What Is a Flight Cancellation Insurance?
In full travel insurance, “flight cancellation coverage” is a benefit that reimburses you if you cancel for reasons like illness and emergencies.
On Trip.com, these are not full insurance policies but add-on protection/guarantee/flexibility services. You pay extra at booking for more lenient cancellation or change rights.
These services differ by region, airline, and fare class. What’s available in the US or EU may differ from Asia.
Type 1: Trip.com Cancellation Guarantee Service
What Is It?
The Cancellation Guarantee is Trip.com’s core refund protection. It allows you to cancel your flight before departure and receive a partial or full refund.
How Does It Work?
You pay a small fee when you book. If you need to cancel, please do it through Trip.com, not directly with the airline.
Trip.com processes your cancellation and refund according to the rules shown when you bought it. You’ll get an email confirming your cancellation and refund amount!

Shanghai Disney Resort

45731 reviewsReasonable prices and fast ticketing! I'll definitely buy tickets here again next time! Had a great time!
The Grand Palace
4.4/5
5833 reviewsA truly beautiful and authentic place. It's unlike anything else, with its own aura and atmosphere. It was my first time in Bangkok, and I decided to start my cultural program with this palace. It was absolutely stunning; I wanted to explore every detail. I really loved it.
Tokyo Tower
4.7/5
2313 reviewsI wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise, but you absolutely have to give this experience a go! I’d recommend visiting in the evening, although I went during the daytime, and it was equally amazing. Unlike the modern and futuristic Tokyo Skytree, this experience lets you soak in the nostalgic charm and spirit of old Tokyo. The atmosphere is completely different! Our host was incredibly energetic and entertaining, almost like a Japanese anime character brought to life! His enthusiasm made the entire experience even more memorable. The photo opportunities on the upper deck were absolutely stunning, with breathtaking views of Tokyo. If you want to feel like a VIP while experiencing Tokyo from a completely different perspective, this is something you simply must try. Definitely one of the highlights of my Tokyo trip!
Type 2: Trip.com Flexible Travel Dates Service
What Is It?
The Flexible Travel Dates service focuses on changing your travel dates rather than canceling your trip. It’s useful if you think your schedule might shift by a few days or weeks, but you’ll still take the same trip.
How Does It Work?
When booking, add on a service called “Flexible Travel Dates”. You can change your flight date later, often without paying airline change fees. But you’ll still pay the fare difference if your new flight costs more.
This option is perfect for business travelers or people with unpredictable schedules.
Category | Details |
What It Covers? | ✅ Free or discounted date changes ✅ Easier rescheduling via Trip.com customer service ✅ Some flexibility if your plans shift slightly |
What’s Not Covered? | ❌ Full cancellations (you’ll still lose part of the fare) ❌ Name or route changes (it’s only for date shifts) ❌ No protection for illness, injury, or emergencies |
Pros | 👍 Great if you just need to move your flight 👍 Often cheaper than buying a fully flexible airline fare 👍 Saves you change fees |
Cons | ⚠️ Doesn’t refund your money if you cancel entirely ⚠️ Fare differences can still cost more ⚠️ Not always available (depends on flights & airlines) |
Type 3: Trip.com Air Flexibility Service
What Is It?
The Air Flexibility Service is Trip.com’s newest add-on. It combines the benefits of both the Cancellation Guarantee and Flexible Travel Dates services.

Tips for Buying Proper Flight Cancellation Insurance on Trip.com
1. Read the terms carefully: Each service has slightly different terms. Don’t just rely on the short description.
2. Cancel only through Trip.com: If you cancel directly with the airline, Trip.com might void your protection.
3. Save screenshots: Keep a copy of the add-on description, confirmation, and receipts. They help if you need to file a claim.
4. Check local refund laws: In the EU and UK, you often get a 14-day cooling-off period for unused protection products.
5. Be patient with refunds: Refunds may take time since Trip.com waits for confirmation from the airline.
6. Compare total cost vs. benefit: Sometimes a flexible airline fare is cheaper than a non-refundable ticket + add-on.
7. Consider full travel insurance: These services cover cancellations only — not medical issues, lost baggage, or trip delays.
Which Flight Cancellation Insurance Should You Choose?
Traveler Type | Best Option |
Uncertain travel plans | Air Flexibility Service |
May need to change dates | Flexible Travel Dates Service |
Need refund protection | Cancellation Guarantee Service |
Booking expensive flights | Consider full travel insurance |
Short, low-cost trip | Cancellation Guarantee or no add-on |
- If your plans are 90% confirmed, a small add-on like Cancellation Guarantee makes sense.
- If your plans are 50/50, Air Flexibility is safer.
- If your schedule might just shift a few days, go for Flexible Travel Dates.
