Where Is Hong Kong on a World Map?

Where is Hong Kong on a map?

You can see from the map above that Hong Kong is on the southern coast of China and quite far away from the United States (~7455 miles/~11999 km). But you can easily get here by air, about 13-15 hours.

Also, you’ve definitely heard of Shenzhen, a fast-developing city in China and the world. And yes, Hong Kong is very close to Shenzhen (within Guangdong Province). You can get there quickly by high-speed rail in about 14 minutes! (~$7 one-way ticket)

Queue was orderly and organised whilst waiting for the tram to head to the peak. Just scan qr code given by trip.com at turnstiles. Although only a short 10 minute ride, the views headed up were stunning and best seated on right side of tram to see the city down below. If this is missed, fret not as the views at the peak itself is breathtaking and many pics can be taken then. There are trails, viewing points and shopping activities at the peak. Public bus service is available if one purchases a single way tram ticket. Journey via bus downhill is pleasant and takes about 40 minutes.

There weren't many people on the morning of the holiday, so I had to share a cable car with others. The scenery along the way was beautiful, allowing me to wander around, see the Buddha statue and temples. We left around noon. My friend and I were able to ride a cable car by ourselves, which was very convenient for taking photos. 📸️👍🏼

We went with our 6-year-old. Overall, we liked it. It's a combination of an oceanarium, a zoo, and rides. The oceanarium is pretty good. There's also an oceanarium upstairs with rays and sharks. As for the rides, there's one roller coaster, two carousels, and a water ride for a 6-year-old. They didn't let my child on the go-karts, which he really loves; he was tall enough, but he has to be at least 8 years old. Then the officer at the entrance changed, and we told him our child was 8. He measured our height and let us in with Dad. We went up on the cable car. The views from the cable car were amazing. We went down on the train. The train wasn't impressive; we thought it was above ground, but it was underground, like the subway. Overall, we had a great day there.

Now you might have an idea where to go in Hong Kong. Then, how to get there? Well, the Massive Transit Railway system (MTR) is the fastest and most popular way to get around for both locals and travelers.

You may notice that there are so many lines on the map in various colors. That tricks the first-timers a lot. Remember that your tourist Octopus Card can work for all lines. Check this MTR map before you hang out in Hong Kong. Wishing you a pleasant journey.

Tips for Using the Hong Kong Map

Congratulations! You’ve come to the last part of this guide. Hong Kong is a busy city to hang around, but with high-rises, rich food culture, and many other artsy vibes. You’re welcome to this lively metropolis anytime!

Here are some tips for you when handling the Hong Kong Map for different demands.

  • MTR exits can be far apart. So, check the recommended exit number before you go.
  • To avoid crossing a busy road, try to walk through underground tunnels, which is also fun to do.
  • Better press the “STOP” button when taking a bus to avoid the driver skipping the stop directly.
  • Use the HK Outdoor Trail App if you are into hiking, which is more accurate for mountain trails.
  • Download offline maps (like Google Maps) in case of a poor signal.

China Entry Requirements & Things to Prepare

  • 24/240 China Visa-Free Transit: US citizens can stay up to 240 hours in 54 Chinese cities without a China visa when transiting.
  • China Plug & Power: China plug uses Type A/C/F (220V). Bring a Type A/C adapter (US plugs sometimes work, but bring a universal adapter for safety).
  • Internet Access in China: You need a China VPN for Google/Ins/YT/X, etc. But you can also use China eSIM with built-in access to overseas apps!

Getting Around & Top Destinations in China

Must-Have Apps in China

  • China Map App: I love to use Gaode Map (English supported) or Baidu Map (limited English) for real-time transit and traffic. Or you can still use Google Maps in China, but some data may be outdated.
  • China Transport App: Use DiDi (China's Uber) for English address input and cashless payment. I recommend to use the DiDi mini-program in Alipay for more convenience.
  • China Payment App: Use Alipay or WeChat Pay (link foreign cards before arrival).
  • China Booking App: Trip.com for high-speed trains (China HSR Guide), China hotels/flights. Use Trip.com promo codes for USA users.
