The Shanghai Bund (外滩, Wàitān) is a historic waterfront area located along the Huangpu River in central Shanghai. It developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Shanghai became an international trading port.

Many Western powers established banks, consulates, and trading houses there, leading to the Bund’s famous mix of Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical architecture. Today, the Bund remains one of Shanghai’s most iconic landmarks. The promenade offers views of both the old colonial buildings and the futuristic skyline of Pudong.

If you are boarding after 5 PM, you need to go exchange your tickets after 4:30 PM. Since the ship is large, tickets are usually plentiful every hour unless it is a national holiday or Christmas. Please note that I rode on March 13th. The night view is really beautiful.

The river breeze was cold in early March. It was a bit chilly, but I am satisfied because the scenery on both sides was so beautiful. Since the children are short, they couldn't see from the railing because of the people, so we paid an extra 100 yuan per person to sit and watch from the VIP zone, and it was nice because there were no people.

If you book a local tour, you can only choose 7 or 8 o'clock, but this is great because you can take the next cruise right away! If you're planning to go, I recommend buying from Trip.com.

50 min cruise on the huangpu river. They board hundreds of passengers and a bit of a scramble to find a seat or a space at the top viewing platform, then another scramble to get off. There is one bar area on the second floor and two floors with indoor seating. Views of Shanghai are great, especially at night. It can get a little chilly & windy up top, so a light jacket is recommended. The price is a little expensive for what you get, but it is worth doing at least once.

Insider Tips for Visiting the Bund Shanghai

  • Go early or late: Take stunning pictures for sunrise at the Bund in the early morning. Or visit during the night for dazzling lights of the modern skyline!
  • If it rains: Bring an umbrella or wear a light raincoat — the Bund’s open promenade offers little shelter. Rain can actually make for dramatic photos with reflections on the wet pavement.

  • Stay nearby: Consider staying at a Bund-side hotel like the Peace Hotel or Fairmont for easy access and great views.
  • Watch your belongings: The area is safe but crowded; keep an eye on your bag, especially when taking photos.
  • Explore beyond the riverfront: Wander into nearby streets like Fuzhou Road or Nanjing East Road for delicate cafés, local shops, and Shanghai food.
