Donki Shopping Tips for American Travelers

A Donki run at 11 PM can look very different from one at 7 AM, major tourist branches may have 45 minute tax-free lines late at night, while early mornings can be much quieter. 

A few timing, payment, and tax-free tricks can save you both time and your suitcase space.

• Payment: Major cards including Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Discover are accepted, along with JPY cash and popular IC cards such as Suica, Pasmo, and ICOCA.
• Store Hours: Many major city branches operate 24/7, but hours vary by location, so check your specific store before visiting. 
• Shopping Bags: Plastic bags generally cost ¥3 to ¥5, a reusable store bought Donki canvas bag is usually a better option.
• Keep Your Receipts: Keep your receipts and tax-free purchase records until you leave Japan.
• Tax-Free Eligibility: US visitors entering Japan as Temporary Visitors can generally qualify for tax-free shopping if they meet the requirements.
• Minimum Spend: A ¥5,000 tax-excluded minimum spend at the same store on the same calendar day.
• Tax Change: For purchases through October 31, 2026, eligible visitors receive the current tax-free treatment at the store. For purchases made on or after November 1, 2026, Japan will switch to a refund system requiring customs confirmation when leaving the country.
• Keep Tax-Free Goods Sealed: Food, drinks, skincare, and other consumables may be placed in sealed bags as tax-free purchases are intended to leave with you in a sealed state. You must not open or use them in Japan, or you may lose the tax exemption on them. From November 1, 2026, the special consumables packaging requirement will be abolished under the new refund method. Travelers will still need to take the goods out of Japan to receive the refund.
• Beat the Crowds: Major tourist branches can have 45 min tax-free queues between 8 PM and midnight, visit from 6 to 9 AM for a quieter & faster visit.
