"Stepping into Datong Ancient City in the afternoon, the first pleasant surprise was stumbling upon Renyi Inn. The inn's antique courtyard, adorned with carved beams and painted rafters, and warm red lanterns, instantly brought a sense of calm. The family who runs the inn is incredibly humble and kind, their conversations warm and thoughtful, making you feel right at home. What's even more admirable is their exceptional care for animals; the inn is like a mini-zoo. They treat every little creature with gentleness and patience, which in turn fills the entire courtyard with life and spirit. Upon entering, a majestic grey parrot, both poised and lively, greeted me from the front desk – I'd never seen such a large pet parrot before! Two smaller parrots chirped happily nearby, completely unafraid of strangers, lively and adorable. Outside my room was a small courtyard with two tea tables. After a 'special forces'-style day of temple hopping, when I was tired to the point of tears, sitting there enjoying a cup of tea was incredibly relaxing. In the adjacent fish pond, a dozen or so vibrant koi, each weighing at least two to three pounds, swam gracefully, their bodies stretching elegantly. Next to the pond, a large and a small tortoise slowly ambled, quiet and therapeutic. In a corner cage, a tiny grey squirrel darted around, agile and playful. As dusk fell, watching the lights reflect on the pond and listening to the soft sounds of the small animals, the weariness of travel seemed to melt away in this gentle atmosphere, leaving my heart filled with peace and healing. I thought this wonderful experience was complete, but to my surprise, a new delight awaited me the next morning – two peacocks, 'Wenqing' (blue and white) and 'Xiaofeng' (emerald green), strolled leisurely in the courtyard with their magnificent tails fanned out – yes, they even have names! The eye-spots on their tail feathers shimmered, as if they were wearing the entire starry sky, beautiful like something straight out of an ancient painting. For a moment, I couldn't tell if I was in an inn or a secret wonderland. Renyi Inn is far more than just a place to stay; it's a hidden gem within the ancient city. The harmonious coexistence of people and animals creates a warm and healing atmosphere, adding countless gentle and delightful moments to this journey."

"A rather mediocre experience. I've been a Ctrip member for 15 years and rarely leave bad reviews, so I'll give this a passing grade of 3.0. The main reasons for the average experience were: 1. My baby had a fever in the middle of the night and couldn't get up the next day. I wanted to take some breakfast back to the room, but they wouldn't allow it, and the staff's attitude was quite stiff. At over 1700 RMB for two nights for three adults and one child, the price wasn't cheap. Since the hotel couldn't be understanding towards me, I can't be understanding towards them in my rating. 2. There must be floor heating or central air conditioning, because the room was extremely dry, even drier than indoors in Beijing during the heating season."

"This hotel is truly luxurious and conveniently located in the new city. It's my top choice when visiting Datong, as it's not far from the ancient city, museums, Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, and other attractions. Downstairs, you'll find Fengling Pavilion, where the shaomai (steamed dumplings) are absolutely delicious. During my stay in Datong, I found the local people to be incredibly kind! I highly recommend everyone to visit Datong at least once if they get the chance, to experience the Northern Wei dynasty's charm."

The Howard Johnson Jindi Plaza (Datong Jindi Haosheng Dajiudian) is conveniently located in Datong’s commercial district, within close reach of many historical sites. On-site restaurants serve Chinese, Japanese and Western cuisine.Meeting rooms and a business center are available for those traveling on business. This Datong hotel provides Wi-Fi in public areas and charged parking.Recreational facilities include a gym, indoor swimming pool, beauty salon and sauna.

"The hotel's location is decent, not far from the ancient city. The room is spacious, but the luggage rack is a bit small. The bathroom has a separate shower and tub, and the staff thoughtfully provided a disposable bathtub liner. There were welcome fruits in the room, and even pear juice in the evening to combat Datong's dry climate. So thoughtful! Breakfast offered a wide variety of options and was quickly replenished. I accidentally burned a slice of toast, and the chef, who was refilling the bread, kindly took my burnt toast away. So heartwarming! However, I found an ashtray from the previous guest hidden behind a water bottle, which made me a bit concerned about the overall hygiene. Also, finding a seat at breakfast was always a scramble. The hotel needs to address this issue."

"The room was very clean, and the underfloor heating was comfortable – not too cold, but not stuffy either. The small courtyard was very quiet, and being in the old town, everything was within walking distance. The staff were also very helpful; even when we woke up late, they still saved some warm breakfast for us. Housekeeping was always prompt during our multi-day stay!"

"I stayed in Datong for one night on a business trip. I found a newly opened hotel and thought about being clean. I didn't expect it to exceed expectations. This price enjoys the quality of a thousand yuan hotel! ! (The puppy at the door is weird and cute) I recommend everyone to try it. I originally went out and loved to bring my own hair dryer, but this one is Dyson's! White belt 🤣 Newly opened and sent a small cocktail. It is also very good to drink ~ nice service. Super nice hotel. I hope to keep it. I will set it next time I travel. ❤️"

"The hotel is a short distance from Datong Ancient City, walkable or bikeable. A taxi costs only 7 yuan. The surrounding area isn't great for walking, so I don't particularly recommend it. The breakfast restaurant is small, and the variety of options is average, not very extensive. The room facilities are also just okay; the bath towels and toilet paper are of very poor quality, not fitting for a Hilton-branded hotel. I hope this can be improved. There also seemed to be an issue with the room's electricity, it was intermittent, and the charging port on the outlet wouldn't charge my data cable properly – perhaps unstable voltage? I didn't investigate further as I was checking out soon. Honestly, this trip wasn't as perfect as I'd hoped, and it wasn't just the hotel. Overall, the service level feels a bit behind first-tier cities, and there's a lot of room for improvement compared to other tourist cities. However, the cultural landscape of Datong is absolutely stunning: the Hanging Temple, Mount Heng, the Ancient City, the Grottoes, Huayan Temple… every single one is unforgettable. In summary, I hope Shanxi continues to improve."

"Datong Jixia Mountain, 3600 a night – seriously, avoid this place. I guess you could say it's the best hotel in Datong, but by the same token, it absolutely does not live up to its price. Maybe it's because Wen Yu Tang gave me so many pleasant surprises that I had such high hopes for Jixia Mountain, but it turns out, with very few exceptions, B&Bs are just B&Bs. The fact is, don't set your expectations too high. The entire public area feels like it's purely for Instagram check-ins. Everyone comes here determined to get that perfect shot. All the facilities are incredibly user-unfriendly, plus the key card system often takes multiple attempts to work. Inside, the cheap, hard finishes are just indescribable. Did the designer even consider the actual guest experience when they designed this place? The most outrageous issues are the privacy and lighting in the room. The bedroom in my room had a huge glass window directly facing the outdoor corridor, separated only by a wooden fence. I could clearly see the opposite rooms and courtyard. I was hoping the turndown service would be more thoughtful, but the staff didn't even bother to close the blackout curtains on the corridor side. I wanted to get a good night's sleep, but then I realized there were an insane number of light sources in the room. After turning off all the lights, all the switch buttons glowed in the dark. I was already exhausted from a packed day of 'special forces'-style sightseeing, and I couldn't sleep well because of these glowing buttons. Then, early in the morning, I was woken up directly by sunlight streaming in from the corridor. Now I'm utterly exhausted. The only thing I can praise is the staff. They were very enthusiastic and you could tell they tried very hard to meet guests' requests, but the overall service process still felt quite clunky. Never mind. Paying this price really bought me a lesson. The cost of having such high expectations was utter disappointment. (The restaurant food, however, was unexpectedly good, much lighter than outside, and the staff were very warm.)"

BBaoliqieA Must-Stay in Datong! I'd come back to this Siheyuan B&B a hundred times! My first trip to Datong, I came with an anticipation for the ancient city, but unexpectedly, a Siheyuan B&B (courtyard guesthouse) stole my heart and became a lasting favorite. Jiuheli is tucked away in the most central location, right by the South Gate of the ancient city. It’s an oasis of calm amidst the hustle and bustle. Instead of towering buildings, it's a traditional Siheyuan with one ground floor and two underground levels. The grey bricks, dark tiles, wooden corridors, and expansive courtyard with dappled light seamlessly blend the elegance of traditional Chinese architecture with modern living comfort and exquisite, delicate design. The entire guesthouse has only 9 rooms, each named poetically: Luxi, Weiyu, Xianzhou, Hewan, Chunxiu, Rimu, Yunting, Wushi, Qinghe. They are few but refined, quiet but beautiful, offering a sense of peace the moment you step in. I stayed in Luxi. The name is inspired by ”Zhanzhan Lusi, Feiyang Buxi” from the Book of Songs, evoking the clear and gentle morning dew. Stepping out, you're in the courtyard, and the floor-to-ceiling windows bring natural light and greenery indoors. It's quiet, spacious, and private, free from noise, only offering relaxation. The room features smart home controls, luxurious bedding, high-quality toiletries, and thoughtful details that are just right. It's simple yet sophisticated, comfortable yet effortless, with delightful surprises at every turn. Every day spent here was filled with warmth. Gentle breezes in the courtyard in the morning, quiet tea sips in the afternoon, watching the ancient city sunset in the evening, and soft lamplight at night. The outside world's buzz is gently kept at bay, while your inner self feels endlessly healed and content. There's no complicated dining here, but that's perfectly fine because just a few steps away are the ancient city's time-honored eateries and vibrant local life. This allows you to truly immerse yourself in Datong's rhythm of life, feeling free, relaxed, and at ease. The housekeeper is discreet and never intrusive, yet always thoughtfully attentive. Welcome fruit, hot tea, meticulous care – no over-the-top service, but you always feel valued and well-treated. Meeting Jiuheli on my first visit to Datong was truly a stroke of luck. Comfortable, quiet, stylish, and warm – the perfect experience, elegant surroundings, and heartfelt details made the entire trip exceptionally fulfilling. Next time I come to Datong, I will undoubtedly choose this place again. And I sincerely recommend Jiuheli to every first-time visitor to Datong. Stay once, and you'll understand that the best travel isn't about ticking off sights, but about finding peace of mind. And for peace of mind, Jiuheli is the place.

Llandscape456The host was very nice, understanding our needs in advance and personally picking us up from the parking lot to help with our luggage. The room was clean and hygienic, the bathroom was very large, and the toiletries were of good quality. The guesthouse is located in a residential area with antique-style buildings, mostly run by guesthouses; currently, parking is available on the roadside outside the complex. There are many restaurants nearby, but getting breakfast isn't very convenient. The old town center is about 1.6 kilometers from the guesthouse.

GGuest UserA relaxing, slow-paced trip! The room was spacious and cozy. The front desk ladies were enthusiastic, lively, beautiful, and thoughtful fairies. It was also very convenient for late-night snacks and ordering takeout – the delivery driver provided excellent and thorough service. I'm looking forward to my next stay! The laundry and drying facilities were very convenient. It's right across from Daiwang Mansion, so after exploring from the South Gate, it was super easy to head back for a good night's sleep.

JJoyce CPCThis hotel is located in the heart of the ancient city of Datong. Although there were few steps of staircase leading to the entrance of the hotel and the reception was on level 2 and our room type was only available on the 3rd level. Upon check in the hotel staff by the name of Xiao Guo was very helpful and she helped us to carry our luggages to our room at level 3.. There was a small window in our room overseeing the street. The room was spacious and very clean. All corners, fixtures and furnitures in our room were wiped very clean. All amenities were provided inside the room too. The bed mattress and pillow were soft and very comfortable. Body gel, hair shampoo, hair conditioner, hand wash and clothing detergent were all good quality. 2 water bottles, toothbrush, hair comb and slippers were provided in the room. There were space to hang our winter clothing and also washed socks and inner wears. The air-conditioner was superb as it can be adjusted to 4 types of air:normal, wet reduction, cold air and warm air, hence it made our stay more comfortable. There was also an air freshener machine in the room to refresh the air inside the room. So far this is the cleanest hotel room throughout all my China trips. The housekeeper was friendly and ensure the room being cleaned up daily. Overall, I would like to compliment the hotel staff by the name of Xiao Guo for her hospitality and kindness in helping us when we asked her for any information about Datong and places to eat. Xiao Guo always smilling and her warmness has let us felt very welcomed as a hotel guest. Another compliment was to be given to the housekeeper old lady who really did a great job to ensure the cleanliness of our hotel room and the entire hotel public areas. Highly recommended this hotel to all tourist.

MMethilanI spent nearly a week at Datong Milan/Magnolia Hotel (Dai Residence branch) and it was a very pleasant and enjoyable stay Location: - Nestled a quieter part of the ancient city, that provided a peaceful retreat after each day of exploring. - 10 minutes to some of the attractions of the old town - 15-20 minute walk to the popular restaurants and more attractions - 30 minute walk to Huayan Temple and its nearby street markets. I'm always happy to walk but if needed, I could always use DiDi to take me around. Falling asleep without street noise is something I like. There is a bit of building work going nearby, which is happening all over Datong Ancient City, but nothing too major. Nearby is the Ancient City's wall, but walk past that and you can see the locals dance in the morning in the park or walk along the canal/moat in the evening. Room: The room was surprisingly spacious, offering plenty of room to spread out and relax, a welcome change from cramped city accommodations. The staircase is a bit narrow, so those with lots of big luggage might struggle (no lift) Importantly, it was very clean and well equipped. I especially liked the Chinese tea ceremony set! Service: - Despite a noticeable language barrier, everyone went above and beyond with smiles, helpful gestures, and clear efforts to communicate. - Especially the manager, who told me about local food to try, things to do and asked if I needed anything. She noticed that I was bringing back leftovers from the restaurant, and bottled drinks from the shops, and said I could use the fridge. - I can't speak Chinese so when the delivery driver came to drop off my order, the staff will take it from the reception and bring it to me. - Unfortunately, breakfast isn't available here - Drinking water topped up. Humidifier and mosquito repellent were provided when needed. I will not hesitate to book here again on my next visit and I highly recommend this hotel for anyone seeking comfort and genuine warmth in Datong!

RRichard76ukThis weekend, I had the pleasure of staying at the Great Palace Hotel in Datong, and I must say it was an incredible experience from the moment we arrived. The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming, checking us in quickly and even upgrading us to the best available room. To our surprise, we were greeted with a thoughtful welcome that included a fresh fruit basket, traditional Chinese soup, and complimentary tea. The hotel offers an impressive breakfast selection, catering to both local and international tastes. The rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean, and the beds are incredibly comfortable—making it easy to unwind after a day of sightseeing. This was my second time staying at the Great Palace Hotel, and once again, it exceeded expectations. Its location is ideal—right in the heart of the city, close to all major tourist attractions and just a few kilometers from the train station. Special thanks to Manager 崔经理, who was exceptionally kind and helpful throughout our stay. I would wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Datong. What truly sets this hotel apart is the attention to detail and the genuine hospitality of the staff. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning guest, the service remains consistently high. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between traditional charm and modern comfort, making it a reliable choice for both leisure and business travelers. From check-in to check-out, every aspect of our stay was smooth, relaxing, and enjoyable.
