What's the Weather like in Guizhou?

Spring (March – May): Blooming Fields & Refreshing Drizzles

Spring in Guizhou

Spring in Guizhou is a beautiful yet unpredictable season

  • 🌡 Temperature: 10°C – 23°C (50°F – 73°F)
  • 🌧 Weather: Mild with rising humidity and occasional rain showers.

Guizhou shakes off the winter chill as cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers paint the countryside in pastel hues. However, light rain showers are common, and mornings can still be quite cool—so layering is key.

👕 What to Wear

Pack a light jacket, long-sleeved shirts, and an umbrella or light raincoat. If you're planning to explore the nature trails, sturdy waterproof shoes are an absolute must!

🌸 Best Experiences

  • Embark on a hike through Fanjing Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site where misty peaks and rare wildlife await.
  • Stroll through Kaili’s stunning terraced fields, where local Miao villages come alive with vibrant, traditional spring celebrations.
  • Explore the breathtaking Huangguoshu Waterfall as the spring snowmelt from the mountains brings its majestic flow to life.

🎎 Events & Festivals

  • Sister’s Meal Festival (April, Kaili): Experience one of the most iconic Miao ethnic festivals, a vibrant celebration featuring stunning traditional costumes, intricate silver jewelry, and grand, festive banquets.

Summer (June – August): A Cool Escape with Lush Greenery

Summer in Guizhou

Guizhou is one of the best places to escape the summer heat in China

  • 🌡 Temperature: 20°C – 28°C (68°F – 82°F)
  • 🌧 Weather: Warm and humid with heavy rainfall (June and July are the wettest months)

Even in the height of summer in Guizhou, temperatures rarely exceed 82°F (28°C), making it much cooler than cities like Beijing or Guangzhou.

However, expect frequent rain, especially in June and July when the monsoon season is at its peak. If you love dramatic, misty landscapes, this is the perfect time to visit!

👕 What to Wear

Pack breathable favorites like T-shirts and lightweight pants, but always keep a rain jacket or umbrella handy. Waterproof shoes are a smart move, as sudden showers can make streets and trails a bit slippery!

🍃 Best Experiences

  • Explore Libo’s Xiaoqikong Scenic Area, where emerald-green waters and ancient stone bridges create a dreamlike atmosphere.
  • Explore Zhijin Cave, one of China’s most spectacular karst wonders, and enjoy a refreshing escape deep underground!

🎭 Events & Festivals

  • Torch Festival (July or August, Yi Ethnic Group): A vibrant celebration featuring roaring bonfires, energetic dragon dances, and captivating traditional performances.
  • Guizhou Ethnic Culture Festival (dates vary, Kaili & Anshun): Immerse yourself in the vibrant traditions of the Miao, Dong, and Buyi people! This festival is a wonderful way to experience captivating cultural performances and discover unique local handicrafts.

The scenery is beautiful, but the weather is too hot. Also, there's no turning back, so be prepared for a long hike. Some sections are downhill and quite strenuous. If you're traveling with elderly people or children, you should carefully consider that it will take about 4 hours to complete the hike.

Booking online was easy. QR code provided can scan to allow family to enter. This attraction doesn’t really need a guide. Can appreciate the nature on your own with only one way in and out. Be prepared for a long walk with much climbing up/down of stairs with wet and sometimes slippery floor.

The ticket is easy to exchange at the customer service counter. The scenery is breath-taking and the climb to many steps is more than worth it.Though there are many people, the whole place is very well organised. I will go again if there's opportunity

Winter (December – February): Tranquil & Ethereal Landscapes

Winter in Guizhou

Winter in Guizhou

  • 🌡 Temperature: 2°C – 12°C (36°F – 54°F)
  • ❄️ Weather: Mild yet misty, with occasional frost dusting the mountain peaks.

Guizhou’s winters are relatively mild, but the high humidity makes it feel a bit chillier than the numbers suggest. Unlike northern China, snowfall is rare, though the karst mountains are sometimes dusted with a light frost, creating a mystical winter wonderland.

👕 What to Wear

Pack a warm coat, a cozy sweater, and gloves for those higher elevations. The humidity can make the cold feel a bit more biting, so dressing in layers is the key to staying comfortable!

❄️ Best Experiences

  • Visit Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, where traditional wooden houses are nestled within misty winter landscapes.
  • Soak in the hot springs of Guiyang—the perfect way to escape the winter chill!
  • Discover the serene beauty of Wanfenglin (Ten Thousand Peaks Forest), where the unique karst formations look stunning under the soft winter light.

🔥 Events & Festivals

  • Dong New Year (December, Zhaoxing Dong Village): Experience a one-of-a-kind cultural celebration filled with festive feasts, lively music, and the soul-stirring beauty of traditional singing.
  • Chinese New Year (January/February): While they may be less crowded than the big cities, local villages offer a wonderfully authentic way to experience traditional festivities.

⚠️ Important Timing Tips

  • The "Golden Weeks": Avoid May 1–5 (Labor Day) and October 1–7 (National Day). These are "Super Peak" periods where crowds are overwhelming and prices for hotels like the Ten66 Residences or local hostels can double.
  • The Summer Rush: July and August are busy because Guizhou is a "natural air conditioner"—it stays much cooler (22°C–26°C) than the rest of China.
  • Winter Perk: While it's the off-peak season, visiting during Chinese New Year (late Jan to Feb) is the best time to see authentic Miao and Dong festivals, though transport will be harder to book.

Tips for Planning Your Trip to Guizhou

A traveler in Guizhou

  • Set up essential apps before arriving: Many services in China rely on mobile apps. Download and set up WeChat and Alipay in advance so you can pay for taxis, food, and tickets easily.
  • Prepare for limited English: Outside the capital Guiyang, English is not widely spoken. Use a translation app like Google Translate and consider downloading the Chinese language pack for offline use.
  • Plan transportation carefully: Distances in Guizhou’s mountainous terrain can make travel slow. Use high-speed trains when possible and expect longer travel times when visiting scenic spots such as Huangguoshu Waterfall.
  • Bring cash as a backup: Mobile payments dominate in China, but international cards may not work everywhere. Carry some Chinese yuan for small towns and markets.
  • Pack for rain and hiking: Guizhou’s scenery involves waterfalls, rice terraces, and villages in the hills, and the weather can change quickly. Waterproof shoes and a light rain jacket are very useful.
