"Our Hakone trip's biggest surprise was definitely staying at the Ashinoko Hanaori ryokan. The entire experience was fantastic, far exceeding our expectations. I especially want to highlight the rooms, the food, and the private onsen! The rooms were surprisingly spacious, a clever blend of Japanese and Western styles. Even with family, it never felt cramped. The furnishings were exquisite and tidy, and all amenities were well-provided. Sitting by the window, gazing at the beautiful Ashi Lake scenery, was incredibly relaxing. The food was another huge plus for the ryokan. The buffet breakfast and dinner offered a wide variety, featuring fresh local ingredients. There were both characteristic Japanese dishes and delicate desserts, all with a refined and authentic taste. If you book in advance, you can even dine with a lake view, making it a feast for both the eyes and the palate. But the private onsen was the absolute highlight – amazing value for money and incredibly private. The bathwater was warm and soothing, and soaking in it completely relaxed my body, washing away all travel fatigue. Taking a dip in the private onsen at night, accompanied by the tranquil night sky and a gentle breeze, created an utterly immersive and therapeutic atmosphere. The ryokan's convenient location was the icing on the cake. It's directly opposite the Togendai transport hub, making travel incredibly easy. Whether you're heading to Ashi Lake for the pirate ship, or taking the ropeway and buses to various attractions, you don't need to go out of your way – the boarding points are within walking distance, saving a lot of hassle. What was especially convenient was that our plan for the next day was to travel from Hakone to Mount Fuji. We could take a direct bus from Togendai to Gotemba; the schedule was convenient, the journey smooth, and there was no need for extra transfers, which significantly saved travel time and made our trip more worry-free and efficient. The ryokan's service was also very thoughtful. The overall experience was excellent, suitable for both family trips and romantic getaways. It's definitely our top choice for accommodation in Hakone, and we'll certainly stay here again next time!"

"The hotel has a beautiful environment, especially the Japanese garden 🏡 which is incredibly picturesque. Even though it's winter, the plum blossoms and cherry blossoms 🌸 in the courtyard are already in bloom, making for a pleasant stroll. There are also many cultural relics. The guest rooms are a bit dated, and the facilities are just average."

"Our experience staying in Hakone was perfect! We stayed at the Tensein in Hakone-Yumoto, an easy location to take the bus, car or train to some popular tourist attractions in the area. The check in itself was rather slow but the staff do their best to speak good English and discuss every detail about your stay with you. The room had everything we needed, the shampoo and conditioners provided was wonderful and there was a variety of products to use. On check in, the private onsen was given at 50% discount at 1,100 Japanese yen per use, we got 2 vouchers so used it 2 times (as we have tattoos we could not go into the public onsen). On check in you have to collect your towel and your choice of Yukata (traditional Japanese robe) which you’re welcomed and encouraged to wear around the hotel and gardens. The hotel is strictly no shoes, so upon arrival you leave your shoes in a locked box and keep the key. If you wish to walk around the beautiful gardens, there are slider type shoes available to slip on, as well as umbrellas to use if it’s raining. Outside they have a onsen for your feet to enjoy with a drink. All of the food and drink (apart from breakfast which was included) was put on our bill at the end. There was a wide selection of drinks, nibbles and food available for dinner and lunches at the dining room and there was a large buffet dining room for buffet breakfast and dinner (if you booked it). The hotel is just a short 10 minute walk to the town and 15 minute walk to the Hakone-Yumoto station. Visiting Mt Fuji is easy, with a bus ‘H’ running from stand 2 opposite the Hakone -Yumoto station. Get off at ‘Motohakone’. From there, you can take another bus and a train to get you to another town ‘Gora’ and surrounding attractions to enjoy."

"This place is worth visiting when the price is right. Make sure to set aside enough time for a good soak in both hot springs. The hot spring views are fantastic! The dinner buffet was very rich and varied, but I was in a rush at breakfast so I don't really remember it. Overall, it was a great experience, and they even provide yukatas, which adds a nice touch."

"Great value for money! The room was a bit old, but the public areas were lovely and had a nice Japanese drama vibe. It was pouring rain the day I went, and having the outdoor public bath all to myself while it was coming down was amazing. It's very close to the station, just a few minutes' walk, and the path is easy to navigate. I honestly expected it to be terrible for the price, as I arrived late in Hakone and had to leave early the next day, so I just wanted a bed to sleep in. But it totally exceeded my expectations. It's not luxurious, but perfectly adequate for a stay."

"A traditional hot spring hotel! I was initially worried that the rooms would be old and smelly due to the hotel's long history, but they were actually clean and tidy. Breakfast and dinner were served in the room! The only drawback was the lack of a private hot spring bath in the room!"

"The hotel adopts strict check-in and check-out policies. We stayed for an extra hour for late check-out and we paid 2000 Yen. The hotel restaurant opens at 7am and breakfast session ends at 9:30am and their check-out time is at 10am. There seems to be too little time for the guests to pack up their bags after breakfast. I was a bit disappointed by those two policies. It’s a bit dusty along the rim of door. Also, I was disappointed by not being able to see the view of Mount Fuji from the window of our room (which is a bit small in general) but I paid US$230 for the night."
