It's good place with good views. There are really beautiful buildings near here. But this park wasn't lit at all

It's a nice, large, and clean square that is surrounded by parks, the Shanghai Museum and some government buildings. It would be great if the square was taken advantage of with some sort of market and music happening to make it more lively.

Not much to say; a few kiosk type shops selling trinkets and toys. I wouldn't go specifically to see this, but I would walk around it after visiting the Three Gorges Museum. I went during the day so I would probably go at night as there might be more lights and more people. I would say you might want to go to the Walmart around the corner because they have some fresh food that you won't see at the US Walmart.

This used to be a racecourse, but now it has been changed to People's Square, which is very convenient to reach by subway. You can see all kinds of landmark buildings in People's Square. It is very comfortable to walk in the garden-like square. There is a red Chinese knot in front of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, which is very festive. There is a green area in the square where many peace doves are raised. Visitors feed them, which is natural and harmonious. It is quite interesting. I was a little panicked when I looked up to take pictures of the pigeons, fearing that the pigeons would suddenly poop.

This is an incredibly beautiful and atmospheric garden. It's one of Shanghai's most significant attractions (according to my personal rating). A must-see! But keep in mind that it feels like half of China has gathered in the garden at once, plus there are tourists too. There are simply so many people, and the space is limited. Meditation and relaxation are definitely not possible there, but for understanding and experiencing the culture, this place is definitely worth a visit.

Practical Tips for Visiting People's Square

Before setting off, keep these tips in mind:

  • Admission: People’s Square and People’s Park are free public spaces. Museums and performances are ticketed separately. Book popular shows ahead.
  • Reservations: Museums often want you to book online first. Check the official site before you go, especially on public holidays and during school vacations.
  • Identification: Carry your passport. Some museums and venues ask for ID at entry or when collecting tickets.
  • Transportation: Take the metro. Central Shanghai traffic is slow. At People’s Square, check your exit number before going underground because the passages are long.
  • Payment: Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your bank card, and keep a physical card as backup. Most shops and restaurants accept QR payment.
  • Photography: Ask before photographing locals. At the Marriage Market, do not put a camera in people’s faces. Step back and be discreet.
  • Comfort: Wear shoes you can walk in. This area is best covered on foot. In summer, carry water and allow extra time for the underground passages.

China Entry Requirements & Things to Prepare

  • 24/240 China Visa-Free Transit: US citizens can enjoy a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit when traveling through 24 Chinese provinces, provided they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region.
  • China Plug & Power: China plug uses Type A/C/F (220V). Bring a Type A/C adapter (US plugs sometimes work, but bring a universal adapter for safety).
  • Internet Access in China: You need a China VPN for Google/Ins/YT/X, etc. But you can also use a China eSIM with built-in access to overseas apps!
