"I booked this room purely for its location, which is almost central and convenient for getting everywhere. However: 1. The first room I was given had its door directly facing the corridor. From a basic understanding of feng shui, as well as visually and psychologically, it was very uncomfortable. After providing feedback to the front desk, they changed it. 2. The second room was in a corner, next to a cleaning closet. When I came back for a rest around 2 or 3 PM, there was a constant clicking noise. 3. After my afternoon nap, I pulled back the duvet to find three stains on the sheet. I checked my pajamas and confirmed I hadn't caused them myself. After reporting it, they changed it again! 4. On the last morning, while I was using the toilet, all the lights in the room suddenly went out!!! The entire hotel had a power and water outage?!!! The smart toilet lost power and couldn't even release its stored water???... I've traveled countless times, but this kind of experience is truly a first! Thankfully, the door could still open, so I promptly checked out and left, ending this ordeal!"

The Optimistic Perspective: the culmination of a journey, the farthest reach of vision, and the profound comprehension of thought. Nestled within the ancient city of northern China, Grand Zen Hotel revives its essence while embracing optimism. Adhering to a minimalist Zen aesthetic with "simplicity" as its core design principle, the hotel seamlessly integrates natural and modern elements, reflecting a sincere appreciation for life and interpreting a tranquil Zen-inspired space. Located in Datong, an ancient city once known as "the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty and a significant stronghold during the Ming and Qing Dynasties," Grand Zen Hotel bridges the past and present, harmonizing with the frontier customs and showcasing the allure of this historic capital. Upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted by an elegant and refined ambiance. The serene Chinese character wall, sunken leisure sofas, circular column lamps embedded into the walls, and soft lighting illuminating the textured surfaces create a naturally inviting atmosphere. Whether it is the morning sunlight or evening glow, a breezy sunny day or a gentle drizzle, each moment immerses visitors in the interplay of time and scenery, evoking a sense of peace and tranquility. The majestic ancient city wall, rippling moat, and picturesque ribbon-shaped park coexist harmoniously with the diverse temples, churches, pavilions, archways, and quadrangle courtyards within the city, forming a breathtaking panorama. Morning light filters through the skylight, dancing across plush beds, while warm floor lamps quietly stand beside the corridor grilles, reminiscent of an old friend's care. The strategically placed greenery within the water system softens the entire space, creating an atmosphere of serenity and poetic beauty, akin to the flowing sleeves of a scholar in the wind. With 70 exquisitely designed guest rooms, zero-pressure mattresses for ultimate comfort, invigorating bathing facilities, and luxurious bed linens comparable to those of five-star hotels, all complemented by soft lighting, the hotel exemplifies meticulous attention to detail. Every aspect ensures comfort and warmth, offering guests a perfect retreat. From their rooms, guests can admire the sunset and starry skies, or indulge in leisurely moments of reading, tea-drinking, basking in the sun, and daydreaming—a true embodiment of the slow-paced lifestyle characteristic of the ancient capital. In the flow of time, one learns to embrace stillness and wisdom. Clarity about the world leads to clarity about oneself. In a fleeting moment, enlightenment may strike, revealing the clarity and serenity of moonlight on cold water. Even if brief, such moments are eternal. Despite the world's distractions and chaos, as long as the Zen spirit endures, the heart remains serene, and enlightenment is naturally attained.

"The hotel boasts a superb location, right next to the ancient city. The rooms, though small, are fully equipped. A shared washing machine is available. The layout matches the hotel's name, with a touch of Zen. The front desk staff are welcoming, and a small gift is given upon check-out. Special praise goes to the breakfast chef on the basement level; his cooking is superb, his attitude is exceptionally warm, and his communication skills are excellent. Very good. The hotel offers great value for money and adds to the reputation of Datong Cultural Tourism."

This is the third time my family and I have visited Datong. The first two times we stayed in hotels, but this time we wanted to try a guesthouse. After checking reviews on Dazhong Dianping, we chose Bo.Yuan Guesthouse (Huayan Temple Branch) because of the traveler comments and its 4.9 high rating. The experience was excellent, so I wanted to share my review. The day before our trip, the guesthouse manager proactively called us to discuss our itinerary in Datong and our mode of transportation. She also offered a pick-up service, so we provided our travel details. Before we arrived at Datong South Station, a lady called to confirm the pick-up time and location, and informed us of her arrival time. When we got to the waiting area, we waited for about two minutes. The guesthouse lady called again, repeatedly apologizing for being two minutes late. She reconfirmed our waiting spot and described what she was wearing so we wouldn't miss her. When we met her, she didn't look like a typical pick-up driver, but rather a very elegant and young lady. She greeted my family and me warmly, saying, ”I'm so sorry for being two minutes late. The hotel is quite busy today, and the regular pick-up driver couldn't make it. After they told me, I rushed over to pick you up myself. Our hotel values integrity, and since we promised a pick-up service, even if there was no available car, I couldn't use a ride-hailing app. So, I truly apologize for being a few minutes late.” From this conversation, we learned that she was the female owner of the guesthouse. Throughout the journey, she was very talkative and friendly, making us feel completely at ease. She introduced us to the guesthouse and the unique features of Datong, and soon we arrived at the guesthouse. We chatted a lot with her during the short half-hour drive—perhaps it was fate. **1. Guesthouse Environment and Service:** Upon arriving at the guesthouse courtyard, we found it to be a very distinctive Siheyuan (quadrangle courtyard). The staff were all very enthusiastic, proactively helping us with our luggage and offering us tea. Since we arrived before check-in time, our room was still being cleaned. To minimize our waiting time, the owner personally urged the cleaning staff to finish quickly. She also used the waiting time to introduce us to the guesthouse's room features and restaurant. Once the room was ready, our room was on the second floor. The staff proactively helped us take our luggage up and turned on the air conditioning. Inside the room, it felt wonderful. Although the room retained the ancient charm of a Siheyuan, the infrastructure was very modern and high-tech, featuring central air conditioning, button-controlled panels, a projector instead of a TV, and an electric toilet. The hotel amenities also catered thoughtfully to modern women, such as essential oils in the toiletries, and provided toilet seat covers, disinfectant wipes, and wet wipes. Additionally, the welcome fruit quality was excellent; the owner mentioned she personally selected and purchased everything herself. The room was very quiet. I usually have trouble sleeping, but this time, I didn't experience insomnia due to changing locations. Instead, I slept exceptionally well because of the tranquil courtyard. **2. Guesthouse Breakfast:** From the room to the restaurant, every staff member we encountered greeted us warmly. In the restaurant, the staff proactively introduced the breakfast options and asked if we needed any help. The breakfast selection was very rich, combining Western and Chinese dishes to satisfy every guest's palate. There was vegetable salad, fruit platters, coffee, milk, yogurt, sausages, grilled chicken wings, stir-fried baby cabbage, bread, sweet potatoes, corn, purple rice paste, knife-cut noodles, wontons, and dumplings. The ingredients for these dishes were all personally selected and purchased by the owner, ensuring their freshness. All dishes were freshly prepared by the chef and tasted excellent. Although the restaurant might not be as large or offer as many varieties as four or five-star hotels, the quality of ingredients and taste were certainly on par with their culinary standards. Escaping the hustle and bustle of the big city for a weekend in Datong, our short two-day trip is coming to an end. The cultural heritage of Datong, its unique cuisine, and our stay at Bo.Yuan Guesthouse have all left a wonderful impression on me. Next time I visit Datong, I will definitely choose Bo.Yuan Guesthouse again. I wish the owner great success in her business! See you next time, Datong!

An absolutely gem inside the Datong ancient city square in a modern gated compound, conveniently located within walking distance to shops, restaurants and many ancient and historical sites. Our booking came with a free pick up and drop off from the train station. The room is super clean, comfortable and well equipped ( with Dyson hair drier) whilst the toilet is fully automatic with a heated seat . Our main highlight is most definitely the incredible staff. They were warm, attentive and the service was so personal that our experience in Datong became so special. We were concerned as we weren’t able to book our entry ticket to the Hanging temple before we arrived, but the staff recommended a fantastic driver who took us there early in the morning and ensured everything worked out well. The homemade and included breakfast was delicious and incredibly special . They also prepared our breakfast to go on the day we left very early in the morning. Similarly whenever we asked for a recommendation for restaurants or activities, they very kindly personally accompanied us to where we needed to go whilst ensuring we were attended to. All their suggestions were superb. The level of attention we received is simply unmatched compared to that of large hotel chain.

This guesthouse in Datong is an absolute gem! The room is huge, so spacious for our family of four. It's incredibly clean, and all the facilities are brand new. The kids absolutely loved soaking in the bathtub. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented, starting our day off with a great mood. The owner is super nice and accommodating, always happy to help, and very pet-friendly. All the staff members were smiling throughout our stay. I highly, highly recommend staying here!

I've been to Datong twice, and this time I stayed in a guesthouse in the ancient city, which was a truly different experience. First off, the service was impeccable, far superior to any star-rated hotel. From booking to check-in and check-out, the staff's service-oriented mindset was excellent and incredibly thoughtful. Next, the decor: it's anything but the cookie-cutter style you find in hotels. From the lobby to the rooms, everything is unique and distinctive, I'd say it's an Italian style. The bedding and amenities in the room are all branded, and there's plenty of hot water. Breakfast is a nine-grid affair, and the sliced noodles were delicious. The coffee at the front desk was also good. They even offer free try-ons for travel photography outfits. Overall, the experience was fantastic and really changed my perception of guesthouses. I'll definitely come back to experience it again if I get the chance!

I chose Nan She for both of my trips to Datong, spaced about twenty days apart. The first time was by chance, but the second was a deliberate choice, both reflecting my high appreciation for every aspect of Nan She. It's located right beneath the North City Wall of the ancient city, close to Daiwang Mansion and Kuixing Tower. Its proximity to the main road makes getting around very convenient. The entrance to the North City Wall is just a few minutes' walk away, offering a superb spot to watch the sunset over the ancient city. The breakfast at the guesthouse is absolutely delicious. The rooms are spotless, and the bedding is clean; every detail is perfectly executed. The overall service is beyond words – attentive, warm, and thoughtful. Choosing the right accommodation is a crucial part of enhancing the travel experience, and both of my stays here provided an excellent one. Datong is a city you'll want to revisit; the more you get to know it, the more you'll love it. The blend of history and modernity, delicious food, and beautiful scenery offers endless appeal. A big thank you to all the staff at Nan She. Your hard work contributes to the dreamy Datong of today and will surely bring you an even brighter future! Wishing you all the best! 🌹🌹🌹

I arrived in Datong on a whim and booked this hostel last minute. I stayed in the 12-bed dorm which is a large dorm with a small table and chairs, lockers, a sink to brush your teeth/wash your face and a private bathroom (with a hot water shower and toilet). The beds were comfy and have curtains and the airconditioning is strong. WiFi works well too. The dorm and the bathroom are cleaned every day. The hostel provides face towels, earplugs, toothbrushes and toilet paper. There is a comfortable lounge area just outside of the dorms. It is really a great hostel, but there is one negative aspect, the private bathroom: the glass is semi-see through (which isn’t too bad since there are just women in the room), but it lets through all the noise and light. So when somebody goes to the toilet and turns on the light the whole room lights up which even with the curtains closed will disturb your sleep. Also, the toilet flush is very loud so every time somebody flushes the toilet it can be heard through the entire room which again disturbs sleep. If you’re a deep sleeper or don’t mind wearing ear plugs then I can definitely recommend the hostel!

Facilities: The design is excellent, and all the amenities are thoughtfully arranged and very practical. The bed and pillows are incredibly comfortable; lying down felt so therapeutic, and I fell asleep almost instantly. Hygiene: The hygiene was impeccable. Environment: The location is perfect, within walking distance of Daiwang Mansion, Drum Tower, and Huayan Temple. After watching the iron flower performance at night, it was just a short stroll back to bed. Service: The service was incredibly attentive and prompt. The butler recommended many delicious local eateries, and they were all indeed fantastic. The tea at the front desk was also delightful; I'd fill my thermos every time I went out – it was so comforting. They even offered a thoughtful bedtime gift, making the overall experience incredibly pleasant.

As a solo traveler, I was a little apprehensive before my trip, secretly hoping there wouldn't be any unpleasant surprises, but it turns out I worried too much. This place boasts an excellent location in Wulong Alley, with beautiful surroundings that are safe and comfortable, and fully equipped facilities. Because it's not right next to the busiest snack streets, it's very quiet at night, allowing for a truly restful sleep – huge thumbs up! It's close to the North City Wall and convenient for visiting attractions like Huayan Temple, Daiwangfu, and the Nine Dragon Screen in the ancient city. It was also easy to reach all the eateries on my must-try list, such as Longjuxiang, Zini 369, Heshengcai, and Xijindao Snacks, and I managed to check them all off! I passed by Kuixing Tower and its wishing doll countless times; perhaps it was fate, haha 😄. For those who are too lazy to even walk a kilometer, there are shared bikes available. The owner is incredibly welcoming; they contacted me half a day in advance, added me on WeChat, and waited for me at the entrance. They went over all the important details and even asked about my breakfast preferences for the next day. The breakfast itself was perfectly portioned, exquisite, and nutritious. This place exceeded my expectations, another big thumbs up! Choosing this accommodation has made me even more excited for future solo travels. I hope the owner's business thrives, and I look forward to returning with my child and family sometime in the future for another visit.

The hotel's location is superb; it's the perfect choice for exploring the old city, with all the sights and great food nearby. The hotel is very clean, the restaurant food is delicious, and the staff provide excellent service. As I was traveling alone and wanted to try local specialties, the staff kindly reduced the portion sizes, which was great – tasty and no waste! The room facilities are new, but there's a minor issue: the sink and shower are in separate areas, and the bath towels are kept under the sink. This makes it inconvenient to grab a towel after showering. If you take it into the shower beforehand, there's nowhere to hang it. Perhaps a hook could be added?

It is two kilometers away from the ancient city of Datong. You can achieve sightseeing freedom by scanning an electric shared bicycle downstairs. If there is a laundry room for facilities, it would be great, because in summer, there are more clothes that are sweaty and not washed. There is no laundry room or drying room for long stay, the hotel can change the operation strategy. There are also bath towels that are disposable, although convenient but very thin, and the experience is not good.
