Traveling between Hong Kong and Macau is easy and exciting—Hong Kong offers a modern, fast-paced city vibe, while Macau mixes Portuguese heritage with dazzling resorts.
Knowing the main transfer methods, like ferries, buses, and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, helps you move smoothly between the two cities, save time, and enjoy more of what each destination has to offer.
Golden Bus
Since the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge opened, taking the bridge’s shuttle bus (Golden Bus) to Macau has become a popular way to travel from Hong Kong to Macau. The Golden Bus runs from the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge to its Macau Port, and the ride takes just 35 minutes—making it the fastest way to reach Macau.
To reach the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge from neighborhoods across Hong Kong, you can hop on airport bus routes that terminate at the Hong Kong Port, or transfer at Hong Kong International Airport to a bus bound for the bridge’s Hong Kong Port. From the Macau Port of the bridge, take a loop bus into Macau’s city center—it’s about a 20-minute ride.
High-Speed Ferry
Hopping on a high-speed ferry is another convenient way to go back and forth between Hong Kong and Macau—the journey takes just 50–60 minutes from the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan.

Macau Taxis
Macau Taxi
Most taxis in Macau are black with white roofs. The starting fare is MOP 21, with an additional MOP 2 for every 220 meters traveled. If the ride stops to wait mid-journey, there’s an extra MOP 2 for every 55 seconds.
Placing a suitcase in the trunk costs an additional MOP 3. Red or blue radio taxis are also available; they require advance booking and charge an extra MOP 5. Some areas apply surcharges—ask the driver before you set off.
1. Base fare and fare calculation method
- Starting fare (first 1,600 meters): The starting fare for Macau taxis is MOP 21, which covers the first 1,600 meters of the ride.
- Extra charge every 220 meters: After the first 1,600 meters, taxis will add MOP 2 based on distance, with each 220 meters counted as one billing unit.
2. Fees for parking while waiting for passengers
- If a taxi stops to wait or encounters traffic congestion during the ride (such as at traffic lights, traffic jams, etc.), the meter will add MOP 2 for every 55 seconds. This means that if the driver needs to wait for a long time, the fare will increase accordingly.
3. Baggage Surcharge
- Trunk luggage fee: If you need to place your luggage in the taxi’s trunk, an additional MOP 3 will be charged per piece of luggage. This usually applies to larger suitcases or items like strollers.
Chartered Car Service
If you’re traveling to Macau with family or friends, chartering a private car for sightseeing is a flexible, time-saving way to explore.
There’s no need to worry about public transportation schedules—you can head out whenever it fits your itinerary. It’s especially ideal for travelers with lots of luggage or those who want a deeper, more immersive tour.
