Moneragala

Governor's Camp Udawalawe

"My family and I stayed at this charming place in Udawalawe on the banks of the beautiful Kiriibban wewa! The property has 3 chalets ( an extra bed can be added to any one of them ), a dormitory as well as camping facilities. We occupied two chalets, which were spacious enough, tastefully decorated and clean. There is an option of AC or fan. Each chalet has a large outdoor veranda with two “easy chairs” and a table. The manager Dhananjaya and his team of two; Renuka and Herath took good care of us. Dhananjaya was very accommodating and produced a most delicious last minute lunch which we ordered just hours before arrival! Renuka does the Sri Lankan and Dhananjaya does the western food. We were treated to a lovely barbecue for dinner done by him. The food is really very good. The property is situated around 8km from the park entrance. Observing the birds (aquatic and non) and watching the fishermen cast their nets on the lake whilst enjoying an early cup of coffee was rather magical. On the downside; the pathways should be better illuminated. Actually, they were not illuminated at all. The coffee sachets in the rooms are just awful! The old fashioned Nescafé would have been just fine. I would stay here again and of course recommend it to others too."

Lavendish Tamarind Lifestyle Hotels in Moneragala

Lavendish Tamarind Lifestyle

"One of the worst hotels we have ever stayed in. The bathroom was very dirty, and the commode seat was not fixed properly or was broken. The bathroom also had a very bad smell, and when you opened the bathroom door, the smell spread into the room. The towels and pillowcases had many stain marks. We booked a family room with full board, but after lunch, they only offered dessert when we requested it. When I asked about it, they simply said they were very busy and forgot. Our room was for four people, but they had kept amenities only for two. After requesting four times, they finally arranged the items for the other two people. Dinner was good, but the breakfast was really not worth the money. Considering the price they charge, this hotel needs 100% improvement. Not recommended at all."

Yala Safari Camping Hotels in Moneragala

Yala Safari Camping

"The service is very good and the environment is average. It's just a big tent. If you want to stay in hotel facilities, don't stay. There is no hot water, no toiletries, and there will be invasion by flying insects and small geckos. It's an experience of being close to nature."

"The hotel has a beautiful building and setting, rooms are big enough and staff is friendly, but that is about where it stopped for us. Our booking was not made or lost, we luckily got two rooms, took about 30min to get ready, safe was locked, no toilet paper and shower went cold after 2 min. Smaller bed than expected and room looks and feels like it is neglected. Bar only has one red and one white wine and one beer, although the bar menu is about 1 full page of items. On the dinner menu about 30% of the menu was not available. I must say the dishes that was available was very tasty. The whole hotel lacks a vibe, that touch that makes one feel home is just not there and more availability of F&B Proximity to nature reserve is great, but I think one can do a bit better and still be in the same area."

"Stay at this Hotel at your own risk, while accommodation was ok with all the ammenites like safe & wifi connection, clean & serviced thoroughly the food was awful and the resturant staff rude and disinterested in anything remotely resembling service, unless you were Indian. The location was certainly ok and we managed some lovely works outside the Hotel grounds. Pool area was fine but the pool itself was encrusted with dirt about 2ft below the waterline. In all with a good clean and some staff training this could once again be a lovely place to stay. We are surprised at the 4 star rating. In our view this Hotel should rate as three stars."

"A small‑scale hotel in the middle of nature. The rooms are simple, which actually makes them feel original. The air conditioning works very well. The food in the hotel is prepared with local ingredients and tastes great. The manager of the hotel often acts as the guide for both the boat and jeep safaris. He’s a very pleasant person who knows a lot, explains things well, and seems to know every path in the area. The staff is very friendly too. I can highly recommend this place."

"We stayed for one night at the Camp and regret for not booking two nights! We were a bit worried about sleeping in a tent but when we arrived at the camp and were met by Solomon and the lovely staff, all our worries disappeared. We had a super comfy bed and a lovely tent which was slightly old but very clean. We had all we could have wished for a romantic night with lovely three course barbecue dinner and a camp fire! The entire camp felt very secure and we felt that all staff were efficient, professional and friendly. The best part was the romantic atmosphere gazing at the stars, listening in the night, being surrounded by stunning nature, birds and wildlife. The next morning, after a tasty freshly cooked breakfast, Solomon gave us a walking tour of nature surrounding the camp and the gorgeous lake nearby. He is an experienced and personable guide who is very passionate about nature and can spot birds and small animals from 500 meters. His story telling and knowledge about Sri Lanka flora and fauna is very extensive. He showed us native birds and a chameleon that we could not see without the binoculars. We encountered the famous red back woodpecker, the giant squirrels, monitor lizards, wild rabbit and numerous beautiful water birds at the lake. We came across the traces of the elephants who pass around the camp during the night to get to the water in the lake. We learnt so much from Solomon and are so grateful for his informative tour and friendly service. We strongly recommend the Mahoora Tented Safari Camp to those visiting the Udawalawe National Park and would like to express our special thanks to Solomon and the team."
