"Fabulous stay at this beautiful ryokan. Staff was unfailingly helpful, attentive and kind, even though they spoke little English, and we speak even less Japanese. The meals were amazing and the five onsen were fantastic. Our stay was peaceful and restorative...just what we needed!"

"This was the most pleasant surprise hotel on our trip to Izu! When I booked online, there were no twin rooms available, so I reserved a king-sized room. Upon arrival, I spoke with the front desk, and they graciously switched us to a Japanese-style room for a small additional fee. The decor was lovely, and the breakfast was excellent. The best part was the hotel's seven private onsen baths, available on a first-come, first-served basis. We enjoyed them twice! Highly recommended."

"We stayed for 2 nights and 3 days as a family. We are a Japanese family. The price was reasonable, so we were somewhat prepared for some shortcomings, but personally, we were satisfied. [Good points] - The breakfast was delicious. The lineup was the same, but considering it was 1000 yen per meal, it was acceptable. Overall, the staff's service was good. - We were told it was a smoking room, but we didn't notice any smell. - The indoor bath was free of mold and dirt, and there were no problems. - We stayed in a Japanese-Western style room. There were two beds and a comfortable space to relax, and it felt more spacious than expected. - The evening stroll around the area was fantastic, with the area lit up. [Points of concern] - It was generally dark at night, and the corridor leading to the open-air bath was particularly dim and scary. - While it was good that they accommodated us at the last minute for the dinner buffet, considering the 3500 yen price, our satisfaction level was low. Overall, I was very satisfied with the reasonably priced plan. I also thoroughly enjoyed exploring the surrounding area both day and night. The people I met in the area made a very good impression. I would definitely like to visit the Shuzenji area again. Thank you very much."

"Avoid this hotel. The room was infested with bugs; I even found a rove beetle on the tatami mats. The bedroom, in a fairly large space, had air conditioning; the other rooms didn't. In this weather, I was sweating even after showering, and even using the bathroom was sweating. The worst part was the receptionist at this hotel. She walked ahead to show us to our room. I was carrying two large suitcases with my child (the floor was paved with cobblestones, so I couldn't drag them, I had to carry them), which was incredibly strenuous. She looked back and not only didn't offer to help, she didn't even offer a polite "Can I help you?""

Tofuya Resort & Spa Izu Hotels in Izu City

Tofuya Resort & Spa Izu

"I'd been interested in this inn for a while. The Yoshina River flows through the grounds, which are the size of two Tokyo Domes. There are bridges within the building, as well as two old bridges. In addition to the main and west buildings, the inn is packed with amenities, including a thatched-roof restaurant, a Taisho-era lounge, a bakery, and a riverside terrace! There are five hot spring baths, two of which are private. We arrived by shuttle bus from Shuzenji Station. We first checked in at the entrance building, which has a wonderful atmosphere with its high ceilings, pillars, and beams. From our room, we could see the beautiful Japanese garden. We strolled around while looking at a map of the grounds. Simply strolling the grounds was enjoyable. We went to the open-air bath, which alternates between men and women depending on the time. After enjoying the hot springs and the greenery, we headed to the lounge to quench our thirst. We enjoyed beer and sparkling wine. After enjoying a variety of elaborate dishes, each made with carefully selected ingredients, we took a minibus to a spot where we could see fireflies! This was the best part. From a bridge over the Yoshina River upstream from the inn, we were able to see the fireflies glowing yellow-green in the pitch-black darkness. We returned to the inn and went to the private bath we had reserved. We then went to the "Kodakara no Yu" hot spring, where Oman had taken a cure in hopes of being blessed with children. Before breakfast, we took a walk to Fujimi-daira, a one-hour round trip walk from Oman's garden. We could see Mount Fuji faintly. We had a Western breakfast in the retro atmosphere of the second floor of the Taishokan building. Here too, we were able to spend a luxurious time. After breakfast, we bought some bread and fruit cake as souvenirs at the bakery, and then had a toast to celebrate our wedding anniversary in the lounge! I'm a TV addict, but I had such a fulfilling time here that I didn't have time to watch TV. When you think about it, it's great value for money! This is one of the inns I'd like to return to."

"Incredible stay with a perfect blend of history with modern conveniences. My husband and I absolutely adored this place. This is my eighth trip to the Japan and his fifth and we’ve been lucky to stay in many ryokan. The service at this place was absolutely impeccable, even by Japanese standards. The grounds were lovely beautiful with a suspension bridge and garden surrounding the ryokan. Although there have been multiple expansions to this place, it never felt crowded and I think we only saw a few other guests while we were here, but that may have been due to the time of year. From the time you arrive, there is a warm and welcoming lounge with a wood-burning fireplace that they keep going when anyone is in there. At one point, my husband and I showed up early in the morning and somebody was starting the fire not even a minute later. A cool feature of this place is that they have complementary beer, wine and ice cream in the lounge which guests can access at anytime. We’ve never seen this before and any other ryokan even though sometimes they will stock your fridge with a few free beverages. They have a tour in Japanese that will take you to the different historical highlights of the buildings and surroundings and kindly gave us a print out in English going over the same spots which were noted on a map so we could go look at them ourselves. I really appreciated this. There is a gorgeous private on that you can reserve and they make it very easy to do that as they ask you what time you’d like to reserve when you check in. Even though we had a private on in our room, ( Ukifune) we took advantage and tried it out after running out there in our spa wear. This was a new thing as we have only ever utilized yukatas in these instances. It was a lovely, huge Stone bath and I’m glad we did it. The Ukifune suite was huge and the western futon beds were very comfortable. It was January so we definitely left the heat on in every room while we were there and it could get slightly chilly if you didn’t do that. We loved being cozy in our yukatas after dinner and bath watching Grand Sumo tournament. The kaiseki dinner was served in a private dining room and sometimes these can be a little bit more challenging for me my husband and I ate more at this one. I think then we ever have at any other ryokan dinner. It was very good. They did accommodate our request for no squid or octopus. Note that I generally request Western breakfast for my husband and I don’t believe that they have this available here but I’m not sure. Maybe I just forgot to order it for him this time. lol We never got bored and there is a fun game room downstairs with ping-pong, foosball, and even air hockey. I absolutely love this place and it’s one of my favorite ryokan that I visited. I highly recommend this gorgeous place."

"This special inn is enveloped in such tranquility and beauty that it's as if time has stopped. While the 300-year-old traditional house retains its historical weight, its sophisticated, modern space exudes a sense of wonder not found in other inns. In the evening, the restaurant served up a artistically prepared meal featuring the bounty of Izu's sea and mountains, with each dish filled with surprise and delight. I'll never forget the lights in the bar or the night sky seen from the open-air bath. The warmth and attentiveness of the staff made my stay comfortable throughout, and even though it was my second time staying here, I felt at ease, as if I was being welcomed by old acquaintances. The gelateria and bakery were of high quality, allowing me to spend a relaxing, happy time from the morning onwards. The building, food, and service were all memorable experiences. Next time, I'd like to experience Loquat in a different season and experience a different side of the experience."

"A hot spring hotel with a very good value for money. The rooms are clean and you can see Mount Fuji from the room. There are Chinese-speaking staff at the front desk, the service is friendly, and they also introduced us to the recommended attractions around. The dinner menu looks good, and I can choose the set meal with dinner next time."

"There was a minor issue with the room, but the staff kindly offered to move me to another room, which allowed me to enjoy the rest of my stay comfortably. Unlike many business hotels in large cities, I could not hear noise from the neighboring rooms, so the overall environment was quiet and pleasant. The bathing area was under renovation, so only one bath was available and it was shared by men and women at separate designated times. It was a little disappointing that guests could not use the bath whenever they wished."

"Situated in a beautiful village, the hotel is traditional in style but bills itself as a ryokan. There's a small hot spring, but nothing special. Breakfast is traditional, too. It's a very good value for the money."

"This was my third time staying at this hotel, and the cups used in the room were a little dirty. There were spider webs and dust everywhere. The bathroom was clean. Toner, shampoo, a hair dryer, etc. were all provided, and they were good brands, so I felt relaxed even after getting out of the bath. I couldn't find a surprise birthday card for my child, who I had arrived in advance. It's not a problem if they couldn't prepare one, but I was looking forward to it, so it's a little disappointing."

"I compared many hotels before my trip and spent a long time deliberating. Since I didn't stay at any other hotels, I can't compare, but Guichuan (Hotel) is generally quite good and offers great value for money. The only downside is the lack of a shuttle service to the station. There were a few minor unpleasant incidents during my stay, but they were resolved smoothly. They offer a welcome drink, Yakult and popsicles in the morning, and late-night ramen. Both breakfast and dinner were decent. The hot springs also have free private baths."

"The location is far from Shuzenji Onsen Street. It takes a quarter of an hour to walk with the luggage. Fortunately, the attractions to be seen are within this range. The hotel requires changing into slippers in the lobby, but you can still walk in with your luggage. I don't know how the floor can be kept clean. In addition, the hotel slippers are cold and slippery, and not convenient to wear. What's even more bizarre is that the hotel doesn't clean the rooms. They just put the towels, bath towels and bed sheets that need to be changed at the door for guests to do it themselves. This is the first time I've encountered such a hotel. Bad review. That is the level of a farm stay. The only good thing was that the dinner was great and rich, with a small hot pot and sea crab legs. The service staff seemed to be Indian, very warm and thoughtful. There was no service in the room or the hot spring house. There were no towels in the hot spring house, and the floor was covered with hair and lint, which was very dirty."

"It has some features, but the soundproofing and lightproofing are average. You can hear the sound of rain, and the second-floor bedroom is a little bright at night. I booked two rooms with my family. Unfortunately, there was no hot spring outside the villa, and there was no place to drain the water. Because my family was tired from the flight and there was a communication barrier, we didn't take a bath. Overall, I was a little disappointed."

"Excellent very traditional ryokan, it is situated in a quiet area and is a truly relaxing stay. It has free use of privatized onsens, and excellent cuisine. Amenities are plentiful. The only negative point is the requirement to prebook dinners and breakfast too far ahead, some flexibility would improve the stay and permit no pre bookings for food nearby. Overall excellent nonetheless"
