"This accommodation is very popular during peak season. Many reviews mention staying in the basement or using different entrances, which is due to its location in typical British terraced houses. This means multiple houses are connected, each with its own main entrance, featuring ground floor rooms and rooms on floors 1-4. If your room type specifies a balcony, you'll be on the best floor, the second floor. Other floors don't have balconies, and relatively speaking, the windows on the fourth floor are lower than those on the first to third floors. Some reviews mention a 'basement,' which in the UK refers to the ground floor, often with a sunken patio facing the street for natural light. Of course, the lighting is much poorer than on the upper floors.
The pros and cons of this accommodation are very clear. Each room has a kitchen and a private bathroom. The kitchen is well-equipped with utensils and crockery, clean, and includes two refrigerators, an oven, a microwave, and a four-burner induction cooktop. Pots, pans, cutting boards, knives, and dish soap are provided. There's a medium-sized shopping center just a 3-minute walk away, featuring a large Waitrose, H&B health store, Boots, an Amorino ice cream shop (the lemon sorbet is excellent), and a Chinese supermarket.
While the furniture and facilities in the room aren't new, they are very clean. We even stayed in a 'basement' room, and apart from the lack of natural light, we didn't experience any dampness or other issues. Rooms are cleaned every five days, but most guests leave before the cleaning takes place. If you run out of essentials like toilet paper or trash bags in between, you can ask the front desk.
The hotel is a convenient 5-8 minute walk from St Pancras and King's Cross train and underground stations, making it easy to travel to Gatwick Airport or north to York and Edinburgh by train. Bus access isn't as convenient, requiring a 5-8 minute walk to find a bus stop. On Uber, the location is good. The British Museum, Selfridges, and Westminster are also not too far away. Between the hotel and the shopping center is a street filled with restaurants, and a slightly longer walk will bring you to Italian and Chinese cuisine. Overall, the location is very good.
There's a safe in the room. Luggage storage is free for overnight stays, both before check-in and after check-out. The downside is that there's no designated luggage room; bags are piled up at the front desk and in the stairwell in front of it. Although staff mentioned surveillance and a 24-hour front desk, the luggage tags seemed to be merely for show. During our week-long stay, however, we didn't hear of any guests losing their luggage.
The advantages are very clear, especially when considering the price. It's almost the cheapest, cleanest accommodation with a private bathroom in this area. However, those who are sensitive about service attitudes should reconsider. We stayed here for almost a week and didn't receive a single smile from the front desk staff from check-in onwards; it seemed to be a universal attitude. On one occasion, they were joking among themselves, but their faces immediately soured when a guest approached. Of course, they treated everyone the same, so there's no need to suspect discrimination. There was a subtle atmosphere in the air: 'You're not successful, staying in such a cheap place, and we're not successful, doing this job, so let's not judge each other.' Every time I interacted with them during my stay and saw their demeanor, I found it somewhat amusing; it was just another anecdote of the trip."
