Cheap Hotels in Melbourne

"I booked a king-sized room, and both the space and the bed were quite large. Honestly, a standard-sized room probably would have been enough. The hotel has been recently renovated, so it still looks pretty new. The location is listed as Chinatown, but the nearest tram stops are about a 6-minute walk away. Thankfully, Melbourne's city center is quite compact. The room temperature can be adjusted freely. I'm not sure if there were disposable slippers – I've forgotten. We had two people staying, but they only provided one set of toothbrushes and amenities daily, so I was glad I'd brought my own. There's a small fridge with a complimentary carton of milk inside, but it didn't come with a straw. Things that brought down the score: One night, around 9 PM, the fire alarm went off. Everyone rushed downstairs, only to be told it was a false alarm. As we were halfway back up, it started ringing again, another false alarm. And then there's the noise. The king rooms face the street, and the noise mainly came from modified cars driven by 'ghost riders' all night, and then various emergency vehicles starting from 6 or 7 AM. If you've ever been to Thailand, the constant roar of motorcycles on the street is exactly what it was like. I even took two videos so you could get a feel for it, and those weren't even the loudest moments, just the mildest sounds. It felt like I was sleeping on the street. I don't think the hotel needs renovation; what it really needs is soundproof windows, otherwise, it's not suitable for a comfortable stay."

"i love the service and exclusivity. love how accessible to adult arcade. walk in area was amazing. i requested for late check out, but it was decline ): apart from that, really love the stay. fully recharged. about 20 mins walk to DFO. if you are driving, remember to play in adult arcade to deduct the parking fees! first time encounter room services is chargable!!"

"The hotel is in good location, my room happens to face another building so there is no view. I booked on 27 July to 1 st August then continue to 1st to 8th August 2026. I told the receptionist on 31st July shall my current room is empty, we prefer not to move, even though we paid for higher room category on the 1st aug, because we donot to move back and forth with so many luggages which is wasting time and energy, but the hotel staff replied my room will be occupied as hotel is full on 1st aug. This morning 1st aug we packed up so many luggages and belongings as in the photo on the way to new room, the staff kindly asked us, notifying shall we are going back to our original queen bed apartment tomorrow It’s better we do not move. Thus, She looked up in her data and finally we could use the same room today. It was such unpleasant and tiring to pack up then unpack to go back forth to the same room in half day, how could these be happening? And we also lost our white towel that we hanged so hotel doesn’t have to laundry as per notes. It’s unfortunate the staff yesterday did not thoroughly help us."

(where all the restaurants are here), QV mall (BigW, Woolworth), Melbourne central (Coles), Emporium (Rebel), state library - Staffs are very friendly and helpful. They responded well to my requests. - Bathroom size is very good. - Bedroom size is a bit small, but enough for 1 person to stay (queen size room) - The room is a bit dark, but the window helps when I need to work on my laptop. - I stayed here for 6 nights and I already booked this hotel for my next trip to Melbourne."

"Hotel was close to several train and tram stations, making it easy to access a variety of routes and lines. There were also plenty of great food and drink options nearby — from morning coffee and afternoon matcha to flaky pastries and comforting hot meals. While some places were not immediately next door, they were still comfortably walkable, including Little Rogue, Matcha Kobo, Puzzle Coffee, Time After Time, Lulu’s Malaysian Hawker, and many more. Also worth mentioning, I arrived in Melbourne earlier than expected and called the hotel to ask when the room would be ready. The staff were punctual and reliable, as I was able to check in exactly at the time they advised the room would be available."

"I had a great stay at Melbourne City Backpackers. The location is perfect—just a short walk from Southern Cross Station, trams, and plenty of cafés and restaurants, which made getting around Melbourne really easy. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help with recommendations or any questions. The hostel had a good social atmosphere without feeling like a party hostel, so it was easy to meet other travellers while still getting a good night’s sleep. The rooms and shared bathrooms were kept clean, and the free breakfast was a nice bonus. Overall, it’s great value for money, especially if you’re looking for a central place to stay in Melbourne. I’d definitely stay here again and would recommend it to other backpackers."

"The room was quite spacious, and the location is very central. There's a famous comic book store across the street that sells American comics. The room didn't have amenities like slippers or toothbrushes, which you had to request from the front desk. Sometimes, there were staff at the front desk who spoke Chinese. Overall, it was very good, and I recommend it."

"Had a great stay at ibis Melbourne Central. The location is excellent, with many attractions, restaurants, and public transport options within walking distance. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. Check-in and check-out were smooth, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Overall, it offered great value for money and made exploring Melbourne very convenient. I would happily stay here again on my next visit."

"Facilities: When I booked, I was drawn to the bathroom window's promise of a great view. However, upon arrival, I was utterly disappointed. The window opened directly onto a building less than 10 meters away. I then realized that the more expensive room types were on lower floors, and below the tenth floor, the view from the window was almost completely obstructed. The scenery shown in the promotional images was a total deception. Cleanliness: Overall, the hygiene was quite good. Environment: It's located at the end of Chinatown, and the tram stop is right downstairs, which is very convenient. Service: Pretty good. Finally, a heads-up to friends driving: absolutely do NOT fall for the parking garage entrance ads that claim parking after a certain time costs only around twenty-something dollars! It's a complete scam. We parked after 5 PM, and the next day, it showed a charge of $170! When we went to check, the outdoor ad had changed too. That's when I discovered that all the reviews for this parking garage on Google Maps were from people who had been scammed. It's truly disgusting. We contacted the hotel, and they managed to get it reduced to $60."

"- Location near Southern Cross station, but not close to tram station, you need about 10 mins walk to tram station. For me, it’s not that convenient. - Room is not that clean but acceptable - Room size is pretty large for this price in CBD - Elevator and hallway need maintenance - Wall and door is not well sound proof. When I slept, I always woke up when the rooms next door closed their doors or walk passed my room. - In my opinion, overall atmosphere is a bit scary for women solo traveler."
