Is Guangzhou Foreign Friendly?

I visited Guangzhou once before starting university. My first impression of Guangzhou was its diversity. There were many foreign tourists and businesspeople. The only downside was the hot weather.

For those wanting to continue to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, comfortable, fast high-speed rail is readily available. I will talk more about whether learning Cantonese is necessary, available outdoor activities, visa requirements, and payment methods.

It is generally warm and humid all year round in Guangzhou, but this also means plenty of sunshine and no frost or snow. Summer (late May to early September) is long, with more than five months of temperatures often exceeding 36 °C (96 °F). In addition, the summer months receive abundant rainfall as well as occasional typhoons and thunderstorms. The coolest months are December to February, but even then, the temperature stays around 20°C (68°F) and 10°C (50°F) at night. While the temperature in Spring is comparatively pleasant, late February to mid May in Guangzhou is the rainy season with many wet and cloudy days. Despite this, April and May are peak tourist periods for the city. This is mainly due to the May 1-3 Labor Day National Holiday when the entire nation is on the move, as well as the all-important annual China Import and Export Fair that is held in April and May.That leaves Fall, considered the best season to visit Guangzhou. With dry, sunny days that are pleasantly cool, the short period between late-October to mid-December is also another peak tourist time. During this time, hotels are usually packed and can be difficult to reserve rooms.

Many people say Guangzhou is extremely hot, but it actually has brief periods of milder weather even in winter. Generally speaking, Guangzhou's climate is subtropical monsoon, warm and humid year-round.

  • July and August are the hottest months, with average daily temperatures around 35°C.
  • November to April of the following year is the most pleasant time of year, with average daily lows around 12°C.
  • June to September is the season with the highest humidity and concentrated rainy season. It's recommended to avoid this time. Of course, if you prefer fewer crowds or have the budget, you can consider visiting.

Guangzhou's climate is very similar to that of the southeastern United States, such as Orlando and Houston. If you can adapt to Florida summers, then Guangzhou will definitely be no problem for you!

How's the Working Environment in Guangzhou for Foreigners?

Guangzhou is an international city in China. It's most famous for the Canton Fair. It's one of the largest commercial centers in southern China, focusing on foreign trade, cross-border e-commerce, and manufacturing.

You can find jobs in education, management, trade, and related fields. Guangzhou has always been relatively open to immigrants, and it's a region with frequent trade exchanges. Salaries here are also among the highest, second only to Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen.

Do I Have to Learn Mandarin or Cantonese?

Learning Mandarin is actually enough! It's the common language in mainland China, and it's the primary language for most public services in Guangzhou, such as schools, government offices, the subway, and hospitals.

If you're interested in Cantonese culture, you can learn it after you've mastered Mandarin. It's never too late! This will help you better understand Guangzhou's local culture, including its tea restaurants and time-honored establishments.

Guangzhou Outdoor Activities

Don't worry, although Guangzhou is an international city, it also has many places connected to nature. If you enjoy hiking or rock climbing, you won't feel like you have nowhere to go.

Guangzhou Rock Climbing Recommendations

  • Guangzhou University Climbing Gym: Professional facilities. Please check opening days in advance.
  • Qingtian Climbing (South Railway Station): Large venue with air conditioning and showers indoors.

Guangzhou Hiking Route Recommendations

Liupian Mountain

Liupian Mountain

The newly opened 40km forest trail in March 2026 is your top choice.

  • 2.5km Route: Dongping Fire Station Loop. Mainly asphalt and stone slab paths, it includes a visit to Phoenix Mountain Tianchi. Suitable for those seeking relaxation.
  • 7.5km Route: From Laowu to Liupian Mountain. The route has many intersections and good scenery. Suitable for those seeking moderate exercise.
  • 10km Route: From Modao South Street to Liupian Mountain. Mostly original forest trails with significant elevation changes. Suitable for those seeking a challenge.

✔️ You can take Metro Line 14 to Baiyun Dongping Station, Exit B, to reach the starting point of the leisure route. For the other two routes, I suggest you take a taxi or drive. It takes about 30-50 minutes from the city center.
