We live in the upstairs space as a small family of 4. We do not party or stay up late but during the day you may hear our young daughter from time to time. Just built and furnished in 2023 it can be rented as an entire house or separately as a one bedroom lock out (available off season, September-May). Nested in the center of Avon this brand new home is located in the small community right across the Avon Fishing Pier. Ideal place for a family vacation during summer months and one of the best spots for kiteboarding and surfing in the US year round. Take a short walk to the beach right onto the Pier and consider renting a beach cart if needed. Bask in the Sun and tackle the waves on the wide and sparsely occupied beach, and then find plenty of dining options the township of Avon has to offer. For a house Chef the local Food Lion is well stocked and the modern appliances, including an air fryer, will provide for in-home cooking opportunities should you choose to eat in. A simple gas grill is also provided for your convenience. If you feel like nature watching and/or exploring, the house has direct and full access to the Sound, so bring kayaks ane paddleboards to enjoy, or use our two seater ocean kayak provided! The creek is accessible to small skiffs, jon boats and small center consoles. Also, there are a few local businesses to rent different watercraft from. A short drive up North, in the village of Waves, a few other attractions may provide for a fun-filled day, like Rock climbing, go karts, etc. Avon Fishing Pier has free parking and you can use it to access the beach, fish and sample some good bites at local food trucks.Avid fishermen can choose surfcasting, inlet fishing, ocean fishing at the Pier, sound fishing, or sport fishing offshore for flounder, drum, blues, mackerel, tuna, and more. Many charter boats operate offshore fishing, but advance reservations are recommended.Avon has a bike path--great for exploring, exercising or for easy trips to the stores or restaurants; bring your bikes or rent—delivery usually available.Got a sunburn and need to avoid the beach for a day, or the bad weather is in the forecast? Please clean up and tidy up before you leave.Important: Hatteras island is a sandbar in the ocean and weather events are to be expected here - guests are encouraged to get trip insurance when booking.Folks often ask me why I choose to be on the sound side instead of the ocean. It's a matter of personal preference, of course. But here are my thoughts:Sound vs. Ocean side...Sound side is more serene, relaxed and quiet and you don't feel like you are sharing your vacation with hundreds of other beach goers. Having said that if you want to mix and match you can always cross to the Ocean side - takes 5 min. I am not an early riser, so even though I love sunrises on the ocean side I am not usually up that early to enjoy them, especially when on vacation. This makes the sunset displays off our deck one of the biggest highlights of this location. We are right on top of the water which is an experience in and of itself while the ocean side homes are usually set back from the water quite a bit and the beach is not private.If you have children in your party, depending on how old they are, being on the Sound side can be a great advantage - no violent waves or rip currents to worry about. They can simply walk into the calm water and swim, play and enjoy. You also get the homey feel and a contained space where it is easier to watch the kids as it's just you and your family on the beach. Teenagers may want to do some kayaking, windsurfing, sailing or kiteboarding - all better suited for the sound side. Gradual, even and shallow water entry in front of the property are ideal for these watersports.I also like the fact that you can walk to the local fisherman village, watch the sailboats and the simple life that goes on there - just a different feel, more local, less touristy. It's a matter of preference.If you or your kids/family are into kitesurfing/windsurfing/kayaking/sailing - Sound side is the place to be! Prevailing winds are side-on-shore SW and the water is relatively shallow making it a safer environment for the wind/water sport enthusiasts to enjoy their hobbies. For surfers on the other hand, Oceanside location is certainly the place to be and is less that a mile away. A popular fishing location - Avon peer is also about a mile away.All that said, some folks prefer Oceanside locations and there are certainly plenty of gorgeous spots to choose from! Those are usually quite a bit more expensive though.About Avon:Avon is rustic and relaxed. It is a kiteboarding and windsurfing mecca due to ideal wind and beach conditions.Avon is an old Hatteras Island village that has become synonymous with recreational surf fishing, and the Avon pier is a hot spot for those in pursuit of big gamefish like Red Drum. Just north of Buxton, this once tiny village of watermen and their families has grown to be a highly coveted vacationing experience with pristine, natural beaches and beautiful rental cottages. But Avon still retains its tight knit community feel. Even though you can find fantastic seafood restaurants, a supermarket, and some of the conveniences of home, a rustic atmosphere still permeates Avon.You may hear Avon referred to as Kinnakeet by some locals. It was the name local tribe of Algonkian Indians gave the area, and later adopted by settlers. But in 1883, the U.S. Postal Service redubbed the village Avon, like they did with most of the Hatteras Island communities.On the sound side of Avon, on the western side of Highway 12, you may see kiteboarders performing amazing aerial stunts and windsurfers racing across the surface of the Pamlico Sound. Nearby Kite point and Canadian Hole were named after the popularity of this public access spots with kiteboarders and with our visitors from the north. It reportedly may be the only home on the island like it.While the home has been updated, some of the original features and details remain. All inside walls and ceilings are the original wood beams, In the back bedroom, you will even see the back of a stone fireplace that was at one time a centerpiece of the home. The laundry room was at one time a sauna room. If you look closely outside the home above the main door area, you will still see an exposed beam that has the original stamp from Kokkola, Finland and Bothniahouse.
