"Hotel the Flag exceeded our expectations. The location is convenient and in a nice, happening part of Osaka. Less than 10 mins from the nearest subway and walking distance to Dotonburi. The service from check-in until the time we collected our luggage late the next day was excellent. Staff speak good English and were lovely. Rooms looked new and spotless, there were small but probably slightly bigger than the average size in Japan. Breakfast was simple but really good and a good selection too. There is a water cooler to refill your bottle, and coin laundry/dryer facilities within the hotel. I totally recommend this hotel."

"Used for watching baseball. The roof of the dome was visible from a close distance and it was easy to come and go in about 15 minutes. I arrived before 13:00, but it was good to check in as soon as the cleaning was completed and I was able to relax. The email asking for check-in time arrived the next day instead of the day (because it is via a travel agency), so it is smooth to contact the arrival time in advance."

"The hotel location is great and easy to walk around exploring right in the middle of the city and you will find this gem ramen store open 24/7! The only disappointment was with the butler service or more the non existent butler service. For the price we are paying, I expected much much more from St Regis as I have been accustomed to at other St Regis Hotels. The hotel is beginning to show its age and hence the cleanliness part is coming into question when our rooms were being cleaned, I mean I am again nit picking here but it isn’t up to St Regis usual standards. The gym room is adequate but there isn’t a pool in a 5 star hotel 🙃."

Hotel also provides beverages and snacks during certain timing. Stayed with them 11 years ago and happy I chose them again this time. Thank you!"

"I recently stayed at this minimalist-designed hotel with a strong focus on sustainability. The rooms were small but efficiently designed, making good use of space. The reception area doubled as a bar and breakfast buffet, which was a unique and convenient touch. The breakfast offered a good variety, aligning with the hotel's eco-friendly ethos. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk from the train station, which was manageable and added to the overall experience. Friendly service-focused staff."

Osaka Travel Guide

Osaka

Osaka, Japan's third-largest city, is a vibrant blend of modern energy and traditional charm. Known as the culinary capital of Japan, Osaka is famous for its street food culture, with dishes like takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes) filling the air with irresistible aromas. The city is also home to historical landmarks like Osaka Castle, a stunning symbol of Japan’s feudal past, and lively districts such as Dotonbori, where neon lights and bustling streets create an unforgettable atmosphere. Whether you're enjoying a day of shopping in Umeda or exploring the tranquil Shitenno-ji Temple, Osaka offers a dynamic mix of old and new.

Beyond the city itself, Osaka is a gateway to other must-visit destinations, including the ancient city of Kyoto and the popular Universal Studios Japan theme park. With its thriving entertainment scene, a rich cultural heritage, and some of the best food in the world, Osaka is a city that caters to both adventure seekers and those looking to relax. Known for its friendly locals and laid-back vibe, Osaka offers a warm welcome to visitors from all over the globe. Whether you’re in the mood for delicious food, fascinating history, or exciting attractions, Osaka is a city that promises to delight at every turn.

Getting to and Around Osaka

Getting to and Around Osaka

When flying into Osaka, you'll most likely land at Kansai International Airport (KIX), located about 50 km from the city center. From there, you have several convenient ways to reach downtown Osaka.

The JR Haruka Express is one of the fastest options, taking about 35 minutes to reach Osaka Station for around $12. If you're heading to areas like Namba or Umeda, there are other convenient train routes available as well.

If you prefer a more relaxed ride or are carrying heavy luggage, Airport Limousine Buses are a great option. These buses are comfortable, run frequently, and cost about $10, taking approximately 45-60 minutes to reach major locations in the city.

For a more direct route, taxis are available, but they can be more expensive, typically costing between $100-$140 depending on traffic and the destination.

What part of Osaka is best to stay in?

Best Areas to Stay in Osaka

Dotonbori/Shinsaibashi: If you're a first-time visitor to Osaka, Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi are unmissable. This bustling district is the heart of Osaka’s nightlife and entertainment scene. You’ll find iconic landmarks like the famous Glico Running Man sign, neon-lit streets, and a wide variety of restaurants offering local specialties such as takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes). The area is also perfect for shopping, with Shinsaibashi’s long arcade lined with trendy stores and boutiques. While this area can be busy and touristy, it offers the perfect mix of Osaka’s modern energy and traditional street culture, making it ideal for those looking to experience the city’s lively spirit up close. It's slightly on the pricier side, but you can’t beat the convenience of being so close to all the major attractions.

Umeda (Kita District): For those who prefer a more cosmopolitan vibe, Umeda is Osaka’s business and shopping hub. Home to impressive skyscrapers, upscale shopping malls like Grand Front Osaka, and rooftop gardens with stunning views, Umeda is a great base for those looking to experience Osaka in style. It’s a bit more laid-back compared to the electric energy of Dotonbori but still offers easy access to major attractions like Osaka Castle and Universal Studios Japan (a short train ride away). The area is generally a bit more upscale and less chaotic, but you’ll still find plenty of restaurants, bars, and cultural spots to explore. Umeda is an excellent choice for visitors seeking a balance between modernity and convenience.

Namba: If you want to be in the heart of Osaka’s entertainment district, Namba is the place to be. Just a short walk from Dotonbori, this area is perfect for those who want to be close to everything, from neon lights and street food stalls to chic restaurants and vibrant nightlife. Namba is also home to traditional attractions like the historic Shitenno-ji Temple, as well as the famous Namba Parks shopping complex, which offers both retail therapy and green spaces. This area is perfect for visitors who want a combination of modern amenities and cultural exploration, with everything within easy walking distance. Though it can be a little crowded, staying in Namba means you’re right at the center of Osaka’s action.

HHui Min ThamHotel was conveniently located right next to one of the entrances of Yotsubashi Station (which can easily be used to reach places such as Namba) and was within walking distance of Shinsaibashi as well. There is a small mart located right below the hotel where many necessities (e.g. food, drinks, toiletries) can be gotten. Checking in and out was easy and efficient. The rooms were mostly neat and clean (with a small fridge and shampoo/soap/conditioner provided) albeit on the tinier side. That aside, it more than suffices for travellers.

LLilian Liew See ChinI recently stayed at this hotel in Osaka and, while the property itself is commendable, I had a very disappointing experience with a front desk staff member named Sears. When I politely asked to borrow a pen to sign some paperwork, rather than assisting me in a courteous manner, she reacted with clear irritation, rolling her eyes and displaying a lack of professionalism. This behavior continued when I asked her a few questions, and it was evident that she had no intention of providing the friendly service one would expect from a hotel of this quality. It was disheartening to witness her treating not only myself but also other guests in a similar disrespectful manner during checkin. This experience significantly tarnished an otherwise enjoyable trip. I strongly urge management to address this issue as customer service should reflect the high standards of the hotel. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst front desk experiences I've encountered. I hope future guests do not have to deal with similar treatment.

GGuest UserWe had a really pleasant stay and will probably book this hotel the next time we are in Osaka. Close to the train station and there was a 24-hour convenience store just across a small road. Room was small but relatively alright (although we did request to change to a bigger room 2 nights later - with a fee, of course). Staff were friendly and the check-in/check-out process was seamless. There is a smoking area located on the first floor too. Hotel is lively at night as they have a bar downstairs. Toiletries are complimentary to take yourself at the lobby area. Really loved this hotel.

GGuest UserGreat for families with kids. Times flies as there are too many things to do inside the hotel. Indoor swimming pool, spa, arcade, karaoke, food park… The check in and check out process were self help. Check in time at 3pm. Check out time at 10am. After check out you can stay in the hotel and use the facilities. Good for those who need to hang yout for a little while more before their flight. Walking bare foot in the whole hotel building is a brand new experience for all of us. The swimming pool is only accessible by going through the female and male changing rooms which are on different floors. If a dad has to bring a daughter to the pool they will have to go in separately, which is not optimal.
