Which is Better in Japan? eSIM,SIM card or Wi-Fi routers?

SIM cards offer the convenience of no need to worry about charging like Wi-Fi routers, and they take up very little space in your luggage. There are plenty of plans to choose from, but they do come with drawbacks such as a complex setup process and the requirement for a SIM-free smartphone.

Wi-Fi routers are easy to set up once you arrive and can be shared with multiple people or devices. However, they can require extra charging and the hassle of managing and handing over the device. eSIM, on the other hand, doesn't need a physical card, so there's no risk of loss or damage. The setup is relatively simple, but it’s only available on compatible smartphones.

Below is a table that compares the features and considerations of the three options.

FeatureWarning
eSIMNo risk of loss or damage; No need to carry around; Easy to set up; Can be used upon arrivalPhone number may not be used; Limited number of smartphones can be used
SIM cardNot bulky; Many purchase plans availableNeed pin to swap cards
Wi-Fi routerCan be used immediately upon arrival; Can be shared by many people; Can be connected to many devicesCan be troublesome to carry around; Difficult in receiving and delivering

Conclusion

eSIM offers unmatched convenience and flexibility for travelers with compatible phones, making it a top choice for tech enthusiasts or those seeking a hassle-free setup without the need to swap SIM cards.
SIM cards are a budget-friendly option for short trips, suitable for those who don’t mind physically replacing their SIM and managing limited data plans.
Wi-Fi routers are ideal for families, groups, or heavy data users who need to connect multiple devices. However, they come with the added cost and inconvenience of carrying an extra device.

You can choose the most suitable option based on your real needs.

The hotel is magnificent, with the luxury of the last century. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped. After staying, you will feel the attentive service everywhere. Problems are dealing quickly and efficiently. If you sit near the window in the restaurant on the 17th floor, you can enjoy the view of Hibiya Park and the garden of Imperial Palace. Ginza is also within easy walking distance and Takarazuka Theatre is nearby. When you need a taxi, there is always one waiting to serve you. If you need to buy gifts, the underground level has everything.

Just a short 3minutes walk to train station. Great view of the bay and the room was big and spacious which is rare for a typical Japan hotel. Amenities were great as expected of an Intercontinental hotel. However, do note that there is nothing much nearby. But it is not too far from Tsukiji and Ginza which are easily accessible by train.

The location was great for families with kids, lots of activities and attractions near by. Breakfast was good and friendly service. However, a bit hard to find family-friendly restaurants near by at night, they're mostly 18+ bars. Bedroom was very nice, however the bathrooms are a bit dated and needs and upgrade to match the rest of the room. The hotel had a pool but charged a ridiculous amount per person just to use it, I'm a frequent traveller, but this is the first time I've ever experienced being charged to use the pool, so that was a let down. Overall decent stay though.

Checked in after 9pm, lounge closed so couldn’t check in at the executive lounge. The male reception staff checking us in was not as welcoming as expected for this hotel, perhaps limited English speaking so sounded cold, no smile at all. The reception lady led us to check in was more friendly. Location is everything and the view from the balcony is awesome. Breakfast is better than average. Overall not too shabby.

I recently stayed at the Hotel Gracery Ginza in Tokyo and had a delightful experience. I booked two rooms: a double and a triple. While the double room was indeed very small, this was the only drawback of an otherwise excellent stay. The rooms were reasonably clean and well-maintained. The hotel offers a cosy lounge in the lobby where guests can enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and juice, which was a lovely touch. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with any queries or needs. Best of all, the hotel provides ice, warm and cold water, and vending machines on every floor, adding to the convenience and comfort of the stay. The location of the hotel is fantastic, being very well connected with many different train lines. All the train stations are within walking distance, making it incredibly convenient to explore Tokyo. Situated right in the middle of Ginza, the hotel is surrounded by a plethora of shopping options, from luxury brands to popular street brands and local favourites like Uniqlo, GU, and Muji. Don Don Donki, a popular store, is open until 4am, which is perfect for late-night shopping. Additionally, on weekends, the main road in Ginza is closed to vehicles, allowing pedestrians to enjoy a leisurely stroll. Overall, despite the small size of the double room, I highly recommend Hotel Gracery Ginza for its excellent location, friendly staff, and comfortable amenities. It made our stay in Tokyo truly enjoyable.

Ginza/Tsukiji Tokyo|0.49km from city center
The location was unbeatable, offering breathtaking views of the city skyline, especially at night. The rooms were modern and impeccably clean, with all the amenities you would expect from a high-end hotel. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful, going above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay. However, the only area that could use some improvement was the in-room Wi-Fi. While it worked, the connection was not as reliable as I would have liked. This minor issue aside, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Tokyo—it’s truly an exceptional place to stay, and I look forward to returning!

The room was clean but a bit on the smaller side, and some of the hotel facilities, like the shower head, seemed a bit outdated and weren't the most comfortable. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Prince Hotel. The staff was attentive and friendly, always responding promptly. Honestly, if you're looking for a hotel with a great view of Tokyo Tower, this would be a fantastic option. However, if the view isn’t a priority, you might want to explore other hotels within the same price range.

Hotel is very near to Tokyo Station but room is small which is typical of a Japanese hotel room. Unable to open 2 luggages at the same time. 3rd and 4th levels are women's levels where men are forbidden. Laundry rooms, complimentary coffee machines, vending machines, and water dispensers are available at different levels. This hotel allows selection of extra pillow and also provides toiletries, green tea and even moisturising masks and supplements, all at 1st level. The wow factor is a complimentary self help bar at restaurant from 4 to 9pm where different wines, liquors, sake and soft drinks are available together with nuts. Staffs are all very friendly and helpful and most are well versed in English. All in all, it's a great hotel.

Great Service Service is great. The hotel is located in a business district, so it's not so lively at night albeit it is close to Rippongi which is the the party place, and it's also easy to get to Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ginza, among others. the location is very good, near the subway station. Staff were all extremely accommodating, amicable and make it simple for the check in and check out process. Meals were good - generally great. The subway or JR staff at the counter are able to communicate in English. The Green color suica card can be bought from the ticketing machine except the red color suica card for tourist (28days usage) only can be bought at airport. Odaiba Tokyo|5.01km from city center
My stay at Hilton was great! Overall I’d give it a 3/5 though. As amazing as the staff was, I was a bit disappointed with how they had extra charges for services and amenities. To use the pool there was an extra charge for each time. Luckily I was already a Hilton Honours member but if I wasn’t I’d have to pay for wifi as well. Just with the above 2 it’s a bit lame in the sense that they are pretty standard services. Like even train stations provide free wifi so it should be included in the charge. And for the spa it’s understandable if there’s a charge but for the pool ? Kinda a bummer. Anyways that’s the only negatives. For the pros, the location is just THE BEST!! You want to go anywhere, the station nearby is can take you to mainline stations within minutes. Odaiba itself is also pretty great itself with 2 big malls, many photogenic spots and the Gundam statue within 5 minute walk of the hotel. Staff is also exceptionally friendly and courteous. There’s heaps of restaurants within the hotel itself that have fine dining. Room was also pretty big and I had requested 2 twin beds and they made it happen. Overall for a 5 star hotel, the room could have been a bit fancier but it still sufficed. Would recommend a stay for sure!

Aman Tokyo sets a new standard for exceptional hard products. Despite a mishap on our first night when we returned from dinner to find our room uncleaned, the front desk manager promptly apologized and offered complimentary drinks. The head of housekeeping also personally apologized at breakfast and showered us with thoughtful gestures like a fruit platter and free laundry. Subsequently, our stay was faultless. Aman Tokyo also boasts stunning design and architecture and a strategic location near Otemachi station, Tokyo station, the Imperial Palace, and Ginza. Its awe-inspiring atrium leaves a lasting impression. The generously sized rooms, starting at 70 square meters, feature high ceilings throughout, with unforgettable views of the imperial gardens from the bed. Even the retractable TV showcases its thoughtful design, providing guests with an unobstructed view of the Tokyo skyline. The hotel's farewell was equally remarkable. Providing a complimentary hotel car transfer to Tokyo station, while being escorted by another staff member who went the extra mile to purchase our tickets, carry our luggage to the platform, store our luggage on the train and brought us to our seats. Undoubtedly, this luxury at Aman Tokyo comes at a price. However, delivers the sought-after wow factor for which its rates command. After all, Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world. From the grand lobby to the inviting pool and spacious rooms, the hotel impresses on many levels. Managing expectations is, however, key. It would be unrealistic to expect the usual Aman-type of service commonly associated with their other properties whose room counts are a lot smaller. While the initial mishap was regrettable, the subsequent personalized attention and meticulous service surpassed expectations for a city hotel with 80 rooms. Whether this was due to the initial mishap or reflective of their usual standards remains unknown, warranting another stay on my next visit to Tokyo.

Stayed here for about 10 days in 2019 and loved every single day I was there and missed it every day since I left. The staff was top-notch from the day we arrived to the day we left. Complenimentary snacks, wonderful onsen, beautiful rooms, sake tasting and mini events in the hotel throughout the day, also a konbini right outside, access to the metro under the hotel so you don't even need to step outside.
