China Popular Holidays
China Holiday -New Year's Day
2026 Holiday dates：January 1 to January 3
The New Year's Day is not a traditional lunar holiday, but since it follows the Gregorian calendar, many city malls still put up New Year decorations and roll out seasonal sales to mark the occasion.
China Holiday -Spring Festival
2026 Holiday dates：February 16 to February 23.
The Spring Festival is China’s most important traditional festival. Common customs include putting up Spring Festival couplets, hanging red lanterns, setting off firecrackers and fireworks, gathering for a big New Year’s Eve dinner, visiting relatives, giving out “lucky money,” and traveling home to reunite with family.
China Holiday -Qingming Festival
2026 Holiday dates：April 4 to April 6
Traditional customs include visiting and cleaning ancestral tombs—pulling weeds, offering flowers, and burning paper money—along with enjoying spring outings, swinging, and flying kites.
China Holiday - Labor Day
2026 Holiday dates：May 1 to May 5
Labor Day is an official public holiday, but in recent years it’s become more about travel and leisure. Many people take advantage of the break to go on trips or spend time with family.
China Holiday -Dragon Boat Festival
2026 Holiday dates：June 19 to June 21
The Dragon Boat Festival honors the ancient poet Qu Yuan. Traditional activities include dragon boat races, eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), hanging mugwort or calamus, wearing scented sachets, and—in older customs—drinking realgar wine.
China Holiday -Mid-Autumn Festival
2026 Holiday dates：September 25 to September 27
The Mid-Autumn Festival is all about family reunions. People celebrate by admiring the full moon, sharing mooncakes, setting out seasonal fruits, gathering with loved ones, and taking an evening walk to enjoy the night sky.
China Holiday -National Day
2026 Holiday dates：October 1st to October 7th
Typical activities during China’s National Day holiday include watching the flag-raising ceremony or military events in Beijing, taking trips during the “Golden Week,” enjoying shopping promotions, and spending time outdoors with family.

China Holiday Travel Tips & Cultural Awareness
Traveling in China like a pro takes a bit more than just booking flights and hotels. A little local knowledge can turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.
Cultural Etiquette: Understanding Local Customs
- When toasting, gently tap your glass below the elder’s as a sign of respect.
- Never stick chopsticks vertically into a bowl of rice—it resembles burning incense.
- Dress appropriately, speak softly, and avoid touching religious items.
Health, Safety, and Travel
- China is generally safe, but it pays to be prepared.
- Travel insurance: Essential—make sure it covers medical assistance.
- Vaccinations: Routine travel vaccines are recommended; check with your doctor.
Getting Around
- High-speed rail: Fast, comfortable, and often better than flying for medium-distance trips. Book tickets in advance.
- Taxis and ride-hailing: Use Didi Chuxing (China’s version of Uber). Write your destination in Chinese to show the driver.
Packing List
Essentials for any season: Comfortable walking shoes, a power bank, a universal travel adapter (China uses Type A, C, and I plugs), and tissues or hand sanitizer, as some public restrooms may not provide them.
China Entry Requirements & Things to Prepare
- 24/240 China Visa-Free Transit: US citizens can enjoy a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit when traveling through 24 Chinese provinces, provided they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region.
- China Plug & Power: China plug uses Type A/C/F (220V). Bring a Type A/C adapter (US plugs sometimes work, but bring a universal adapter for safety).
- Internet Access in China: You need a China VPN for Google/Ins/YT/X, etc. But you can also use a China eSIM with built-in access to overseas apps!

Must-Have Apps in China
- China Map App: I love to use Gaode Map (English supported) or Baidu Map (limited English) for real-time transit and traffic. Or you can still use Google Maps in China, but some data may be outdated.
- China Transport App: Use DiDi (China's Uber) for English address input and cashless payment. I recommend using the DiDi mini-program in Alipay for more convenience.
- China Payment App: Use Alipay or WeChat Pay (link foreign cards before arrival).
- China Booking App: Trip.com for high-speed trains (China HSR Guide), China hotels/flights. Use Trip.com promo codes for USA users.
