Tokyo Metro

The city's main subway system has 9 lines in total, covering popular tourist routes such as

  • Ginza Line (orange) passes through Shibuya – Ueno – Asakusa

  • Chiyoda Line (light green) passes through Harajuku – Omotesando – Otemachi
  • The Fukutoshin Line (brown) passes through Shinjuku – Shibuya – Ikebukuro

💡 Pro tip: If you use the Tokyo Metro often, I recommend downloading the Tokyo Metro App to easily check schedules and transfers.

Toei Subway

Operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, there are 4 main lines, which are:

  • The Asakusa Line connects Haneda Airport and Tokyo Skytree
  • The Oedo Line, a deep underground loop that circles the city, passing through Roppongi and Shinjuku.
  • The Shinjuku Line runs right through the heart of the Shinjuku business district.
  • The Mita Line connects Otemachi – Meguro – the southern residential districts

The Toei system connects with the Tokyo Metro at several points, such as Otemachi, Shinjuku, and Akasaka-Mitsuke, making it super easy to continue your journey seamlessly!

Steps for Riding the Tokyo Metro

If it's your first time taking the subway in Tokyo, don't worry at all! The system here is very clear and tourist-friendly. Just follow the simple steps below, and you'll be traveling around like a local in no time.

1. Confirm the subway entrance

The Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway logos

Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway logos (Source: nicethings.space)

  • Every station has a Tokyo Metro or Toei Subway logo at the entrance.
  • If there's only one logo, it means that station only serves lines from that specific company.
  • If you see two logos, it means the station is shared by both Metro and Toei.

2. Find the train line you need

Signpost

Directional sign (Source: fun-japan)

  • Once you're inside the station, keep an eye out for the overhead signs that clearly display the "color" and "line code," such as G (Ginza Line) or M (Marunouchi Line).
  • Most signs are in both Japanese and English, making them easy to read—no need to worry about getting lost!
  • Follow the arrows to the platform for the line you want to take.

3. Check the platform and train direction

  • On the platform, you'll find an illuminated sign displaying the final destination of the next train.
  • Make sure the train you're about to board is heading in the direction you want, such as “Shibuya direction” or “Asakusa direction.”
  • Always stand in an orderly line and wait for passengers to get off before boarding.

💡 Pro tip: If you're not sure which side of the platform to board from, check the route map on the wall or use the Tokyo Metro App, which shows routes and train directions in real-time. It's super easy to use!

Beyond being a bit of a walk from the subway, everything else was impeccable. The room was spacious, and the corner glass windows offered great views. The tower building was affordable, unlike the main building which was out of my price range. The garden was expansive, though the cherry blossoms weren't in full bloom yet, so there weren't many flowers. The lower floors are all shopping malls; you can spend a lot of time just wandering around the hotel, from the tower to the main building. It's a great way to pass the time.

The location is incredibly convenient, especially if you're planning to shop in Tokyo, particularly Ginza. You should definitely consider staying here. Since it's a 'premium' property, the overall feel is a step up from the usual Mitsui Garden hotels. The breakfast spread is fantastic, and while the room is a tad small, it's perfectly acceptable.

I stayed at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo again during a layover, specifically on the Imperial Floor. I was able to check in early, and the welcome snack was absolutely delicious! I tried different breakfast options, and the pancakes at the American restaurant on the first floor were fantastic! The service, as always, was excellent – a mix of proud professionalism and Showa-era charm. The room was clean and well-maintained. If you want to experience the Imperial's traditional set menu, you need to book three days in advance (it's incredibly tasty, I was stuffed, haha).

The hotel's location is excellent, right next to Tokyo Dome City – which has everything from shows to dining and entertainment. There's a spacious and comfortable outdoor area, and even amusement park rides like roller coasters, making it super convenient if you're traveling with kids. You can reach the subway and train stations in just a few minutes on foot, making getting around a breeze. The room was quite spacious. Although the facilities aren't brand new, it was very clean and tidy. There are several high-speed scenic elevators that offer great city views. Our room happened to overlook the beautiful Tokyo Dome City, which was stunning both day and night. The lobby is grand and spacious, and there's an automatic foreign currency exchange machine available.

The staff is very professional and friendly. Its a very Japanese style service, smiles but professional and quick and blunt. Overall stay experience is very good as view is best if you are facing Tokyo tower. Property is very big and complex, so be prepared to spend alot of time wandering around. There are a few metro/subway lines. However, you need to walk around 10-15minutes to reach them.

Generally, it's like a typical Japanese hotel – the room is very small, but for a traveler who just needs a place to sleep, it's perfectly adequate. No frills, very clean and tidy, and the location is excellent. The value for money is truly outstanding!

Facilities: The hotel is very new, and there's plenty of space to open up your luggage. Hygiene: The room was cleaned very well. There's a sticker on the door to request towel changes or room cleaning, which is very convenient. Environment: The location is great, right in the center of Ginza, making shopping incredibly easy. Service: The service was excellent 👍🏻. Extending my stay in the same room and luggage storage were both handled seamlessly.

This was my third stay, and this hotel truly is a hidden gem among all the hotels in Tokyo. Every morning, I'd wake up and walk to the outer market for breakfast. The hotel service is also excellent. Previously, the bathroom in the same room type was different, so I contacted Trip.com. Trip.com then reached out to the hotel, and a dedicated staff member showed us several room types to understand the situation, and then changed us to a satisfactory room. On each floor, room numbers 20-25 are double rooms. Rooms 20 and 25 have bathrooms like the one shown in picture two, while rooms 21-24 have better bathrooms with separate bathtubs and showers. Also, rooms 21-24 have beds that are actually 1.8m, while rooms 20 and 25 have 1.6m beds, even though all are listed as 1.6m – they are actually different! However, room 20 is the furthest from the elevator, so it depends on personal preference. All in all, I'm very satisfied with this price point in Tokyo.

I stayed here for a conference, and it was quite busy, mostly with business travelers. The subway station is right downstairs, and it's within walking distance to the Big Sight exhibition center. As a Hilton Honors member, I got free breakfast, and eating in the lounge meant no waiting in line. The room was relatively spacious compared to most in central Tokyo, though still on the smaller side, but it was very clean and the service was good. There's a direct bus to Haneda Airport right outside, which is super convenient, and there were always taxis waiting downstairs.

Room and bed were very comfortable, immaculately clean and modern. 2 mins walk from train station, if you need lift access to train then a 6 mins walk, we had a stroller. Breakfast was a bit of a zoo, we went during Christmas, very busy! But tables were spacious so even though there were so many people you don’t feel cramped. Good variety of food selection. We had dinner at the Japanese teppanyaki restaurant. Delicious, especially the tuna salad. I found the lobby staff a little lack of personality, at check in, no mentioning of where breakfast will be, what time check out is. Just checked you in and that’s it, no personal notes in the room. When I expressed I’ve lost my phone at the shop in Tokyo, no sign of empathy (it was a western male staff) no gesture of helpfulness, very cold and robotic. This goes for concierge also, he is an older western gentleman, he needs to use Google translate also which is frustrating cause I could do exactly the same research with Google translate. Overall, hardware is solid, need to fine tune the staff, sprinkle a little bit of personality in them.

This hotel is super convenient, right by the Odaiba metro station – you can see it as soon as you exit! It was really easy to get to my exhibition, just a few stops away. The room was spacious enough, and for Tokyo, you get great value for your money at this price point. Plus, there's a mall nearby, so dining options are plentiful. Right across from Shinagawa Station, this hotel is super convenient for getting anywhere as Shinagawa is one of Tokyo's major transportation hubs. There's a 7-Eleven on the 2nd floor of the hotel annex, though it gets so busy during peak hours that the staff look completely worn out. It's generally very convenient if you avoid the 7-9 PM rush. I was a bit disappointed that the ice machine on my floor was out of order during my stay. The breakfast buffet was absolutely delicious, with both Western and Japanese options, including cold udon, curry rice, gyudon, and freshly made onigiri.

It was 5:30 PM in Otemachi, Tokyo, and a massive halo, like a holy light, enveloped the area, reflecting the silhouette of the world's most beautiful CBD on the glass facade of Otemachi Tower. Perched atop this magnificent skyscraper, Aman Tokyo, which stunned the world a decade ago, remains an unparalleled benchmark for modern city hotels. |The soaring 30-meter high atrium, crafted with washi lanterns, wood textures, and concrete and rock, creates a 'dry landscape' garden in the urban clouds. |The view facing the Imperial Palace is arguably Tokyo's most beautiful skyline (it ruthlessly trumps the already impressive view from the neighboring Bulgari). |While the ambiance at Arva, the Italian restaurant on the other side of the lobby, is superb, the food wasn't to my taste. I'd recommend the Aman Cafe on the first floor, a glasshouse enveloped by the 'Otemachi Forest' oasis instead.

Located on the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station, this hotel, though not large, offers exceptionally warm and attentive service. Every staff member I encountered greeted me proactively. I arrived at 2:15 PM, before check-in time, and stored my luggage. After a quick stroll around the area, I returned to find my bags already neatly placed in my room. When I needed more water, the front desk delivered it to my room in an instant. The room itself was very quiet and well-equipped with all necessary amenities. For such a central location, the value for money is outstanding. The view from the window is excellent; during the day, the train tracks are busy with trains coming and going, while at night, the city lights are spectacular. I even saw a rainbow on the day I checked in – a lovely start to my stay.

The hotel isn't right next to a subway station, but the shuttle bus service is super convenient, running every 15 minutes to and from Meguro Station. It pretty much covers all your transportation needs. It wasn't until after we checked out that we realized they'd upgraded our room type! It was definitely bigger, and we could easily spread out three 28-inch suitcases, which was really handy. The only downside was that the facilities felt a bit old. A special shout-out to the breakfast on the 45th floor. While it doesn't have as many options as the second-floor breakfast, every single item is exquisite. Though small, this hotel has everything you need. Its Ginza location is incredibly convenient, perfect for shopping or quickly getting to Narita Airport via the expressway. What truly impressed me is how many features are packed into such a compact space. They have a coin-operated laundry and a large public bath. The room, which I'd estimate at about 20 square meters, even managed to fit bunk beds (1.2m/1.5m), making it very family-friendly. A minor point is that since the hotel is directly above the subway, you occasionally feel vibrations as trains pass. This led to a funny moment when an actual earthquake hit at night, and I initially thought it was just another train going by!

Tokyo Station/Nihonbashi Tokyo|1.84km from city center
Hoshinoya Tokyo is situated in a tower in Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, uniquely blending a traditional Japanese garden with a high-rise hotel concept. While its immediate surroundings are dominated by corporate offices like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, its location isn't as prime as other similarly priced luxury hotels such as The Peninsula Tokyo or Bulgari, with a noticeable lack of nearby dining options or convenience stores. The service, on the other hand, truly made guests feel at home. Each floor boasts a dedicated Japanese-style common area, but the atmosphere felt a bit too rigid or rule-bound. For example, when I asked for a second welcome dessert, it wasn't possible. However, I would strongly advise against staying here for a business trip. Firstly, the hotel's policy of not allowing unregistered guests to enter is quite inconvenient and arguably unsuitable for a business-oriented establishment. Secondly, the hotel itself offers a rich array of experiences – from its two-Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant to kimono fittings, tea ceremonies, kendo classes, hot springs, and sightseeing bicycles. These features highlight its strong appeal for leisure travel, making it less ideal for business.

This was my first time visiting Tokyo, and I stayed at Agora for five days: 🤵‍♀️ During check-in, although the staff didn't speak Chinese, they provided detailed check-in instructions in Chinese. All the front desk staff I encountered during my stay had excellent attitudes.👍🏻 🧹 The hotel usually cleans rooms every three days. If you need daily cleaning, just put the magnetic sign from your room outside your door before noon on that day. 🛏️ I chose a twin room, and when I opened the door, I found they had pushed two single beds together. The size was decent, and two adults could sleep comfortably without feeling cramped. 📍 The location is excellent. Downstairs, there's a restaurant called Bansuke that serves delicious fried fish ochazuke. Just a short walk away, you'll find FamilyMart, Lawson, and 7-Eleven. There are also drugstores and restaurants at the large intersection outside. 🚇 Higashi-Ginza Station is just around the corner from the hotel entrance, making it very convenient to take the Asakusa Line and Hibiya Line. There's also an express train directly to the airport; just check Google Maps for the schedule. If you prefer to walk to Ginza Station, there's a dedicated underground passage, which is very convenient. 🛍️ If you want to go shopping, most malls are about a 10-minute walk away, and the street is quite lively. 💦 The only downside is that the room is indeed quite small, with barely enough space to lay one suitcase flat. But honestly, for this price, getting such a great location is already very satisfying. The experience was excellent, and I'm grateful to Agora for a wonderful memory of Tokyo.🥰
