Best Time & Tips to See Giant Pandas in Chengdu

For many international visitors, seeing giant pandas is the primary motivation for landing in Chengdu. But choosing the right time to see pandas is quite tricky. Here's what you can do to maximize your panda trip in Chengdu.

  • Seasonal Behavior: Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for watching pandas climb and play in outdoor enclosure trees. In summer, keepers often move adults into air-conditioned indoor dens by midday to beat the heat, though summer is also when visitors might catch glimpses of pink newborn cubs in the nursery incubators. Winter brings out the highest energy levels, as the bears' thick fur makes them exceptionally playful in low temperatures.
  • The Daily Golden Hour: Aim to arrive at the gates right when they open—typically around 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM—and head straight to the enclosures between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM. This is breakfast time, when pandas are fed their bamboo and are most active before retreating for their lengthy midday naps.
  • Choosing Your Base: The city-adjacent Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is easily accessible via metro, making it ideal for a quick morning trip. However, if you are traveling during the warmer summer months, consider making the journey to the Dujiangyan Panda Base, which sits at a slightly higher elevation and offers a cooler, more forested mountain environment.

Booked this hotel for a company training, and it's super convenient – right by Chunxi Road, and the subway exit is practically at the hotel entrance. The front desk manager was amazing, I wish I knew her name! I'd booked a 399 RMB room, but they upgraded me to a deluxe executive king room, probably because they were short on standard rooms. The room itself was fantastic after I checked in! And the breakfast selection was incredible! Seriously, so many choices it was dizzying and overwhelming in the best way possible. Full marks! Highly recommend! Plus, you get a beautiful night view! It was stunning!

A very satisfying stay! We brought our child from Chongqing to Chengdu to see the giant pandas. Xiao Qin at the front desk and Xiao Yi from housekeeping were incredibly warm and attentive. When checking in, the front desk gave us direct bus tickets to the Panda Breeding Research Base, which was super convenient. The next morning at 8:30 AM, there was a bus right outside the hotel that took us directly there. Given the recent heatwave warning, they thoughtfully provided extra water, showing concern for our well-being. Due to our itinerary, on the third morning, we took our child to the Chengdu Museum, and afterwards, we planned to take them to Guanghan to see the Sanxingdui site. They proactively asked if we needed a late check-out or wanted to extend our stay, which really took the stress out of worrying about check-out times. The free panda bus tickets were a nice touch. The hotel's location is excellent, very close to Wangfujing Mall, Chunxi Road, IFC, and Taikoo Li. Highly recommend! It will definitely be my first choice for future stays! I didn't take many photos, so I can only piece together what I have. The second picture is the hotel's second-floor afternoon tea and breakfast restaurant.

Hotel was in a relatively good location. Within walking distance there are malls and food stalls. Opposite hotel was the Sichuan opera theatre. Recommended to watch at least once. Hotel is able to get the tickets at cheaper rates. For the two bedroom suite, it is suitable for family of 5 with 1 child inclusive. There is one master bedroom which is directly linked to the toilet with a bathtub. Other room and second toilet is separated. Kitchen is fully equipped with cutlery etc. detergent is also provided for the washer. Refrigerator has normal and freezer compartment. Balcony is locked but you can sign an indemnity form to open it. Slippers provided are of good quality and house keeping is good. Only downside is the different little issues for different room we stayed in like hot water tap not working. hotel is connected to a mall, the HK cafe there is recommended. Food is good. Also the bakery sells really good chocolate bun. You can find it right after u enter the mall through hotel lobby. The best thing of course was Tina, who always served with a smiling face and takes the initiative to add you on WeChat to cater to your queries whenever you need. she was also the one who helped to provide breakfast for our child whose breakfast was not included. The other lady who served us on the first night told us we had to pay. It was a very nice gesture from Tina. look for Tina if u stay here, she will be a great help. For the breakfast,it is not the most fanciful but sufficient. Food changes daily but some food type stays the same. They have a paper where you can order noodles, egg omelette, pancakes and waffles. It will be served to you directly so thats a nice touch. They even provide disposable cups for the coffee machine with lids so that you can bring it out if you are in hurry or needed more drink. On weekday and weekend breakfast, the crowd was just nice unlike some hotels where it feels overwhelming and overcrowded due to the huge influx of tourists and there is no need to worry about food running out. Only downside for us is we can’t differentiate the type of meat. We don’t eat beef but it doesn’t state on the labels so we had to ask each time we wanted to take meat or dishes with meat. It is easy to call for DIDI (their taxis) from the hotel. If you have 4 pax or less, hotel can call for you but more than that, you have to arrange yourself. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a comfortable stay. Definitely you can’t compare the price to a cheaper hotel. You are paying for quality over here.

This was my first time in Chengdu, and I chose the Ritz-Carlton as my initial stop. I didn't want to run around, just wanted to relax at the hotel, so I booked an executive room. After my stay, all I can say is it was absolutely worth every penny! Everyone should go for the executive room! The lounge food is incredibly delicious. For lunch and dinner, there are two different main courses every day, along with many hot dishes and exceptionally tasty small cakes! In the evening, there's also a period for cocktails, and all drinks are free-flowing. It wasn't crowded at all, so I even got to try making my own cocktails for the first time. A big thank you to Ms. Eara Li for her patient guidance and active cooperation – she was truly wonderful, and the cocktails she helped me make were fantastic! Breakfast maintained the usual high standard of the Ritz-Carlton, with a wide variety and many Sichuan specialty breakfast items. There were also plenty of seats, so no waiting even during peak hours. Overall, the hotel opened a while ago, so the decor might feel a bit dated, but I would definitely come back for the service alone!

The hotel lobby is quite small. When checking in, we were greeted with a champagne welcome ceremony, and the lobby manager was very enthusiastic. The 'Panda Family Room' we booked was essentially a regular king room with an extra bed. The bedding in the room had panda elements, and the children's toiletries also featured panda branding. If you're just looking for an extra bed for an older child, a king room with an added bed might be more suitable. Overall, the service wasn't particularly special. When I asked if they had any laundry soap or detergent to clean my accidentally dirtied shoes, the answer was no. The check-out process was noticeably less enthusiastic than check-in, though they did offer two bottles of water for the road. Regarding the Florence Village package and similar offerings, these were never proactively introduced from check-in to check-out. The breakfast selection was rich, but during peak hours, you had to go to the bar next door, which was across the hallway and inconvenient. On the first day, we received a very cute panda mousse, which was the only five-star highlight. On the second day, there was none, nor was there any fruit.

The hotel is located near the IFS building and can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes. There are plenty of food options around the hotel, including street food, local restaurants, and shopping malls with food courts. The hotel staff were friendly and service-minded. Although communication was mainly through a translation app, they were helpful and willing to assist. The room was clean and free of any cigarette smell. However, the bathroom had a musty odor, and there was a bag or covering placed over a drain pipe, although I was not sure of its purpose. This could be improved to enhance the overall guest experience.

It saves a lot of time and hassle when getting around. The rooms are spotless and tidy, with attention paid to every detail, and the bedding is soft and comfortable, ensuring a peaceful night's sleep. The front desk staff are efficient and quick with check-ins, offering thoughtful and attentive service, and they even provided helpful tips for exploring the local area. The buffet breakfast offers a wide variety of choices, including local Sichuan snacks, as well as Chinese and Western dishes. Additionally, there's a free laundry room and parking. If you get a good room, you can see the IFS climbing panda right outside your window. The hotel is located right on Chunxi Road Pedestrian Street, and it's only about 100 meters from the subway station – super convenient! We arrived at 11 PM, and unfortunately, our room had a leaky shower seal, so water spilled out. Since I was with my elderly parents and child, and the staff confirmed they couldn't fix it right away, the hotel promptly upgraded us to a better room for one night. The hotel breakfast was a highlight, and the Chunxi Balcony design outside was very exquisite. Even my Canadian-born Chinese (CBC) son said he was satisfied 👍. At checkout, the front desk gentleman, Hua Shao, even gave him some chilled sweet shrimp. It was my son's first time back in China seeing such a bustling night view, and he was so impressed by how friendly the people in Chengdu are. Thank you!

The hotel boasts an excellent location, directly across from the beautiful Jinjiang River and the Anshun Bridge-Hejiang Pavilion. It's also very close to Taikoo Li. Stepping into the hotel from the scorching heat outside, we were met with cool comfort and that familiar, pleasant scent. Our river-view room offered an unobstructed view of the stunning scenery outside. The room itself was clean, comfortable, spacious, and bright, and we were even treated to welcome fruits and local snacks – truly wonderful! Although the hotel is a bit older, the service and maintenance are still top-notch. The dinner buffet even includes hot pot, and guests get a discount. The food was delicious, with à la carte options, roast duck, and local specialties like Qiaojiao beef. There was a great selection of drinks, including white and red wines, and refreshing ice cream. The restaurant staff were attentive and friendly – definitely worth a visit! Breakfast was also excellent. The furniture had clean, modern lines. It had a light luxury feel that instantly put me in a good mood! What was even more satisfying was the service. As soon as you stepped into the lobby, you could feel that the service was different from other hotels. Two elderly gentlemen were present in the lobby every day, greeting guests, serving tea and water, carrying luggage, and answering questions. It gave you a sense of security and trust! The restaurant is on the top floor, a circular restaurant with an excellent view, and the food is also very good! The location is also incredibly convenient; it's very close to all of Chengdu's attractions. Although it's in the city center, it's very quiet. The price is also quite reasonable. We consider ourselves old Chengdu locals, even though we later left Chengdu for Beijing. But every year, we return to Chengdu for various reasons. This time, we made sure to book 15 days at the Jinjiang Hotel well in advance, and the service from this long-standing five-star hotel truly warmed our hearts, giving us a genuine feeling of being at home. I must commend the following staff members. First, Ms. Feng Ling from the Zizhu Restaurant. My partner and I both enjoy a cup of coffee every morning. After observing us for two days, as soon as we walked into the restaurant, without even having to ask, two coffees were already placed at our table, and she knew exactly what kind of coffee we preferred. This feeling of 'being remembered' is, as we say in Chengdu, 'simply amazing,' even more invigorating than the coffee itself. Additionally, Ms. Lu Jia and Ms. Lin Sha also provided excellent service. My birthday happened to fall during our stay, and I hadn't expected anything. However, in the afternoon, Mr. Zhang Yongjian from the hotel called to say they had prepared a birthday cake 🎂 for me. Ms. Kang Jiali, the guest relations specialist, personally delivered a beautiful birthday cake 🎂 to me and offered her well wishes. I was truly touched at that moment. I also want to thank Ms. Zeng Changqiong from the 8th-floor housekeeping, who provided us with warm and thoughtful service every day. On a side note, for friends who enjoy photography, this is a great spot to visit. You can have afternoon tea, take some photos – it's very photogenic. The dandan noodles and egg-baked cake at breakfast are also quite distinctive. Half a month's time, 15 days of companionship. Thank you to every staff member for their smiling faces 😄. The carpet was obviously tilted and appear as eyesore to me. The lift can be access by anyone without the room card to any floor. The hotel lied to me it is only access ible by guest on the particular floor. Location wise, it is not ideal enough if you are expecting real close to subway. Better look for other hotel. The surrounding environment is very quiet and not noisy at all. Xiaoyuan at the front desk service is warm and efficient, check-in and check-out are very fast, and there are questions and inquiries patiently answering, which makes people feel very comfortable. The room is clean and tidy, the wireless 🛜 is very high-speed; the TV is also very clear; then the bedding is soft and comfortable, and the sleep is particularly practical. The facilities are complete, the quality of toiletries is good, the bathroom is separated from wet and dry, and the details are in place. The overall decoration is simple and atmospheric, with good lighting and ventilation, and the living is warm and comfortable.
