U.S. Passport Renewal: When, How, and How Fast

Most adults renew their passports online or by mail (Form DS-82). The current processing times are: Routine 4-6 weeks; Expedited 2-3 weeks (plus mailing time). For urgent travel in ≤14 days (or a foreign visa in ≤28 days), book a passport agency appointment. Still confused? Don't worry! Let us help you and get your passport renewed in no-time!

Passport Renewal Basics (Who Can Renew vs. Apply in Person)

You can renew if your last U.S. passport:

• Was issued at ages 16+
• Is undamaged
• Was issued within the last 15 years
• Shows the same name (or a document proving a change of name)

Eligible adults use form DS-82 (online or by mail). If you don't meet these requirements, apply in person with form DS-11 (first-timers, kids<16, damaged/lost passports, passports issued >15 years ago).

Passport Renewal Validity Rules & When to Renew (Avoid Trip Disruptions)

• Adults: Passport validity is for 10 years; as for children: 5 years.
• Many destinations require ≥3 months validity beyond your trip. U.S. guidance often recommends a validity of 6 months to avoid issues. If you're inside the range of 9 months, find a time to get your passport renewed.
• Out of pages? Since 2016, applicants can't add pages anymore. Therefore, when you're renewing, select the 52-page "large book" with no extra application fee.
