"One Rude Staff Member Ruined an Otherwise Decent Stay I stayed at Esplanade Zagreb Hotel with high expectations given its historic prestige, but one employee’s unprofessional behavior significantly tarnished my experience. Upon arrival, I mistakenly entered the hotel’s parking area as the parking gate opened. After realizing the error, I proceeded to the lobby, completed check-in, and moved my car to the designated drop-off zone for valet service. At this point, a parking attendant aggressively confronted me—hands on hips, speaking in a condescending tone, and demanding how I’d accessed the area. His demeanor was more suited to scolding a trespasser than addressing a paying guest. To be fair, the front desk and concierge staff were perfectly polite and efficient. Had I not encountered this particular employee, my overall impression would have been positive. But for a hotel branding itself as a luxury establishment, even one hostile interaction is unacceptable. A guest’s entire perception can be undone by a single moment of poor service. The incident casts doubt on the hotel’s training standards. Why does such a disparity in staff attitudes exist? I hope management addresses this, as no amount of century-old tradition excuses rudeness. Until then, I’d hesitate to return or recommend Esplanade Zagreb without caution."

"The hotel was really nice. There is a restaurant right inside the hotel with pizza and drinks. The staff is very nice and helps with everything. The room is cozy and comfortable."

"The location is near a freight train hub, but it didn't bother us. The room was spacious and quite clean. The hotel owners cut corners on the decor: the walls in the hallway and parts of the room, as well as the ceilings, are bare concrete, not even plastered. Now they call it an 'original style' (chuckles). It's inconvenient that the sink is in the room, not in the bathroom. The room has bathrobes and slippers, but no disposable toothbrushes. There's a small electric kettle and a capsule coffee machine, but not even a single bottle of drinking water... Unexpected for a hotel that isn't exactly cheap. When booking, it wasn't mentioned anywhere that the hotel's underground parking costs 12 euros per night, which was also a surprise. Breakfasts are quite substantial, but there wasn't even simple oatmeal... The available food isn't very suitable for someone with gastritis..."

"Located  close to bus station; room slightly  more dated than appears on the booking site; besides that enjoyed staying in the room with big bed and comfortable mattress; nice bathroom/shower; fridge in room: tv with apps loaded incl Youtube and Netflix; only complaints would be no safe in the room and the  bed pillows could be a bit smaller; breakfast offering was varied; hotel appears to be well run with breakfast area being well-managed by staff, engagements with hotel reception were pleasant and efficient and room cleaning was done promptly"

"The bed provided a solid night’s rest and felt properly maintained throughout the stay. The mattress and linens were neat and comfortable, adding to the room’s overall comfort. The space was set up well and easy to settle into. Amenities worked smoothly without any disruption. The overall experience was calm, reliable, and satisfying."

"I only now stay at this hotel when I am in Zagreb. From the moment you walk through the main doors and into the reception area, you are warmly acknowledged and greeted. You are a valued guest and are treated like one. Check in process is smooth and seamless. The room is well-appointed and given the time of the year, cosy and warm. The bed wa super comfortable and the pillows offered enough support to ensure a good nights' sleep. The bathroom was spotless and the heated towel rail was much appreciated. If you are so inclined, the mini bar is stocked and there is also excellent room service. The buffet breakfast is sensational- the best in Zagreb. Something for everyone and for all dietary requirements. The one thing that always impresses me here is the fact that all employees and acknowledge their guests- from the room attendants to the kitchen staff. I will alway come back to the Astoria Zagreb. Thank you for looking after me."

"In need of refurbishment from a cosmetic perspective, as the carpet in my hotel room was worn and tired. No body wash and had to ring housekeeping for refill… perhaps this should be checked regularly with cleaning. Cannot fault the care demonstrated towards guests and breakfast quality. A grand old lady of Zagreb that will always draw me to her. Fantastic location. Highly recommended."

"We arrived earlier than check-in and got our room right away. We had a deluxe king room, which was beautiful and clean. The hotel is well-located, about a 10-15 minute walk from the city center, so everything is easily accessible on foot. The breakfast was very good with lots of choices. The service at this hotel is excellent. Every evening, I'd request an ice bucket, and it would be delivered to the room within 5 minutes. The staff are kind and polite. I highly recommend this place, you won't regret it! 😀"

"The hotel is clean and basic amenities are provided. Reasonable with the price. Since I rely a lot on walking, the location is neither good nor bad. It was 2.5 km from the city center but since it is spring, the walk is really enjoyable."
