Free Korean Air Layover Hotel: Eligibility & Booking Guide

Korean Air's headquarters are located at Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN).
Due to the limited number and sometimes unattractive direct flights from the United States to Southeast Asia, South Asia, and even some cities in China, Incheon Airport has become one of the most important transit hubs for routes between the US and Asia.
Korean Air does offer STPC (Stopover by Carrier) service for certain premium cabin classes or long layovers. Read on for more helpful information!

What Do You Get from a Korean Air Layover Hotel?
Typically, if you choose this type of connecting flight, you'll be flying across the Pacific for over 15 hours. It's quite tiring, but Korean Air's free transit accommodations can give you a much-needed respite. Let's see what you get!
1. A hot shower and a deep sleep
You'll have a private, clean, modern bathroom and a standard room. This will rejuvenate you on your flight to your next destination (like Bangkok or Manila).
2. Direct baggage policy
Large luggage will be transported directly to your final destination. This means that when you check into a transit hotel, you only need to bring a lightweight bag containing a change of clothes and toiletries.
3. Fine Dining Subsidy
You will receive a free meal (usually a buffet breakfast or an authentic Korean/Western meal).
4. Free shuttle service
If you are staying at a partner hotel outside Incheon Airport (such as Grand Hyatt), Korean Air or the hotel will provide a completely free airport shuttle bus.
5. Short-haul mini-vacations in Seoul
For longer layovers (e.g., 12-24 hours), Korean Air will cooperate with Incheon Airport to offer free transit tours or make it convenient for travelers to take the Airport Express (AREX) to downtown Seoul.
Who Is Eligible for a Free Transit Hotel with Korean Air?
Here are the core conditions for receiving a free transit hotel with Korean Air:
1. It must be a long-haul flight with no other option
Economy class layovers must be between 9 and 24 hours (this standard is usually relaxed to 6 to 24 hours for first or business class).
If Korean Air has a flight with only a 2-hour layover on the same day, but you choose a flight with a 15-hour layover, Korean Air will consider it a "voluntary stopover" and will not provide a free hotel.
2. The flight class cannot be too low
Extremely low-discount special offers, group tickets, and award tickets redeemed with miles (such as O, X, N, G, T classes) usually do not qualify for free STPC hotels.
3. Terminal connections must be "matched"
Since Korean Air has completely relocated to Terminal 2 (T2) at Incheon Airport, STPC hotel allocations are closely related to arrival/departure terminals:
For arrivals at T2 and subsequent flights also departing from T2, Korean Air typically arranges complimentary accommodation at partner hotels outside the airport (currently primarily the five-star Grand Hyatt Incheon, including shuttle bus transfers for two and breakfast).
How to Book a Free Korean Air Layover Hotel?
You need to book your Korean Air transit hotel (STPC) online in advance.
Step 1: Secure your PNR
You'll need your ticket's booking reference number (PNR/Booking Reference, usually a 6-digit alphanumeric combination) and a 13-digit e-ticket number (Korean Air usually starts with 180).
Step 2: Contact customer service at least 72 hours before departure
Korean Air's official website and mobile app do not have an online button to directly apply for the STPC free hotel. You must apply through traditional human channels:
- Option A: Call Korean Air’s US customer service (
+1-800-438-5000). - Option B: Contact your original booking agent. If you purchased your ticket through Trip.com, you usually need to contact the customer service of your original booking channel, and the agent will submit the STPC order to Korean Air.
Step 3: Receive hotel confirmation voucher
You will receive an STPC Hotel Voucher (transit hotel confirmation/voucher) in your email.
It is recommended that you print out this voucher or save it securely in your mobile wallet/offline files.
Step 4: After landing at Incheon Airport
After clearing customs and passing through the Arrival Hall, proceed to the dedicated Korean Air service counter located on the first floor of Terminal 2 (T2).
Use your voucher to board the complimentary shuttle bus to your transit hotel. Check-in takes approximately 5-10 minutes.
Common Questions from U.S. Travelers
- Visas: US citizens can enter South Korea visa-free for short-term stays and can proceed directly to their hotels outside the airport.
- Internet access: Both the airport and transit hotels offer excellent free Wi-Fi coverage. However, if your layover is longer than 12 hours and you plan to take the subway to downtown Seoul for Korean BBQ or shopping, it is recommended to purchase a Korean eSIM in advance.
