Best Time & Tips to See Giant Pandas in Chengdu

For many international visitors, seeing giant pandas is the primary motivation for landing in Chengdu. But choosing the right time to see pandas is quite tricky. Here's what you can do to maximize your panda trip in Chengdu.

  • Seasonal Behavior: Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for watching pandas climb and play in outdoor enclosure trees. In summer, keepers often move adults into air-conditioned indoor dens by midday to beat the heat, though summer is also when visitors might catch glimpses of pink newborn cubs in the nursery incubators. Winter brings out the highest energy levels, as the bears' thick fur makes them exceptionally playful in low temperatures.
  • The Daily Golden Hour: Aim to arrive at the gates right when they open—typically around 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM—and head straight to the enclosures between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM. This is breakfast time, when pandas are fed their bamboo and are most active before retreating for their lengthy midday naps.
  • Choosing Your Base: The city-adjacent Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is easily accessible via metro, making it ideal for a quick morning trip. However, if you are traveling during the warmer summer months, consider making the journey to the Dujiangyan Panda Base, which sits at a slightly higher elevation and offers a cooler, more forested mountain environment.

Everything was fine, except the weather was too hot, and most of the pandas were already asleep by 10 pm. It would be better if the sightseeing bus had more stops or was closer to the exhibition hall, as the walking time was too long.

Beautiful views and a pleasant fatigue! I love to walk and observe a lot, even when it requires significant physical effort. My tips: 1. Don't neglect the bus at the beginning of the route to the entrance. You'll still need your strength, and in hot weather it will certainly be difficult. 2. Start the route from the cable car. This will save you a significant portion of the climb up the stairs. You'll mostly be descending. 3. Stop often, rest, and soak in the surrounding beauty and nature.

Booked this hotel for a company training, and it's super convenient – right by Chunxi Road, and the subway exit is practically at the hotel entrance. The front desk manager was amazing, I wish I knew her name! I'd booked a 399 RMB room, but they upgraded me to a deluxe executive king room, probably because they were short on standard rooms. The room itself was fantastic after I checked in! And the breakfast selection was incredible! Seriously, so many choices it was dizzying and overwhelming in the best way possible. Full marks! Highly recommend! Plus, you get a beautiful night view! It was stunning!

The room was specially upgraded, and the service was excellent as requested. Although it's a bit old, the room facilities are well-maintained and very practical. The breakfast was great, offering excellent value for money. The service attitude was truly superb and professional, which is hard to find in Chengdu. The location is good, convenient for getting anywhere. The airport shuttle is nearby, and it's easy to shop and dine. The carpet shows its age, and there's a slight odor in the hallway, but the room was well-ventilated and acceptable. The corridor has a nostalgic 90s feel. Overall, the price is fair. Many foreigners stay here. If you prefer smart, new hotels, this place might not be for you.

Excellent five-star hotel in a convenient location. The room was spacious, clean, comfortable, and offered a beautiful city view. All staff members were consistently kind, polite, and helpful. Special thanks to the receptionist (whose name I unfortunately can't recall): she helped us purchase theater tickets and found us great seats at a good price. The pool was lovely, large, and well-equipped with showers and a sauna. The robots that deliver food were also very cute, though we didn't have the chance to use them. My only suggestion concerns breakfast – a wider selection for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet would be great. Overall, a very pleasant stay and a hotel we highly recommend.

My stay at the Ritz-Carlton was a delightful surprise. When housekeeping tidied the room, they thoughtfully placed my teddy bear next to the pillow. This small, playful gesture really showed how much care they put into their service. The staff who delivered items and set up the extra bed were always very polite. I particularly appreciated how they covered the wheels of the extra bed with a towel – a small detail that not only hid the unsightly wheels but also made me feel the bed was cleaner. Staff members also bid farewell politely when leaving the room, and the room itself was always spotless and tidy. Furthermore, the concierge service was excellent, like Harvey today. All these little things, though seemingly minor, highlight the well-trained staff and create a warm, comfortable experience through their attention to detail. It truly reinforces the idea that ”a five-star hotel isn't just about top-notch facilities – even if they're not the newest as time goes by, proper maintenance makes them comfortable. More importantly, it's about the service, a detailed experience you feel at every moment of your stay.” I will definitely choose the Ritz-Carlton again on my next visit to Chengdu. Just a small suggestion: the air freshener scent on the ground floor lobby and the 25th floor was a bit too strong. It was quite pungent immediately after stepping out of the elevator.

Our family trip to Sichuan concluded at The St. Regis Chengdu, and looking back, it was an excellent choice! The bathroom was spacious, and both the shower and bathtub were incredibly comfortable. The toiletries had a lovely herbal scent, and I particularly loved the soap. We also got to witness the saber champagne opening, which was a fantastic touch of St. Regis' signature ritual! As someone who works out, I really appreciated how well-maintained the gym and pool were. They weren't crowded at all; sometimes we even had them to ourselves. The hotel's location is near IFS and Taikoo Li, but not right next to it. It's a pleasant 10-15 minute walk through old Chengdu streets, which I found charming. This distance was perfect – close enough to attractions but away from the hustle and bustle. Getting to popular sights like Du Fu Thatched Cottage and Wuhou Shrine by taxi was quick and inexpensive, costing only 10-15 RMB. One evening, craving a late-night snack, we walked about ten minutes down an alley right below the hotel and found a fantastic barbecue spot – absolutely delicious! We skipped the hotel breakfast and instead explored some old noodle shops, which turned out to be surprisingly good. These were all the little pleasant surprises we experienced at The St. Regis, and the room service was also quite good. We'll definitely be back!

Back in 2021, I stayed at the Xinliang Grand Hotel in Chengdu and had a fantastic experience. The hotel was clean and tidy, and its excellent location made getting around incredibly convenient. The front desk staff were particularly warm and welcoming. This time, when my daughter visited Chengdu, I booked the same hotel for her, and her stay was just as great. Some areas, like the carpets and air conditioning vents, could use a bit of improvement. Breakfast is incredibly rich and varied, which explains why many foreigners choose to stay here – it's great value for money. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. Ms. Chen Liqiao, in particular, went above and beyond by adding me on WeChat and proactively and patiently providing travel and dining recommendations. Her service was truly heartwarming. A bit dated, but the service is still good. It has German-style amenities. The Executive Lounge afternoon tea buffet is simple but sufficient; the view isn't spectacular but it's better than nothing. The Executive Lounge happy hour snack buffet is also simple but sufficient, and could even serve as dinner. I saw several red wines and specialty dishes like pork knuckle with sauerkraut.

This veteran five-star hotel offers excellent value for money in any city. Its prime location provides stunning night views of the Jinjiang River, allowing you to experience the bustling yet serene atmosphere of old Chengdu's Jiuyanqiao. It fulfilled all my expectations for a family travel hotel: the family room has a separate single bed, which is great value for money now that my child is older; the room was impeccably clean, well soundproofed, and the bed was very comfortable; the butler was always responsive, and the self-service laundry was a lifesaver for washing clothes after days of rain and hotpot. The location is excellent, right by Chunxi Road and next to Taikoo Li, making it very convenient for getting around. The lobby has cute little bunnies, which is a nice touch. The room facilities are in good condition, and the decor is quite new. The shampoo and conditioner are better than what you'd typically find in hotels of this class. I really appreciate that the shower has hooks. The air conditioning is strong, and the water pressure is great, perfect for a refreshing shower. The room's decor is actually more refined than the lobby's; it would be even better if the lobby's design were more cohesive. Also, it would be nice if the flower colors in the lobby matched the overall environment. The butler service is very attentive and provides a lot of useful information in advance, which helps with using the in-room facilities.
