Great Wall of China

When it comes to the Great Wall of China, Badaling and Mutianyu are the superstars you can't miss! Badaling, just 70km from Beijing, is the most restored section stretching 12km with 43 watchtowers (though only 3.74km and 19 towers are open to visitors). It's known for its more gentle slopes and handrails for an easier climb. Meanwhile, Mutianyu Great Wall offers rare architectural feature of three watchtowers standing side by side. This ancient military stronghold connects to Juyongguan in the west and Gubeikou in the east, with a stretch of wall that winds through dense forest and mountains.

It was crowded but bearable. The changcheng is worth visiting there is no other comments to make. I just want to beware everyone: when returning by train you should enter the station 12 MINUTES before the departure!! If you’re late go straight to the cashier right behind the station entrance and change your ticket for the next train. You should also consider that the staff is very slow and almost rude so be ready. And one more thing: you cannot buy or change the ticket to the train that departs in less than 20 minutes. Every minute counts in Badaling train station. (We’ve been to more that 10 cities during this trip and this kinda rule was only in Badaling and I guess Beijing).

Top Great Wall Hiking Routes and What to Expect

Walking the entire Great Wall—over 21,000 kilometers—is a massive challenge that only a few could dream of tackling. Most visitors stick to shorter hikes on well-known parts like Mutianyu, Badaling, or Jinshanling, which usually take between 2 and 4 hours to explore. If you’re up for something more intense, routes like Jiankou to Mutianyu or Jinshanling to Simatai can take 5 to 8 hours, depending on how fast you move.

Having spent plenty of time hiking different stretches (and dealing with my fair share of sore feet!), I can say each section has its personality. Some are perfect for stunning photos with panoramic mountain views, others offer peace away from the crowds, and a few still feel wild and untouched, like stepping back in time. Below are my favorite spots that truly capture the magic of the Wall.

Great Wall of China Travel Guide - Who constructed China's Great Wall?

Great Wall of China Travel Guide -When Was the Great Wall of China Built: in Which Year - Easy Tour China

Early Origins and Qin Dynasty Unification

The Great Wall was constructed over centuries by a number of Chinese dynasties, starting as early as the 7th century B.C. Emperor Qin Shi Huang constructed the most well-known section during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), uniting the pre-existing wall to stave off northern invaders.

The wall was later enlarged by the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–220 A.D.), and the most famous and well-preserved section was constructed by the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) utilizing bricks, stones, and more sophisticated engineering methods. As a result, the Great Wall was a gigantic, protracted endeavor by several kings to defend China against northern military threats and nomadic tribes. It was not constructed by a single individual or dynasty.

Great Wall of China Travel Guide - The Great Wall of China's History

How the Great Wall Began

The Great Wall of China resembles an enormous, more than 2,000-year-old fortification! To keep their competitors out during the Warring States era, many kingdoms began constructing it in chunks rather than all at once. Emperor Qin Shi Huang then decided to unite China in 221 BCE by tying together those disparate fortifications into a single, enormous wall.

Particularly during the Ming Dynasty, when builders employed bricks and stones to strengthen the wall, it grew longer and stronger with time. It's critical to understand that the Great Wall is actually a collection of walls and watchtowers constructed over many centuries rather than a single, uninterrupted wall.

The Great Wall Through the Dynasties

The Wall was enlarged and reconstructed over time, particularly during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), employing more durable materials like stone and brick. This period produced many of the areas that are visible today close to Beijing. It's crucial to keep in mind that the Great Wall is actually a collection of interconnected walls, towers, and fortresses constructed in various locations and eras rather than a single, continuous structure.
