Mao County (茂县) is located in the northwest of Sichuan Province, at the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau in the southeastern part of the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, and is home to the Qiang people. Famous scenic spots and historical sites in Mao County include Old Qiang Village, Diexi Songpinggou, Jiuding Mountain, the Diexi earthquake site, the Black Tiger Qiang Village and Watchtowers, the Yingpanshan Neolithic Cultural Site, the Baodinggou National Nature Reserve and the Tudi Mountains National Forest Park.
